THE movie of last year, a wildly inventive, brutal action movie that absolutely spanked anything Hollywood released last year and this is the review that we get? A paltry 9-line review which offers absolutely nothing whilst the likes of Transformers 2, The Green Hornet and Tron: Legacy not only get huge articles covering the movies but large 2 page reviews. Pathetic effort from Empire, and further evidence that they favour the coverage of comic book movies over actual plot and acting.

Not quite movie of the year, nor is it shitty. But it is quite dull. Kim Ji-Woon slips further into style over substance territory, A Tale Of Two Sisters seems so long ago now.

A decent performance from Min-sik and clever gore aside, this is a bit of a mess. The tone is uneven, it's too long, and rather unengaging. It doesn't help that Lee Byung-hun emotes about the same as a carrot. A cut above the standard hollywood serial killer trash, but far from classic, or memorable. Truly disappointing.

No doubt the gore hounds will get a stiffy from it though

It's not on par with Oldboy and seems way too close to that spectacular trilogy, but it is excellent. Absolutely excellent.

And proves my theory that Kim is the finest director out there right now.

no doubt you will rave about releases such as Hangover II over a Scorsese or Polanski release...

I loved this movie, superbly filmed and excellent acting. Although I felt the soundtrack didn't quite transpire over to the Westernised audience...

Possibly a tad long it was brutal in it's delivery...here's hoping the septic tanks don't jump onto this an do a remake

Ok, this is true. elab hates Bergman but she also likes You, the Living.

She also loves the films of Kim Ji-Won. Even if she is thoroughly appalled at a Hollywood that takes a director a class above most of their domestic ones and lumps him with Schwarzenegger for his first US film. At least I think first - Max seems to have disappeared.

Back to I Saw the Devil - wasn't completely bowled over by it on my first viewing, but I'm willing to give it a second shot at some point.

I'd certainly recommend giving it another go - I got the DVD first but wanted to get the big screen outing to as it turned up in Frightfest before the more general release. Rewatches have not diminished the impact, although it isn't my favourite of Kim's films. As for that particular piece of news, the movie news your heart fell when Empire reported it thread was perfect for it.

Well A Bittersweet Life is his greatest in my opinion.

Also, I will be pretty annoyed if the guy who made three of the most unique action-thrillers of the last decade descends into making an Arnie actioner. Not that there is anything wrong with it but he really deserves better.

I just hope that Kim Jee-Woon doesn't get neutered by the Hollywood system.

I really don't want to see him doing worthless tripe like John Woo did during his time in Hollywood. Although Face/Off is a ton of fun.

As long as the studios leave him alone, I'm pretty sure Jee-Woon can pull something interesting out of the bag.

The problem of Schwarzenegger lumbering uselessly through the film will remain, however. And the writing team isn't tremendously impressive.

err back on top rather than talking about f***ing Arnie

This movie is beautifully shot, I'd like to know if they used Red cameras because the opening sequence through the snow is sublime quality

I liked it a lot, be it slightly drawn out I highly recommend this film

Bought this last week after hearing people (on these forums for one) raving about it, and being a huge fan of Oldboy, TGTBaTU. I had high hopes, but no idea of what the film was actually about:

THE GOOD:

-As to be expected with the actors involved: terrific performances: very difficult to pick the stand-out between the two leads.

-Beautifully shot without going overboard on stylistics.

-Tough, but thought provoking storyline that is hard not to be engaged by.

-Some stunning set pieces (again, expected from the director)

THE BAD:

-Nothing particularly bad in the film, though you should leave all believability at the door before viewing.

Another excellent film from Kim, yet again showing just how much of a gap there is between Hollywood and Asia in terms of Originality.

At turns brutal, thought provoking and even funny, this is a film that's sure to stick with you long after watching. Excellent.
