Seriously though; all the vocals sound like Julian Casablancas' solo album - distorted drawl - all the beats and hooks are just rehashes of themselves (and of generic RnB songs - I'm On A Boat, Just Had Sex and The Creep are basically indistinguishable from each other) and the lyrics are hardly clever, aiming for lowbrow humour; while this isn't always bad (coming from me lulz) it doesn't aspire to be anything more than just sex jokes. Half the intelligence of the Conchords would be much appreciated.

Stop comparing them to FOTC they're two completely different things!
Lonely Islands songs don't sound the same, ridiculous. Not more so than any other band.
These guys just keep getting better and better.

Well, they're not two different things. They're both comedy bands.

And the other band thing as well is wrong; the Conchords delve into electronica, hip hop, folk, ballads, RnB, rock... Lonely Island consists of the same beat and structure to their songs every time.

Lonely Island are NOT trying to delve into folk, ballads, rock etc. They have their own signature and style and try to inject actual humour into their music instead of novelty gimmicks.
Same way that Arcade Fire don't do hip hop and Kanye West doesn't do heavy metal.
The Conchords do that because that's their thing. Without the fact that they are a couple of socially awkward New Zealanders who attempt every genre of music in their songs, they simply wouldn't be very amusing.
I love the show, but in terms of their songs there is a lot of filler to pad out the episodes.

Arcade Fire is a moot point though, because they manage to make songs that differentiate from each other and progress through genres; Kanye West has also shown progress through his album.

If that is the Conchords thing - which to me is a very good thing, the successful parodying of a number of genres which showcases their lyrical and compositional strength (and I don't think that its because they attempt every song that they're amusing, that seems a bit niche - , is the Lonely Island's thing a number of poorly written songs that sound exactly the same? Sticking to a genre is one thing, being poor in the genre is another.

I can't really get past the fact the best things about "I Just Had Sex" and "Creep" were John McEnro and Waters respectively.  As tunes they didn't really hit me.

"Boombox" and "Cool Guys" are both thoroughly amusing, but I have to say I prefer the Conchords (although I've only just got in to them via YouTube.  Yes I'm phenomally late and uncool.  Sorry.)

Now, I'm going to evac this thread as it seems to be on a downward spiral...

Well you seem to have certainly changed your tune (pun not intended). You were a fan of Lonely Island in the last page and now you're their biggest critic and hate them.

Why can't people just take them for what they are i.e. fun music.

Well this was my first post:

quote:

ORIGINAL: Epiphany Demon

Thought it was okay, but there's no wit or genuine charm in their songs. Someone like FOTC has comedy songs down to a tee, genre wise, musically and lyrically. Lonely Island, as acceptable as they are, just seem like they're trying a bit too hard.

Also, the criticisms against Scott Pilgrim; would you have the same for LOTR?

Not really a fan, but then I listened to the song again; then I listened to The Creep, and then I'm On A Boat, and then I said this:

quote:

ORIGINAL: Epiphany Demon

Actually, I hate it. All this lobbying for it has made me despise it, much in the same way I hate Cheryl Cole, Slumdog Millionaire and Wispas.

Bit tongue in cheek, but my most recent comments sum up my feelings on them.

Because we are all different and not everyone has the same comedic tastes as you?

You really are taking this personally, Vad3r, nobody is saying anything against you for liking them. You like them, fine, who gives a shit if other people don't?

this thread is funnier than the song. (Boombox is a tune though.)

It seems like I'm the only one on here who is a fan of the band and not just individual songs!

How can you be a fan of the band if they don't have good individual songs to make up a collection of good songs? This is probably why I am not a fan of the band.

FOTC were a band long before the show, their music stands on its own. The show (at least season 1) was largely written around the songs hence I dont get how the songs are actually the filler. Are you aware how many albums FOTC have sold or how many awards (inc Grammy) they've won?

I had never heard of this band until I read through this thread just now. Having now heard a selection of their 'work', I delare them to be the musical equivalent of Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg.

I really like The Lonely Island, I have the first album and its a lot of fun. 'Boombox' is a great song and I find them (Andy Samberg in particular) very funny guys.

That being said, I'm backing away from this thread...

Funniest thing I've read for weeks.

I'm with Epi D on this one. I've heard one of their songs (the one originally posted and I thought it was shit) but the crazy fanboy wanking over them by va3er is making me hate them.

Time to revive the lads.

Is THIS the best live performance ever?? Either way, I really wish they'd perform live more often.

Check out their music videos and digital shorts (Threw It On The Ground, Like A Boss, Dear Sister, People Getting Punched and many more) on YouTube.

Here's one they made exclusive for an awards show ''Cool Guys Don't Look At Explosions'' > Clicky

This generations The Queen Is Dead and OK Computer:

I'm not a hater, but after investigating I am left severely underwhelmed, but mainly in relation to the ridiculously messianic hyperbole with which you have drenched your own thread like a teenage boy's first frenzied and aimless ejaculation.
