I think it's hard to look beyond The Phantom Menace, especially when Spielberg, when he collected the Empire award from George Lucas in 1998 said that the presentation would be the other way round next year as he had seen a rough cut of the phantom menace and it was amazing.

most recently Pans Labyrinth. Ok it was good, but not at all as amazing as it was made out to be.

Huge dissapointments would have been The Matrix (never bothered with the sequels), Batman Begins and the first POTC (again, didnt bother with the second, and wont with the final part)

"Van Helsing" - utter tosh of the first order, an example of how giving Stephen Sommers a bigger budget was a bad idea, from the great "Deep Rising" to the enjoyable "The Mummy" to the appalling "Mummy Returns" with its candidate for worst CGI ever to just utter dung!

"Troy" - Bad acting, bad dialogue, obviously made for screaming women wanting to see Brad with his top off. Rubbish!

Have to disagree about "War of the Worlds", aside from the ending it was brilliantly tense and well acted. "LOTR", the finest examples of filmic perfection, and I will always be an apologist for the prequels.

"Casino Royale" - Enjoyable, but so overrated, and Daniel Craig, the next worst Bond after Timothy Dalton.

The first "Spider-Man", bitterly disappointing; "Mystic River", so overrated it hurts.

Maybe King Kong (2005) though that was because of my ridiculously inflated expectations of it. Van Helsing is a defo, god I was looking forward to it, I remember it was a few days before I went back home from uni in first year and my housemates at the time all had to console me because of just how terrible it was. That shit with the exploding horse and carriage just did it for me really! Recently Miami Vice, just could not get into it and I tried both at the cinema and through Telewest. Michael Mann and Mogwai songs should have made it one of my best of last year but it just felt too stuck up its own arse. Fucking shame. Come on Simpsons Movie and Spider-Man 3!!!

I second that. Except for the final 30 mins it was a major disappointment from Mann. Farrell just mumbles and looks bored while Foxx is only left with the technical jargon and not much else to do. Also, is it just me, or was the whole love story thing in the middle just boring and pointless? And why set half of the film in fucking Cuba when it's Miami Vice???

Well obviously NOTHING was hyped as much as The Phantom Menace. But to be honest I really wasn't dissapointed after I first saw it. The thing is though, being a huge Star Wars fan, it was unlike any movie experience I've ever had. The whole thing was surreal. I couldn't focus on the film at the beginning. It really took a while for me to settle in. Once I did though I really enjoyed it. Heck, I didn't even hate Jar Jar (and as much as I tried to stay away from spoilers I heard rumors of him being damn annoying). But in retrospect, I think the reason I left the film satisfied was the last reel. Its really fucking good! When Duel of the Fates kicks in and then later when the hanger doors open to the start of the chorus and Darth Maul is just standing there like a total badass I just lost it. Then during the lightsaber fight my jaw hit the floor. Just insane! Really, at that point I was on cloud nine. Later of course I view the film somewhat differently (though I still think its good). But for that day back in 1999 for all the hype there was anything but dissapointment.

on a slightly off topic but related note. Some Future Films which I'm sure will be hyped to death and turn out to be rubbish for me would be 10,000BC and Justice League (I have no faith in this film at all - but i hope i'm proved wrong)

Jezzz where do I start? Hatchet, Pan's Lab and yes DK hype is starting to do my head in. Im sure it will be v.good after the cool trailer but it's hardly the second coming of cinema! That's one of the reason's I stopped buying Empire. They hype films to death (O'Hara explained they have to report on what the readers view as popular but that's no excuse for kissing the film makers ass only to trash the film in the next bloody issue! Haha)

For me it would be Atonment, I liked a couple of scenes in it and the art direction was second to non, but overall I thought it was a bit shit...over long, boring and I just didnt care for the characters and towards the end was waiting for them to die DIE DIE!!!!

Empire is written (as far as I can tell at least) by film lovers, and they obviously want Batman or Indy or whatever to be brilliant. If they're not you can guanrantee that Helen, Ian, Chris, Olly and co will be at least as gutted as all of us.

As for Pan's Labyrinth, cannot agree at all. That film is absolutely amazing!

I can see why people love Pan's Labyrinth and appreciate that it's viewed as a great movie but personally I found it a bit "meh" to be honest.

Your point regarding the writers being fans is a good one imo; anyone who sits down to watch a movie and says: "i want this movie to be shit so I can be miserable and complain about it" probably shouldn't be reviewing movies.

Youre experience with Phantom menace was pretty similar to mine Jack.I remember seeing it at a late screening on the saturday of the weekend it was released over here.It was an awesome experience,especially,the final duel of the fates battle.I remember leaving the cinema buzzing with excitement and wondering what would happen in the next one.

In later years,i agree the film does not stand up as well on repeat viewings(Though i did see it a total of five times at the cinema!)but its still a very enjoyable film.

If anything,The Matrix was overhyped by Empire by the time it reached our shores and i remember seeing it and thinking ''Well that was fun,but whats the big deal over it?''
