Given that a number of films can cross the boundary between sci-fi and horror quite easily, it makes sense to run this poll alongside Homer's sci-fi poll. I'm even going to set the deadline date as  28th Feb 2011. Lists of 100 or of 50 films are accepted (probably go as far as 25 if someone can't make 50) and can be sent to empirehorrorlist@gmail.com

For this poll, t.v. productions are acceptable, but at most I'd restrict it to a mini-series as one entry. So Quatermass and the Pit is fine for an entry, Supernatural or Buffy isn't. Individual entries of anthology series are also fine, so if there's a particular Twilight Zone, Play for Today, etc that you're passionate about then feel free to vote for it.

As for what classes something as horror, common sense should apply, but horror is a fairly wide genre. Obviously supernatural horror counts, but just because something has a ghost it doesn't mean it's a horror (Sorry, PA, you can't vote for Casper ) Something with a serial killer can count in certain cases, the gothic atmosphere and the focus on Lecter as a boogeyman figure would put Silence of the Lambs into the horror territory but something like Zodiac falls into police procedural. Horror can overlap with thriller as well as sci-fi. If you're uncertain then feel free to use the thread to query something.

Individual early stories of Dr. Who are fine. There was less emphasis on continuity and they can count as stand-alones. The story-arcs of new-Who disqualify them (even the magnificent Blink) sorry. Sapphire & Steel cases count as individuals as well.

I don't know why you're trying to resurrect this when it was proven that you're the one who believes in ghosts, you wimp.

I'm in for yet another poll.

I'll have to double-check everything you've reviewed, but off the top of my head,  I think so.

That's fine, G'. As are other comedy-horrors like A & C meet Frankenstein, The Cat and the Canary, What a Carve Up!, Carry on Screaming, Shaun of the Dead, etc.

The Passion of the Christ was practically torture porn, but less enjoyable.

Count me in for this. After staring forlornly at my DVDs and Blu-rays for inspiration for homer's sci-fi thread I realised how much horror I actually own and love.

A Chump at Oxford? I don't remember a lot of horror in that one, I thought you'd have gone for The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case.

I couldn't help laugh at parts of Passion, the endless slo-mo and close-ups of grotesque faces as they were beating up Jesus just cracked me up in the end. I'm not sure I can take any film seriously where Jesus becomes a Mary-Sue for Mel's S&M bent. But cool, glad to have you on board.

I won't be taking part in this one as I can summarise the horror films I've seen right here.

The Orphanage
The Devil's Backbone
The Others
The Host (do monster movies count as horror?)
REC
Halloween
Passion of the Christ (?)
Captain Corelli's Mandolin (in which a beautiful book is brutally hacked to pieces by a Madden man)
Precious

Nah I don't want to fill up two months watching Horror. It's not something I particularly care for unless, like the first three entries on my list, it's a creepy ghost story. I always like them.

Oh wait, Let the Right One in is horror, isn't it? I'd vote for that, I think, if I had 40 more films to back up this lot.

If you're struggling I'd be ok with a list of 25. And I'm more than happy to recommend ghost stories.

Dictionary definition of horror is 'intense and profound fear' which is certainly what he experienced during Iron Man

Yes please! And I'll see what I can scrape together from my database. Expect loose definitions of horror, i.e. Pan's Labyrinth?

Poor PA, can't vote for Iron Man,  can't vote for Casper, he'll be heartbroken when I tell him he wasn't supposed to be scared of The Groovie Goolies.

Pan's Labyrinth, yes, I have no problems with this at all. Horror in general is an offshoot of fantasy, while something like LotR remains on the side of fantasy (despite a few moments that could qualify) I think the approach taken by del Toro means it qualifies as horror.

For some ghost stories, try a few of these, some of them aren't ghost stories exactly, but the approach is so similar that you might enjoy them.

Night of the Demon
Penda's Fen
BBC's A Ghost Story for Christmas series
Ghost Watch
Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense episode In Possession
Don't Look Now
The Woman in Black
The Fog
The Haunting
The Stone Tape
The Innocents
Carnival of Souls
Dead of Night
The Uninvited
Whistle and I'll Come to You
Session 9
Kwaidan
Schalken the Painter
The Queen of Spades
Dead of Night episode Exorcism

This is appropriate given one of your recommendations -

You're just angry Homer got on the joke that can't backfire before you did, Mr. "I Crap Myself When Watching Just Like Heaven Because Ghosts Are Real And Scaaaaaary".

The scene in the maze with the student dressed as a ghost. It scared Stan and Ollie, so it's a horror
