For the first time ever I am going to attempt to give up something for Lent.  I have decided on chocolate and crisps but it will be difficult.  Particularly crisps, tending to have 1 bag a day.  Will be interesting to see if I can do it but the more people I tell the more likely I am to give it a damn good try

What about you?

I'm trying to give up two bad habits this year: Eating past 6 o'clock, and drinking on a school night (both of which I do with a depressing regularity). Will not be easy because I'm a greedy bastard, but hopefully afterwards I will be healthier and (more importantly) slimmer.

Instead of just giving something up, why not replace that with something good? Give up chocolate: help solve world hunger. Give up smoking: help cure cancer. That sort of thing.

Or maybe something a little smaller. Up to you.

And as I've mentioned elsewhere, Lenten observances aren't kept on Sundays. (46 days until Easter, 6 Sundays. Do the math.) So if you're giving up chocolate, then Sundays are when you can crack open the Galaxy Bar.

I think I'm going to go for the whole 46 days as if I start on the Sunday I may not stop, all or nothing!

I've giving up booze, but will be taking full advantage of the Vatican reprieve for St Paddy's Day.

Damn right. Do something to help instead of giving something up. Go volunteer somewhere or start a group to clean up the local park/canal/brothel. Imagine the man hours if everybody giving up beer and chocolate spent just one afternoon helping people instead.

I thought I'd try to do something positive, instead of giving something up (I tried giving up being awesome, but it was too difficult). So I'm getting to work on time. I know that technically I should be doing that anyway, but it's not always possible when I'm burning DVDs or something in the morning. Or downloading podcasts. Or watching last night's goals on YouTube.

I'm going to try and cut down on eating junk food. Also going off alcohol for the next six weeks. I've also started hitting the gym with a friend to get some exercise and lose weight.

If you haven't already done so, speak to a personal trainer so you can get a workout programme written out for you. A structure and a set of clear goals are important. Once they're sorted, stick to them.

The thing is, if those people in question are in fact your fellow forumites then there's an element of 'plausible deniability'. You could still a eat a bag a day and we wouldn't have any way of knowing either way!

As for me, I'll try giving up lent for lent. See how it goes.

True, but I've told friends and family as well. The more people I tell the more people I will feel I am lying to if snuck a bag in now and again. On day 3 so far Knowing that Sundays don't count is a bonus but going to work through them as I have a feeling if I start on Sunday I may not stop!!

I'm giving up McDonalds, doesn't sound much but the money grabbing bastards have a branch right round the corner from my house and another round the corner from work, throw in that I'm a lazy git and it's all too easy to go there for lunch/snacks/after-booze noms.
