Alrighty,

Very much in the same vein as the thread Elephant Boy has ran in recent years (all being with a slightly different name and one or two evolving steps) and given that the good man hasn't been on the boards for over a month - I thought I'd make sure this thread gets set up (I hope I'm not overstepping my boundaries....).

THE RULES

Pretty simple stuff really.

For every new film you see that is officially released in 2011 (according to where you live), the idea is to build an ongoing list of the things you end up seeing and rank your order of preference until the conclusion of the year. For every new film watched, simply post the film's title, where it roughly enters your list and a review regarding your thoughts about the corresponding film - which can be anything from a sentence, an essay, a mark out of 10 or all three in some way; it's entirely up to you.

In order to avoid a number of repeated posts, either post your reviews and lists in the same edited post throughout the year or wait until you've seen around five new things before adding things to your list – something which I've been doing the past couple of years. Feel free to use as little or as many posts as you like - whatever works best for you.

If you want to keep your ongoing list restricted to a top 10 / top 20 / top 50 or as I tend to do things, have it in its entirety as it grows throughout the year, again, that is your call.

The purpose of the thread is to get and help give a good comprehension of the films released in 2011 and to have the opportunity to praise / vilify certain commercial / independent releases that have left an impression on us as they happen.

I still have a handful of things from 2010 before I move onto 2011, but the likely first new entries will arrive in the corking trio of The Kings Speech, 127 Hours & Black Swan.

Happy New Year everyone and I look forward to seeing everyone's ongoing lists of  favourites / pet hates from 2011.

Bustard yes you are stepping on my toes! You should know by now than even with me being away for awhile than I would still be back to start of my Top Ten of 2011 thread, anyway this is going to take getting over for me to forgive you

In any event you have beaten me to it, and so I will graciously contribute this thread in the coming year, just to show that there are no hard feelings

But also to get you back I will post my first film of the year on New Years Day, its a film I saw in the states a few weeks back, but is not released here until next week, so I think I can get away with it

That's just typical that is, and I very nearly didn't start up the thread....

Regardless, good to have you back...

127 Hours (Danny Boyle, 94 Mins) 7.5/10
After the slight mistep which was Slumdog Millionaire Danny Boyle is back with one of his most powerful, and viserally arresting films. James Franco gives a chilling performance as a happy go-lucky young man taken to the brink, by a ramdon act of traigdy. The psychology of the central character's state of mind is perfectly painted, there is even an aspect of black comedy in the scene where Aron images himself hosting his own chat show down in the cave, to pull something like this off in such a grim, and full on film, is really something. My only slight complaint is, that it seems like just about everything from there real event has been thrown at the screen, to make it sometimes look more like an docunmentary, also because you know whats going to happen to Ralston, and it is drawn out, there is a little bit of anti-clamax about it.

Coming up next I should be viewing The Next Three Days and The King's Speech.

Ah, Gimli! Long time indeed!

Just checked and it has actually been over well 3 years since I last posted... Damn, time well and truly flies!

Should be seeing 127 Hours next week as my first 2011 flim. If it's anything as good as The Road was last year I'll me mighty pleased.

Will be interesting to see what you make of the Next Three Days Elephant Boy. I saw the French original a couple of years back (Anything For Her) and I really liked it, so naturally I'm a bit suspicious of the Russell Crowe remake.

Looking forward to 127 Hours. Wasn't bowled over by Slumdog but I've got a lot of time for Danny Boyle so I have reasonably high expectations.

Still a good week or two away from adding my first entries for 2011 but I suspect they'll include this, the Kings Speech, the Green Hornet, Blue Valentine, Peter Mullan's Neds & the much eagerly awaited Black Swan.

Did not reliase Next Three Days was a remake of Anything For Her, which I too really enjoyed, but since I have seen the French film I will give this remake a go, it is a bit on the long side looking at the running time

The King's Speech was something of a revelation.  The trailer looked a bit staid but all of the performances (with the exception of Tim Spall's rather misjudged portrayal of Churchill who is admittedly a tough person to pull off) are superb and the script is pretty funny.  Where it really works is in working in elements of suspense so that you really root for Colin Firth's Bertie.  I was also impressed with Tom Hooper's direction with his use of unusual camera angles and close ups and what appeared to be slightly undersized props to portray Bertie's unease.  At the screening I saw in Leicester Square there was a spontaneous round of applause at the end of the film so it clearly went down well.

Reserving a spot here. Still have a lot to catch up with on my 2010 list ( I may run that concurrently in this thread, if that won't upset you too much Qwerty! ), but am chomping at the bit to get started on 2011!

127 DAYS
Danny Boyle obviously loves challenges, and with 127 Days he set out to make perhaps his most difficult film yet, consisting, for the most part, of a man stuck in a cave, in many ways the total opposite of Slumdog Millionaire [and that was a pretty big risk initially too].  For the most part he succeeds-no, this isn't really a crowd pleaser like Slumdog [though you do want to cheer at the end], it's actually quite an uncomfortable film to watch, but totally gripping despite it's restrictive setting.  Of course Boyle being Boyle, he steadfastly refuses to make the story dull, keeps his camera moving [there's one fantastic pull back from our trapped hero, out of the cave and ending high above the mountains, simply but brilliantly showing his isolation] and throws in lots of flashbacks and hallucinations, some of which maybe get a bit much, but tell us just enough about Aron and keeps things interesting until the climactic arm lopping, which might be the most cringe-inducing scene of it's type ever done. James Franco really shows his acting chops here and A.R.Rahman's pounding minimalistic [and very loudly mixed!] score helps make the film very exciting even though it perhaps shouldn't be. Boyle at times overdoes things, as he often does, such as for instance some split screen at the end, but for the most part he's made another cracking film here, showing again why he's one of our greatest filmmakers today, someone able to traverse genres and subjects with astounding ease, yet still make each film recognisably his.

SEASON OF THE WITCH
A bizarre mixture of good and bad, this does manage to be a reasonable medieval fantasy adventure with elements of horror, especially considering the two year delay and the reshoots, but for every good thing there's a really bad thing and everything jars.  It's mostly done very serious and po-faced, but there's the odd really goofy thing such as Ron Perlman's 780s action movie quips and a demon who sounds like a cross between Jar Jar Binks and Rupert Everett.  Action is mostly the usual eye-hurting blur you get these days, but there's an incredibly suspenseful rope bridge sequence. Some of the CG is horrendous, including the worst cloud effects I've ever seen, but there's a great looking demon near the end and a very convincing depiction of the Middle Ages, all mud and grime in Terry Gilliam fashion.  At times the film seems to be examining religious intolerance and hypocrisy, and raises the interesting notion that maybe the Crusades weren't fuelled by good intent at all, but things like demonic wolves and zombie ninja monks [honestly!] keep getting in the way, while the dialogue is wierd-people mostly speak in a kind of old-fashioned way, or the way people think medieval folk spoke, but every now and again a modern word or saying is thrown in.  Still, Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman are a great team and there are enough good things to suggest that the original cut may have been very good indeed.  Maybe one day we'll see it, this version is a bit of a mess, but not an an unenjoyable one.
5.5/10

I completely agree with your 127 Hours reveiw Dr, some very good points well made! I think it might be up there with Boyle's best work, and certainly very different to Slumdog

Think I might give Season of the Witch a miss, unless it pops up at my local art house, in couple of months time. Cage is really cuning them out at the moment
