Good finish. Serious kudos to Gary Barlow.

Couldn't agree more.

Well you thought it was the finish. But they've fooled us so often on that tonight

I've probably shat my last ounce of credibility but I like this song.

You have to hand it to him, Barlow is a trooper.

I know. When I first started posted on Empire if you'd have said I'd ever say "Kudos to Gary Barlow" I'd have told you to fuck off.
Funny what a difference 17 years makes.

This closing ceremony has more false endings than Return of the King!

And we thought our opening was fucking nuts.

I'm feeling similar to Laz, where was Bowie or the Who.
The Stones, and Noel would have been better than Liam.
Plus they should have used the hologram program Snoop used for Tupac in order to have Freddy play with Queen one last time.

Don't you get the feeling that any one with an ounce of credibility refused to do this gig?

Yep!

Surely a lot of people must have left because of the run on? Is transport even still running outside the DLR?

This closing ceremony has more false endings than Return of the King!

And also like ROTK the previous 3 hours had been largely disappointing.

In the build up to the games I wasn't looking forward to it. But these past two weeks have been brilliant, I'm really glad we were given the chance to host.

Ok, the closing ceremony contained a lot of crap but it shouldn't detract from an astonishing two weeks. Inspirational stuff and top-notch coverage from Auntie Beeb.
I'm just sad it's all over.

Thank you, Seb and all involved. We owe you a lot.

Yep,its been a great Tournament and everyone involved from the athletes, volunteers and the media have put on a great show.

I was skeptical at first but the London Olympics has restored my faith in British/world sport and sportsmanship.

Sums it up for me.

Going to have to disagree with the first part and its interconnectedness with the second part. The Olympics IS a competition: life is not. There is no point in being there if you're not going for gold. Of course there is no reason to be happy and proud of being silver or bronze if you did your best, but to say that the MOST important thing is taking part is rubbish. It's a competition. There is so much watering down of competitive spirit by people trying to allow equality, where competition is the very definition of inequality. As was said so aptly in The Incredibles, "when everyone is special, no one is".

Maybe they didn't take their sports so seriously back in 1908

Awww, it's all over.

Great games though - it all went smoothly, and most importantly, the sport was good.

My favourite moments:
1. 800m mens final - a beautiful bit of running, and such a good race.
2. Chad Le Clos beating Phelps.
3. Bolt getting 3 Golds again
4. Farah getting double
5. Sanchez sobbing during his medal ceremony
6. All the good looking athletes.
7. Phelps being fantastic
8. All the cycling and the rowing.
7. The men's gym contest - so tense as they kept going up the table.
8. The German discus thrower leaping over the hurdles.
9. Tomasz Majewski (Poland's shot putter) defending his title. He always looks a bit like a former hippy.
10. The men's pole vault and high jump finals - both were great.

And finally - Michael Johnson and Ian Thorpe. I know Johnson already does a lot for the BBC whenever they have an athletics competiton on, but they mustn't lose him. And Ian Thorpe has to return for the next one.

I think that was probably my favourite moment as well, but soooo many to choose from, not just all the GB performances (I think I shed a swimmming poool of tears every time I saw Nicola Adams smile) but every competitor from every country, every winner, every record broken was just pure magic.
