Had the great pleasure of seeing Zep live at the O2 a couple of years ago, which led to some great memories and a persistant ringing in my ears for hours afterwards. The whole arena almost achieved lift-off when Kashmir was played.

  1. Stairway To Heaven
  2. Going To California
  3. Ten Years Gone
  4. Kashmir
  5. Since I've Been Loving You
  6. Good Times Bad Times
  7. The Rain Song
  8. That's The Way
  9. Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You
  10. Over The Hills And Far Away
I'm getting softer in my old age so it leans more towards their lighter side these days.

Great choices! And the fact we have only one song in common signifies what an amazing band Zeppelin really was.

Yeah, it was an incredible night, wasn't it?  More than made up for the bloody awful support acts!

Anyway, my choices:

1. Since I've Been Loving You
2. The Rain Song
3. The Lemon Song
4. Thank You
5. When The Levee Breaks
6. Kashmir
7. Achilles' Last Stand
8. The Rover
9. That's The Way
10. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You

Yep, probably a much softer list than it would have been 30 years ago when I first started listening to them...

I'll never forget chatting to a dentist from Oregon in a bar in the O2 before the show.  The concert had cost him in excess of $50,000 - several thousand for the tickets, then first-class return transatlantic flights and rooms at a top hotel for him and his best pal, a $10,000 diamond necklace for his wife to make up for taking his friend instead of her, and a few grand on top class hookers for them both every night they were in London -  that guy knew how to party!

Anyway, interesting to see that Stairway doesn't feature as prominently in the lists as I expected it to - played to death or just not as good as the rest of the tracks?  I know in my case it's the latter, great song but not even close to the best.

There is definitely a hi-def recording of the O2 gig - we were standing beside one of the camera positions, and got chatting to the cameraman who confirmed that it was being recorded for a planned future release.  There was a show on BBC2 a couple of weeks ago about Plant that included some of the O2 footage and it looked great.

Seeing them at O2 will keep me smiling and rocking til the day I expire:

1) Since I've Been Loving You
2) In The Light
3) When The Levee Breaks
4) Trampled Under Foot
5) The Wanton Song
6) Kashmir
7) In My Time of Dying
8) Custard Pie
9) The Rover
10) For Your Life

This is today's list, I guarantee tommorow's will be entirely different, it may even have the odd In Through The Out Door Track (especially I'm Gonna Crawl).  The Physical Graffiti tracks will always be present, and may be joined by others from quite possibly my favourite album of all time.

Just in case news hasn't yet filtered down, the film footage is finally seeing the light of day, with a one-day-only cinema showing of Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day on 17th October, followed by the DVD/Blu Ray release of the show in November.  About bloody time!!

Never rated them myself, but certainly wish they stuck with Terry Reid as vocalist.

I'm undecided about whether or not to get the O2 show. Bits from the concert I have seen didn't impress me that much, but then they were all on YouTube and filmed on a mobile phone...

Sort-of related, in my one and only experience of the Glastonbury Festival, I saw Page and Plant at the 1995 fest and stood next to me was none other than Michael Eavis himself (Zepp being one of his favourite bands, he wanted to hear them properly as opposed to from the side of the stage as he normally does). He was bloody loving them, but I have to say I was disappointed - it was basically a half assed performance (in my opinion) and, on the Zepp songs they played, whilst Michael Lee did a reasonably good job of filling Bonzo's shoes (although he was not as good a drummer as Bonzo Junior), the absence of JPJ stuck out like a very sore thumb. Kashmir just didn't sound right at all.

I've seen quite a lot of the hand-held footage on youtube and it doesn't even come close to doing the event justice.  Certainly the clips of the HD recording that were shown on BBC's Robert Plant night last year were as good as I remember.

The only negative of Zepp's performance on the night was that the opener, Good Times Bad Times, was a bit shambolic at times - Jason Bonham seemed a little overwhelmed by the occasion when they first came on stage and it took him a couple of songs to settle down.  But once he did they were amazing - Kashmir was easily the highlight for me, with huge swirling mandalas being projected all over the stage and arena  while that riff blasted out.  Hard to believe it was nearly 5 years ago now...

Celebration Day without a doubt the greatest concert movie I have ever seen. Led Zeppelin are so tight throughout it's unreal. For Your Life was my highlight of the whole film, and Kashmir and Stairway to Heaven were phenomenal. My best pal left ranting about Jimmy Page, safe to say he has been converted !

To be fair, Page IS one of the most wildly inconsistent guitar gods on the planet.
