 I'll leave it as undecided for right now, and if there's a huge demand for it then I might include it, but I'm absolutely not convinced of its horror credentials and as of right now I'm 95% likely to not allow it.

It is clearly a horror film. A creature picks off a group of people, one by one - that is what a slasher is.

In fact I think Alien 3 is commonly refered to as "gothic horror".

 Not the best way to sell me on it, Hughes. 

Like I say, I won't make a decision on it right now and if there is a strong feeling it should go in then it probably will, but if it's mixed then it goes to counter's decision and it'll be out.

 Rawls, there is no way, no how, that Alien 3 isn't a horror film. It has body horror and slasher (a single, seemingly invincable creature picks off people one by one)style killings. These two things alone put it in the horror brackets. It has a gothic tone, and is often considered a closer sibling to Alien, than the Cameron film.

Apologies for just jumping into the thread, but I just can't believe that Alien3 isn't being considered a horror. It has the claustrobic atmosphere and general sense of dread which Alien is lauded as having. Can't get my head around it.

 Aliens, Alien 3 and LofG are all perfectly valid entries in the horror genre.

Passion of Christ is historical epic
Children of Men is the best Mexican movie ever made (and it is also clearly sci-fi)
Vertigo is a thriller

I do believe Dog Soliders will have a place in my list.

Passion is an interesting one, because of some of the visual flourishes, but it is still in the same genetic pool as stuff like The Robe and Last Temptation of Christ.

LoG Christmas Special really was spooky.

I also like how no one is that bothered if Alien Ressurection doesn't get counted.

 Doctor Who should really just be a catch all, and the blurb can justify why it is in there - otherwise we are going to spend forever debating indivdual episodes.

I think most people wish it didn't even exist.

Alien3, like I say, it doesn't convince me, but if it convinces the board at large (which it seems to) then I'll let it in.

Passion of the Christ I'm including solely on the basis of the Kermode review of it as a religious horror film (think it was Kermode anyway) and I'm anticipating it coming up. Children of Men because it is in the same kind of apocalyptic style as other films that I will include (No Blade of Grass, for example)

Scores so far

Aliens - Yes 3 No 1
Alien3 - Yes 4 No 0
LoGXmas Yes 1 No 2
Passion of Christ Yes 1 No 2
Children of Men Yes 0 No 4
Vertigo Yes 0 No 3

No New Who at all for Doctor Who - the overall story arcs are too strong and they carry on from series to series. Old Who - only the obvious stand-alone horror influenced ones, others will be an outright no. So there's only a small handful of Who eligible. I'm going to be very very strict in this.

If Dr Who is the series in it's entirety then it has to be excluded under the rules stated up front - it's not a self-contained story. Personally, I think some of the storys within it are though.

But I'd rather Fang Rock be left off my list than try to justify an entry for Dr Who the series.

 Yes, I think there are DW stories that are far more overtly horror than SciFi - but they're in the minority. I'd much rather place them individually than put in the series en masse.

I think you have to exclude the new series entirely - they pretty much all work towards themed arcs rather than individually (with Silence it was the repeated motif of the creation of a new/other world for Donna that would finally come to fruition in Turn Left - Donna's choice)

Yeah, this is pretty much where it stands. People can make cases for individual stand-alone stories, some are obviously ok, others might need justifying. The entire series won't be allowed. New Who won't be allowed because the show-runners drop the arcs into the individual seasons so nothing is really stand-alone.

 The Quiet Family is fine. Memories... not sure. I'm leaning towards putting it with Zodiac, but the approach at times means that I think a case could be made for it. Anyone have strong feelings one way or the other?

Btw, I'm closing the vote on Alien3, the overwhelming feeling obviously is in favour, so it seems pointless to drag it out. I'll allow Alien3. I'm going to say it seems to be no to Children of Men, so that's out, the other four votes are more mixed so they can stay open.
