With New Year being the biggest waste of time know to humankind, it allows me to get this year's list started early.

Features

1. Blades Of Glory (2nd view, 2007, Josh Gordon/Will Speck) - 3/5

Will Ferrell might just be the most annoying man on the planet, but he's not quite as bad as usual in this film. Incredibly juvenile and half of the jokes simply don't work, but when it's on form there are laughs to be had.

Shorts

1. Under The Hood (2009, Eric Matthies)

A nice companion piece to Watchmen, this fictional documentary discusses the Minutemen (always the most fascinating aspect of Watchmen for me) in greater depth, as well as Hollis Mason's autobiography. The adverts and historical footage are excellent.

1. The maltese falcon (John Huston)

This was the first film noir I watched, the film that introduced me to Bogart, and one of the first classic hollywood films I had watched, and I absolutely loved it. So 4 years later to start the year off it finally got a long overdue rewatch.

Over those few years I had forgot quite how confusing the plot is, and how difficult it is to follow Bogart's explanation of the events, and all of the inevitable twists. That said, while this isnt the film I remembered, it is still an enjoyable watch, and the supporting cast all do a very good job (especially Lorre, who is always a stand out). There is also still something magical about the moment the statue gets revealed from the paper wrapping, and its easy to see why Bogart was so happy replaying this character type for years to come. 8/10

2. A Serbian film

It isnt often I would say this, but im glad this was the cut version. The film is of course very graphic, but the thought of seeing the cut scenes is quite sickening when you consider how well done everything else on show is. The messages within the film however are not very well done, and the film is just a muddled mess that does just become graphic for the sake of being so. 1/10

3. Santa Claus conquers the Martians

He's being generous about Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, too.

Good ol' Ghibli. You can always rely on their films to suck.

The Runaways.

How is it possible to take an exciting rock band, great music, drugs and lesbianism and make a film this boring?  Oh yeah, cast Stewart and Fanning as Jett and Currie. It felt more like watching a couple of teenagers playing at Rock Band than watching the legendary girl rockers. It all feels so cartoonish that the darker aspects of the story never become convincing. The sole saving grace is Michael Shannon, he gives the film a rocket up the arse whenever he's on screen, especially when coaching Fanning through Cherry Bomb, but other than that it's pretty worthless.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Steven Spielberg)

I'm still not quite sure why this is as reviled in some quarters as it is. Sure, there's one too many goofy moments (although it's only the monkey swinging that really grates on me), Karen Allen is just plain bad with the family stuff dragging the pace down in places and Ray Winston is wasted; but on the whole it fits pretty smoothly into the rest of the saga. Ford fits back into Jones like a worn glove that's still very comfortable and Blanchett is a terrific villian, and the first 40 minutes in particular has some superb action sequences. In fact, the big flaw is that it runs out of steam in the last 30 minutes - the climax to an Indiana Jones film should not be a lot of walking to watch the villian undo themselves. Fun, but it shouldn't have ended on the wedding and I'd rather it ended here than continue on with Laboeuf taking on the torch. (3.5)

I actually enjoyed it, but I think that was down to the fact that I knew nothing about the band.

Yeah, but those two can't act no matter who they're playing.  That said, it was a little like casting Joe McElderry to play G.G. Allin.

1. Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese, 2010)
This is better than I remembered it being (and I liked it the first time around).

2. Hot Rod (Avika Schaffer, 2007)
Funnier than I thought it would be, considering its lead.

I could not disagree more, I think it is a very timley tale about the curuption of the music biz on teenagers, and shows how things have come full cicrle, with the Michael Shannon character acting as the seventies version of Simon Cowell. As for the leads, Stewart is just playing the same part as in all her films, but I thought Fanning gave a very touching performance, and really got the numbness, and nervious enengy of Currie. It was a powerful, colorful, rollercoaster which might just go down as a cult gem in the mold of Velvet Goldmine.

Anyway my first film of the new year

Bee Movie (Steve Hickner, Simon J Smith, 2007, 80 Mins) 6.5/10
A solid annimention, it gets off to a slow start, and there are some cheesy lines, but Jerry Seinfeld makes a very funny and likeable lead, and there are some fine digs at celeberties, and bright visionals.

Unlikely, Goldmine was made by a director with talent.

1. Kick Ass (2nd view, 2010, Matthew Vaughn) - 4/5
2. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2nd view, 2010, Edgar Wright) - 4/5

In terms of how much I like these, there's really very little difference between the two, and I can imagine that both films will still appear next to one another a lot further into the year. Both good fun, but the credits for Pilgrim might be the best bit from either.

Isn't that Raiders of the Lost Ark?

I agree, I watched it again on DVD a couple of days ago and enjoyed it immensely. Definitely one of the best summer blockbusters of the past couple of years.  How the feck Transformers has a higher IMDb rating God only knows.  It's great to have an action film with exciting, inventive and coherent action scenes that isn't just a lot of shaky cam, as well as music that is memorable and heroic and not just generic, forgettable crud.

Most of the hate for this movie seems to be thrown towards Indy hiding in a fridge - 30 seconds in a two hour film? - and the CG animals -20 seconds in a two hour film?.  Some people take movies far too seriously.

Not a five star film, but a four star film just like Temple of Doom and Last Crusade.

001) Bee Movie  (Steve Hickner & Simon J. Smith, USA, 2007, Broadcast) - 6.0

Fairly likeable, but not fantastic, and some of the voice acting didn't work for me - namely Seinfeld, Rock and Goodman. Mainly because they sounded exactly like Seinfeld, Rock and Goodman and not much like cartoon characters.

01. The Manchurian Candidate (1962, Frankenheimer, USA) - 4/5
Frankenheimer's Cold War thriller opens on a sequence that might as well be some Z-grade Animal House/Apocalypse Now mash-up - the boozing, happy-go-lucky soldiers have their party crashed by DeanStaff Sergeant Raymond Shaw, so grim it's almost cartoonish. Shortly after, this unit gets captured, brainwashed by a group of Communists, and sent back home, All-American sleepers in a tense and unforgiving political climate. While it takes forever to get to this point, with the opening twenty minutes being terminally dull in their abundance of exposition and occasionally laughable staging (the kidnapping itself is hilarious), the film eventually evolves into a thrilling exploration of what really constitutes a threat to a country's security - the blustering and irrational or the ideologically inconsistent. The film's pulp novel roots means that this lends itself to goofiness and exaggeration (Shaw's villainous mother wouldn't be out of place in Captain Planet, chillingly played as she is by Lansbury), but Frankenheimer tempers that with the utter certainty of his direction - such scenes are either played for black comedy, such as Iselin's query about how many Communists he actually knows are in the Department of Defence, or deadly serious, as the bar sequence is. With committed performances from Sinatra and Harvey and the dark humour deployed throughout, The Manchurian Candidate is caught halfway between hallucinatory and reality, but that's exactly what it's going for, and it thrills and chills more than if it had stuck with one or the other.

02. Capricorn One (1977, Hyams, USA/UK) - 2.5/5
Conspiracy theorists love being pandered to, and Hyams' exploration of the 'faked Moon landing' scenario would probably get said theorists all excited because of how much it panders to them - on the face of it, that is. Hyams' film explores an alternate scenario where a faked Mars landing goes wrong, with the shuttle burning up on re-entry and the astronauts faking the mission forced to run for their lives and expose the truth, and the narrative interrogates the political motivations for this and the ease with which cover-ups could occur in the everyday. However, this superficial message of "truth is what the seller makes it" betrays the film's straight-faced mockery of such conspiracy theories. The conspiracy itself is comically overdone, the three leads canvas your typical Hollywood leading man and his usual posse of comic relief/ethnic minority in a quite knowing fashion, and the film even directly references the ubiquity of lies and fakery in the modern age, Kay Brubacker's elongated speech about a film crew she and her family saw an abandoned mining town - "you could get anyone to believe anything" - more directed at those who spin wild theories than at the theories themselves. The final shot itself even harks back to the faked Mars landing, its use of slow motion taking the slow motion in the landing video and turning it back on the audience, as if using the language of the theorists to point to their own lack of veracity. This interesting approach to conspiracy theories is unfortunately counteracted by major narrative issues, however - the comic relief is incredibly annoying and, more importantly, the entire subplot involving Elliot Gould's investigative journalist feels tacked on and half-baked. While it plunders conspiracy theory tropes for the same purpose as those in the other story, it largely adds very little, is pretty dull and is driven by Gould's disinterested performance.

Capricorn One at least has a great score. The main theme is one of Goldsmith's best pieces.

1) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, too.

2) I agree. No more daft than a monkey giving a Nazi salute.
