If the hype to disappointment was measured on a scale i.e. which film was I most excited about and yet most disappointed me - then Phantom Menace would win hands down.

I remember the chills down my spine of excitement at the trailers....i remember constantly bugging my girlfriend by acting like a giddy little schoolboy just at the films mention....then i remember that look she had on her face when I finally went to see it and my face was like I'd just found out the world was gonna end. I can remember the exact point I knew it was crap too...the moment the pod race started....as that is when the boyhood charm of star wars finally died in me.

Of course, i still got excited for the next 2....deep in the hope that childhood magic would be rekindled...but it never did. Each film was a slight improvement on the previous yes, but I still have no qualms in saying that Mr Mcgregor was truly awful in the last one....how he didn't get nominated for a razzie i'll never know....with his actual talent too...

For me the films in this topic would be wotw, hp+gof and anything with russel crowe or merel streep in. To those delusional people who think that LOTR was a dissappointment. I say get some therapy and soon.

I very rarely go into watching a film with expectations. Particualry anything I am seeing at the cinema. That way I tend not to be as disapointed. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was the last real dissapointment I had as I couldn't avoid everyone talking it up so subsconsiously I guess I was expecting something great but what I got was one of the worst movies I have seen

I agree with the Lord of the Rings films and Star Wars prequels I just couldn't understand what the fuss was all about.
I enjoyed The Fellowship of the Ring but I think it went downhill from there, sorry to the fans but I think they're overrated.
A big dissapointment for me was Hitch as well. I like Will Smith a lot, especially doing comedy, I still watch re-runs of the fresh prince and I think it's really funny so I was really looking foward to seeing Will Smith in a comedy. But I just didn't find it funny at all and I thought the script was rubbish!
Couldn't believe I wasted 12.99 on buying it!

I Have to add I went to see the Fellowship having only seen the trailer and to be honest it blew me away. The mines of Moria sequence is one of the best scenes in cinema I have ever seen and the experience of watching it on the big screen will stay with me forever.

Two Towers and Return Of The King paled in comparison

As much as I enjoyed Snakes on a Plane, it couldn't quite live up to the insane levels of pre-release hype it got.

I have to admit I fell asleep through The Matrix! My mate woke me up during the oracle scene. Really didn't get into it the first time I saw it. It's great now, mind. I think it's a top film.

I would have to agree with Tech with regards to LOTR.  There were some fantastic scenes such as Moria but it just didn't gel for me and seemed pretty erratic.  It looked lovely on the screen but a bit hollow.

I found Superman Returns a bit of a disappointment for too many varied reasons to really go into.  Partially due to the tone not suiting the character and also spotty continuity and dodgy characterisation it was nothing like the hype had suggested it was going to be.

Narnia one of the most bland films I have seen in years.  Nothing specifically wrong with it, just incredibly vanilla.

Hott Fuzz qualifies for me.

As much as I liked the movie it just didn't live up to the hype that started a few months after it was announced two or three years ago. Simon Pegg was the straight man which didn't suit him and I found myself waiting patiently for the heavily marketed "high octaned action" to start.

After looking in the Jack Black thread, I think School Of Rock was wayyyyyyy too hyped up. I got it when it came out on DVD and it wasn't half as funny as I was expecting. It's an ok film but I have no need to watch it again. I thought it would even be musically inspiring but it's not.

I think the Star Wars prequels definatly failed to deliver but thats my just my opinion. I always say that though.

but was that because (like me) you were a child of the originals?

the prequels were NEVER gonna live up to our expectations

Just because they are critically and publically acclaimed doens't mean everyone likes them.

The Two Towers was a huge dissapointment and only the EE helped it become watchable. Will repeat Timon's opinion on War of the Worlds. Was looking forward to it and ended up being one of the worst films I saw at the cinema last year.

Absolutely right. Me and the wife were bored to tears by the first two Lord of the Rings and never bothered watching the third one because we just couldn't face it. At 37 & 34 respectively we are a bit old to be 'just trying to get a reaction'. Some people just can't get on with certain films, and I have a feeling, once the 'technical achievement' aspect has died down, history won't look too kindly on the Lord of the Ring films as entertainments.

In terms of hype bringing disappointment, I would, as I said elsewhere, cite Borat, that didn't make me laugh anything like I thought it would.

The Matrix was OK at best. It began brilliantly - The bald black fellow helping Neo escape from the office was great, as was the rest of the beginning. However, there was certainly a lot of 'flab' in the middle of the film so-to-speak, by the time the Oracle reared her head in the midst of a ocean of tediousness I was seriously contemplating turning the VHS off. Thankfully, it picked up again near the ending, which was as good as the beginning. To be honest though, I really am mystified about the degree of excietment that follows this film around like an offensive odour.

Borat wasn't nearly as funny as people reported it would be - and wasn't as intelligent as the makers seem to think it is. I laughed a few times in the cinema, but I wasn't choking on my popcorn about it. Listen to Mark Kermode's review - the voice of sense in the centre of unjustified hype.

And for the record, The Fellowship of the Ring is the best film I've ever seen. Period.

I'm glad there are people on these boards who can look at stuff like this objectively; it really winds me up when some people cannot accept a different view from theirs..  It's a board for opinions; if we all had the same opinion life would be incredibly boring.  Just because someone doesn't share the same opinion as you does not make them wrong or an attention-seeker.

Don't get me wrong, all 3 LOTR films looked lovely and they were a great achievement, but the lack of pacing and woeful acting did for me I'm afraid.  Althought they did get progressively better.

I would echo Matrix: Reloaded.  After that I didn't have any hope or expectation for Revolutions anyway.

That's very interesting that you can categorically say that TFOTR is the best film you have ever seen. I have never been able to decide on a single film as my favourite. What is it you like particularly out of interest?

The Matrix Reloaded was shit. So was Revolutions.

I was also dissapointed with Slither, which people said was funny ala Evil Dead 2, but it was just crap.

I hate to be blunt, but those 3 films are complete bollocks.

And someone who thinks LOTR:FOTR is the best film ever needs to watch more films.

King Kong was vastly overhyped. It was a avaerage movie at best.

Return of the King was mega hyped and I came out of that dissapointed, it was just very dull.

Borat is just awful, it's not funny and everything just seems so staged.

Exactly it blows my mind how people can even slag off these blockbusters like lord of the rings trilogy anyone who is into films can see that they are some of the best films EVER made they won awards for christ sake These are 10 out of 10 films superb i dont understand why people on here keep slagging them off. I ve said it before if you dont like films about hobbits and fantasy stuff like that dont go and see it.

It has nothing to do with hobbits and fantasy. Its to do with pacing, direction, and editing.  There must be a million threads on here saying why and they certainly aren't 10 out of 10 films. As for awards only Return of the King won the awards and if anyone truly thinks it is a better film than Master and Commander or that Jackson's direction was than better than Weir's their opinions on films ain't worth a great deal.

Back OT

Huge Huge disapointments for me

TTT,  ROTK, Spiderman 2, Sin City, da Vinci Code, Star Wars Prequels.
