Short Eyes (Young, 1977) Short Eyes is one of a couple of films I've only found thanks to Rawlinson's long list of 2000 a couple of years ago. Like Stalag 17, Short Eyes is a prison story written by someone who'd experienced it. In this case Manuel Pinero actually wrote the play while still inside as part of a workshop. Covering a couple of days inside it tries to present the various parts of life inside – the characters and the hierarchies, the split racial groups, decent or corrupt officers, sexual issues and, very occasionally, humour. Split though the groups are, however, they all come together as a council and all share opinions on two things – the way to deal with a paedophile (the Short Eyes of the title apparently) and the desire for an attractive young latino who comes increasingly under threat from various quarters. As a film, it really it doesn't even attempt to move beyond its theatrical staging – not simply the limited location, but the way in which people come forward for their moment in the sun and even the occasional musical interlude (at least one of which didn't look entirely different from the canteen jam in Fame!). But even with the stagey key speeches, there's some excellent writing here and some wonderful performances. Of particular note are Bruce Davison as Davis, a new inmate accused of raping a little girl and respected inmate Juan (Jose Perez), who tries to treat Davis decently but suffers for it as the accused chooses to use him as a confidant. And when the inevitable occurs, the audience are invited to empathise with Juan as, like him, we know the truth. Some films from this period feel quite dated now. But with Short Eyes I'd bet anything that the writers of Oz are massive fans of the film – the rhythm of the language and the interactions between groups, the shifts in mood and the internal politics, all feel very familiar. And many of the scenarios and attitudes (and even location) look frighteningly unchanged decades later. One of the best prison films out there.
