The fact that you include Sin City as a success and Narna as fairly shite tells me all I need to know.

Narnia was a massive success at the box office and was a massive success with its target audience. The fact that you can't grasp the good in a a film isn't made exactly for your age group is a sad testiment to the majority of so called film fans on this site.

How's about, I am Narnia's target audience. I loved the book as a child, ok now that I'm an adult I may be harder to please, but I think all 4 Harry Potter films are great for what they are and go as far to please their target audience. and They get slated quite frequently.

I've seen it and disappointment is the most accurate word to describe the film for me.

That's 2 in a row Spielberg - one more and you're outta here (not really, I was just trying to be cool).

lets see...
fantastic four
sin city
batman begins
brokeback mountain
munich
king kong
narnia

these are all films that left me feeling they just missed the point. munich had some terrific moments (i love the speech where the guy justifies terrorism) but was let down by a lack of direction and a sappy ending.

godfather let me down to, quite a lot of hype to that film too. my what a bore. not even any good bits. i mean even the sex scene was dull.

King Kong probably, not a HUGE disappointment but a pretty big one. All the things that annoyed me about lotr (cheesy dialogue, slow pace) and none of the stuff I loved. I think Jackson maybe needed to chill and regain all his creativity for a while after lotr rather than just jumping straight into another huge film. It actually makes me think that it'll be a good thing if The Hobbit doesn't appear for a good few more years. I don't usually get dissapointed though as I think I have some sort of psychic ability to tell if I'm gonna like the film or not before I actually watch it...

I shall concur with King Kong... the major problem was some of the pointless plotting (Hayes and Jimmy) and the special effects, for the most part, actually took me out of the film... the set-pieces also felt danger-free and I was stifling laughter during the big stampede.  The only effective scene was down in the chasm with those bugs, now that was good!  Aside from that I was surprisingly bored, a huge letdown.

Van Hesling I agree with too, not that I expected good from Sommers after 'The Mummy Returns', but the concept was just so fantastic I hoped and prayed that maybe the film would've at least been 'so bad, it's good'... alas... it was just an embarassment.

i know this is all about personal opinions and wotnot,,,
but how the hell can you find the godfather boring??

its a perfect lesson in how to script/cast/direct/shoot/score/pace/light and edit.
its rightly held as an icon of modern film making,
its so damn good.

as for the others,, well,, not seen em all,, but sin city lived upto and surpassed the hype for me,, batman begins was good,, i managed to miss out on most of the hype,, but i reckon despit a few flaws it is a pretty good interpretation.

The thing about this is that no matter how much you try to avoid it reviews and hype play with your expectations of a film. Itry to ignore what is said about films and make my own mind up, if I want to see a film I'll go no matter what the review said, but it will still influence your expectations for example:

I wanted to see fantastic four, yet everything pointed to a disappointing film from what I'd read, I went and with my expectations lowered really enjoyed what I saw. Now if I'd seen a load of 4 and 5 star reviews for the film I might have come away disappointed, having expected too much.

The same applies to over hyped films, my biggest example being LOTR (bear with me this isn't the I hate LOTR rant). I saw Fellowship in the cinema amougst all the hype, and frankly came away disappointed, am I saying Fantastic Four is a better film? Hell no! But I just didn't feel LOTR lived up to the hype, I didn't feel any of them did. That said, having watched all three films again after all the hype has past I can sit and watch them more objectively and I enjoy them, in fact I like them a lot, there not my favourite films but I can see that I was wrong in my first assessment of them, and I think that assessment came from the fact that I expected too much, because of the hype

Then you aren't the target audience. The audience they were aiming at is kids and parents, the two kids I took loved it as did quite a few of the other parents I have spoken to. Sure its not cinema at its best but then neither is Laberynth or Princess' Bride. Its just a good fun that kids love.  As for the Harry Potter comment HP is aimed at considerably highier audience than Narnia, certainly the lastest installment.

I'd say Hulk, I had this idea that it would be great, then it turned out to be a boring load of tripe,
by the way I thought Kong and WOTW were great.

I like this thread. So different from general consensus.  However, I think sometimes the problem is that people expect too much from films: all I ever want from a blockbuster is to enjoy myself. If it offers something so much more, like 2005's excellent run, so be it. I think some people expect too much because they have certain expectations of where the story should go: but with Munich, just because it's about the Mossad doesn't mean it's about Avner. Munich is easily Spielberg's best since Schindler's List. King Kong totally follows the story of the classic original and then some. Narnia is about the children, not an orgy of CG spectacle some expected.

I avoided reading the hype about War of the Worlds and went in seeing it not expecting to like it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, maybe because of my low expectations for it! Huge hyped films that have disappointed me were X-Men, Die Another Day and to some extents Troy; great supporting cast and storyline for Eric Bana, the rest - turgid.

It's got to be Kong for me.  There were stories of studio executives coming out of showings crying and saying that they were witnessing utter greatness.

Empire: 5 stars
Total Film: 5 stars
Hotdog: 5 stars

As for me; thought it was OK, well made but in no way did it live up to the hype that surrounded it.

Also like to say that I don't think the Island was hyped at all.  It pretty much landed with it's reputation in tatters already.  Shame because I think it's actually rather good.

I liked The Island as well. Certainly ten years on from Bad Boys it's a big step up for Mr. Bay, and I hope he does the Transformers justice.

Surprised your the first to mention them, I wasn't too mad about Reloaded, thought it went no where for about 35 minutes.

Hulk is a great film, its just not a standard comic book fare.  Roll on Hulk two and get Ang back on board.

I agree. Hulk is a flawed effort but nonetheless mature and intelligent, and a good set-up for a hopefully great sequel.

Most recently Munich disappointed me.  It was in no way a poor film by any stretch of the imagination but I was expecting better - still enjoyed it though

King Kong was the first to spring to mind for me too. Although "huge" disappontment would be stretching it more than a wee bit, I found it to be ultimately overlong, overindugent and overhyped.
