 Does anyone here cycle? Either for fun or to commute, or both?

I've been cycling to college/uni/work for about 10 years now, and riding off in the woods for about 8.
I have a GT Aggressor at the moment, got it just over a year ago when my old Avalanche died.

I rode the 75 Mile London To Brighton last November, which was amazing, took a while!
Did the South Downs Way last May too, that was a riot in a group of 10!
I'd definately do the two again.

I'm about to sign up for the Hell Rider with a few chums, which combines 5k runs and 10k rides.

So what do you do?

 Oooh good, another favourite exercise past time




I started to cycle more seriously last year spending a stupid amount of money on gear and proper shoes. Got a Specialized Hardrock MB. Also swapped my mountain bike tyres out for hybrid tyres as I was starting to commute to work in the summer. Loved cycling to work 16 miles each way but as it is along the canal I don't do it whilst it is dark when I come out of work. Can't wait to start again. Got a snazzy Garmin computer for the bike as well with Heart Rate Monitor

Did the London Bikeathon last year on the hottest day of the year (56 miles) and will do that again this year. Also did a 50 mile bike ride in the New Forest in September and the Palace to Palace (Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle) the week after the New Forest ride . Tempted by the Nightrider but not sure how it would muck up my sleeping . Would also like to do London to Oxford.

I find cycling very relaxing (when along the canal). When the weather gets better I'm hoping to cycle to Black Park, do my 5k Parkrun and then cycle home

 I love cycling - used my bikes in the past for commuting and until winter comes around you dont realise just how much they help to keep you fit. Most Ive done is about 55 miles on one ride non-stop, but that was on a heavy and pretty shit mountain bike.

About three weeks ago my Giant CRS SE Hybrid bike was stolen from outside my workplace (lesson - insurance and D-locks are a must). Replaced it last week with a Specialised Sirrus Sport 2010. Great urban bike but the more upright riding position it offers might not be as good for longer journeys. Slick 28" wheels keep it quick, and the carbon forks help absorb bumps better than my Giant. Faster acceleration due to the light weight but I think it might be slower on long downhill straights because its aerodynamics are suited more to city cycling. That said it is a great commuter bike in a city - very manoeuvrable and easy to control and get comfortable on. Good for a first £200 + bike. I picked it up for 180 second-hand but spent almost £100 replacing cassettes, chains, adding mudguards and lights. Can't wait to try it over a decent distance.

 My cousins husband cycled for Scotland in the Commonwealth games a good decade ago or more. He also just cycled from his home in Berlin to Scotland all in the name of charideeeee. I've also met Graeme Obree a few times, who he was good mates with, coming from the same neck of the woods. He's a bit crackers but a nice bloke.

Thats as close as i've come to cycling

Yeah, I mainly MB - mainly round where I live, I try and zip round Rutland Water once a week but truthfully I haven't been out on my bike since September last year.
In the summer a group of us hit Cannock Chase (about an hours; drive) to Follow The Dog, a great little 7 mile course designed and looked after by keen mountain bikers.
We also take a yearly trip to places such as Hathersage and Marple for a weekender. We all end up hurt at some point, I broke 2 ribs last year trying something above my station

I take my bike to Barbados when we go on holiday, this photo is taken on the West Coast of the island, about a 12 mile ride from my in-laws house. I like to get up early and thrash out there before the sun comes up, then sit on the cliff with a big fat reefer before heading back for a hearty breakfast

 Just got back from 45 mins of Elite Spin and then Ab Attack, i'm a machine with amazing rock hard abs!.......underneath 1" of flab of course!

My new job is about 9 miles from home, which i'm planning to cycle to. The issue is that there are no showers/changing rooms at the new place, so probably wont be riding in the rain...

I've been signed up to be in a team of 3 for THIS Bananaman Triathlon in July, so something more intense to train for!


I know i've started Running and Cycling threads, i wont be starting a swimming one....maybe just a triathlon one!

 Good stuff, well done.

I went for another ELITE spin class this evening. Bastard trainer took our saddles away. 45 mins of sprinting stood up! At least i wont have a sore ass....

 When my girlfriend said she was going to combat i thought she was training to be a ninja or something.

In other news, i've just signed our team of 5 up for the Hellrider LINK.

So now i have a duathalon in June and triathalon in July. Better keep this exercise schedule up until then...

 Ouch GD!!

My brother has been getting back into cycling recently (think he couldn't stand the thought of me doing more cycling than him specially as he used to be into it in a serious way back in his teens in BMXing.  That and he's going through a mid life crisis  )

He's found some new BFF in the village where he lives and goes out at the weekend and some evenings for trail riding round the Chilterns.  He recently spent over £100 on a front light that I'm sure you can see from space

He's also been salivating over the following



He's got a Pace cycle at the moment but reckons single speed is the new black

 Bike is fixed and i'm £75 lighter...

Although my fork doesnt work now, so i'm riding a heavy rigid bike! Went out to Farnham today and rode for about 15miles, i'm shattered now, first off-road ride in a while!

 Cycled to work this morning on my knackered bike. I can only get one gear but it'll do until I get paid and can by a new one.

Thoughts or recommendations? Probably around about that budget for the moment as it won't be getting any serious use.

Does your work do the cycletowork scheme? You can get around 40% off a new bike.

That bike looks fine if you're not going to use it often and hard. Cheaper bikes tend to wear out quicker, and you'll be spending out often on replacement parts. That's only if you want to keep it in tip-top form, which would may not if you're not into cycling really anyway.

It'd be a good starter bike, you never know, you might really get into it and want to upgrade in a years time anyway!
My £700ish mountain bikes i've used for cycling to work everyday usually last about 3-4 years, with a few replacements and services each year.

 I just took a peek at the carrera you posted, i'd have a look at it first, go for a ride around the block. It says it's 26" but that's massive, i think a large bike is 24". Normally the wheels are 26", so like i say, go and have a look first.

If the size is right i'd go for it, then probably take it to a shop if you're not sure how to service it and get the once over.

 One of those will be me then jonson

When I cycle to work I cycle in along the canal and there is no way I'm doing that in the dark........  Now it's lighter in the evenings I can think about cycling in again.  Won't be doing it every day but even a couple of times a week will be nicer than getting the Tube every day

 I think the price of fuel will get a lot of people peddling to work as well.

Unless you're Jonson (richer than 4 Scrooge McDucks!), he'll just burn another baby seal in the Bentley.

That was my issue as well

It was bad enough doing a 54 miler in the New Forest last year, travelling and hour and a quarter.   I like the local ones    Does look good though!
