I vowed that I would not start this list until I had finished writing it. I lied. But anyway, I figured I needed to start it some time. So here is the announcement of my Top 52 list (I'm averse to round numbers), which will feature my 52 favourite films but by no means whatsoever the best 52 films I've seen. Just my favourites. Hope you enjoy it.

What to expect:

  • Lots of Animation
  • At least 2 Terrence Malick films to feature at some point
  • Several films which you probably don't like but others do
  • Slow progress with updates.

What not expect:

  • To agree with every entry
  • Scorcese, Tarantino, P+P, Godard and several other directors that people like.
  • Particularly incisive or deep writing
  • The list to make much coherent sense with my other opinions and votes on the board.
  • To be surprised

That'd be Princess and the Frog then

I notice you didn't hurrah the lack of P+P. Although I've only seen one of their films.

But your opinions never make coherent sense.

Looking forward to the list, even if it will have Gladiator.

Swords, why not make it top 55? It will then be exactly twice as long as your unfinished list from 3 and a half years back.

And if LOTR isn't in the top 10, I'm never making you another avatar!

Your memory is bloody good. That list was when I had just started on the forums and probably featured about 3 of the films that have made this list.

If I read enough Thomas Hardy I'm allowing myself to post the first entry tonight. However, I doubt I will as my reading discipline at the moment is terrible.

Oh you were one of the people who liked Aguirre! (judging from the title picture) Doesn't make up for P&P hate but it's a step in the right direction. I had you pegged as a total failure.

Encouraging things to read. I dunno, Gladiator aside I think that the films in my picture are quite well loved round here.

Also, I've only seen the one P+P film, Black Narcissus. I might enjoy some of their other stuff.

His other stuff are definitely not like Black Narcissus. In fact, it is scientific fact that if you don't like The Life and Death of General Blimp, then you are pretty much a potential rapist (or a footballer).

My first choice may well be one of the most predictable. Since it's release in the UK last year I've seen this film 5 times and haven't once tired of it. Such is the love I have for this film I know the words to almost all the songs, I can quote large sections of it and occasionally I have dreams of marrying Tiana. Ok, that last bit wasn't true. Honest.

The appeal of this film, for me, lies in my love of hand drawn animation in general. As a fan of 90s era Disney, I resented the abandonment of their old style in favour of soulless CG. So when it was announced that the studio was returning to what made them great, I was suitably excited. And the final result bettered my expectations. It's feels like a Disney film, with the inevitable happy ending and comic animal sidekicks, yet is elevated above a standard formula film by an engaging female lead and a wonderful New Orleans soundtrack.

Tiana is not your average princess. In fact, she isn't a princess at all, she's a hardworking waitress who dreams of opening a restaurant. Crucially to our engagement with the character, she is full of vim and vigour and is a long way from the bland heroines of old. Prince Naveen, meanwhile, is a hilariously clueless charmer who makes for an appealing partner to the more serious protagonist. The supporting cast are equally brilliant, but special mention must go to Dr. Facilier who is undeniably creepy and has the best villain song since Be Prepared, and to Charlotte, Tiana's daft best friend who provides some big laughs.

I also mentioned the soundtrack, and that's because it's amazing. Shut up, all you naysayers. Yes, there were one or two more forgettable tracks, but what the music does so well is contribute to an overall atmosphere that is so full of life it's immensely difficult not to get carried away. Trumpets blast, flamingoes (in the bayou? Wtf?) sing and double basses do whatever double basses do. So at times it just doesn't feel Disney because it's so darned upbeat. It's a film filled with joy and fun, and for that reason it makes an excellent start to my list. Enjoy it while it lasts, it doesn't stay this happy for long, trust me.

"It's feels"? Much better banner, BTW (but the review's font is ugly). I haven't seen the film, so can't comment.

Which came one after the other, and made the thing a bit of a slog in the middle. It's mostly fun though.

Hah, the drop-down box has nothing to do with the actual choice of fonts, it just has the most common ones. Choose anything from your computer that looks good and try it out.

I would comment on the content, but for now I'm just giving swords friendly (though abrasive) advice on how to make the presentation better, and I haven't seen the film.

Probably best. It's a very poor Disney.

Have you seen Tangled yet Swords? I see that's getting some pretty lousy reviews.
