After the success (or failure, depending on your viewpoint and your desire to see Chocolat top the lists, naming no names, Devi' ) of the 2000 thread, we're now going to do a joint 1977 list. Any particular reason for 1977?

Nope - I thought of a decade, Rawlinson thought of a year. Or possibly the other way round. Actually, that was the other way round. I think.

At one point we thought of opening it up to suggestions in the 2000 thread but then we thought 'nah'. We've already 'randomly' chosen a 3rd year too

What embarrassing 1977 films will elab include and then angrily defend? What weird-ass films will rawlinson include in the hopes that he will look cool, only for it to backfire and make him look like a deranged pervert? Will Deviation latch onto rawlinson's favourite film and start praising it to anyone who'll listen?

All these questions and more, to be answered soon.

Sorry Hughes, I'm not a Romero fan.

I am a little worried some might be missing though. As Rgirvan mentioned in the 2000 list thread, IMDB have screwed up their browse somewhere so when you pull out, say, 1977 films you get some that aren't which also implies you miss some that are. It wasn't a problem with the 2000 as I first pulled the long longlist before IMDB started screwing about, but it might affect this and future lists so I've tried lots of different sources for completeness (even the startinglist thing from TSPDT, although the dates for some of their stuff are regularly off as well!).

There are also a couple of disputed dates in this list - ones that either I or Rawlinson know to be wrong on IMDB and we've gone with what we know. That's only one of mine, but I think a couple of his.

In general, I've noticed in my list a much lower number of writer/directors back in the 70s - there are a few, but, without checking, I don't think it's nearly as many. There are also a couple of directors who appear on both my 2000 and 1977 lists. Unsurprisingly, they tend to be writer/directors.

Oddly enough it looks more extensive than the main list of films by year page on Wiki

You will be pleased at one film making it in Hughes, although maybe not by placing - but it did much better when I rewatched it than I expected.

Also, there were a couple of films I couldn't find to watch/rewatch and I'm not willing to go on a very old memory - Hot Tomorrows and Handle With Care. And while I have now bought a very cheap copy of The Great Smokey Roadblock, I doubt it'd make the list anyway!.

Yeah, the site is all over the place at times. I'm still trying to decide about one film that will be quite high up my list if I put it in 77. Lots of sites list it as 77, imdb doesn't, so I'm trying to decide what to do.

It's a dad film. It's the kind film dads watch before listening to Status Quo.

I enjoy A Bridge Too Far. It didn't make my list though.

But I've just had a panic reshuffle because one of the ones on the different version of the list Hughes linked to wasn't on my list.

I thought we could add the last list as a link in the top thread too. If we do a few of those it'll keep an ongoing record

Spinnolio (Weldon, 1977)

I couldn't help but include this short another one from NFB Canada. It's Weldon's very cynical take on the tale of Pinocchio. It follows through his life trajectory when the blue fairy fails to turn him into a real boy, yet his brain cracked creator determines that, in fact, he is. This starts with sending him to school then, after graduation, on to the world of work. Unsurprisingly he turns out to be a good listener and this quality along with other skills such as obedience (for which he earned an 'A' in his school report along with patriotism! not so great at Phys Ed though) make him a key human resources attribute but leads to the inevitable replacement by a computer.

The cartoon has already long departed the Disney roots I'd frankly include it solely for the moment when Jiminy Cricket turns up! but this unsentimental and cruel tale tends more to a rather subtle critique on the life of a corporate minion and the mindless qualities required to succeed in modern life (think the likes of Office Space). And that he seems to find contentment as a bum sounds very 30s French to me. It's a wonder what the world of shorts would do without the NFB.
