The reason he encouraged his girlfriend and bullied his sick friend to skip school was to have a day together before heading off in different directions post High School and he doesn't want to do it alone. Cameron isn't on the verge of a nervous breakdown, he is reticent and has a bad relationship with his father. He goes a little nuts when Ferris reveals that the mileage has increased vastly on his father's prized car and so knowing his father will be pissed, freaks out slightly. Cameron accidently trashes his father's car and goes into a fake catatonic state until he realises he isn't a child but an adult and can actually stand up to his dad and take responsibility for his actions. The message of the film is apparently not to let life pass you bye and to engage with the wonderful world around you, unfortunately the voice spouting this interesting and somewhat affable belief is a selfish, manipulative, smug, tit.
