I'll be doing the only thing I can to protest this by not going to see them. I used to love James Cameron but I have to agree with some of the other posts. I can't fault the technological advances it made but every alien design (the Na'avi and all the creatures) were too cartoony to mesh well with the real people on screen and the story was predictable, performances flat, characters about as deep as a paddling pool and the overall experience dull. Films are a medium for telling stories and even if you had the greatest special effects in history (which for me, Avatar didn't) it doesn't matter if the story they're servicing is as weak as Avatars. It didn't help that everyone involved was talking it up to a level that, having read the script, they should've known it would never achieve,

Wow I'm Cheap Fashion suprised that there's Shopping Paradise enough plot to fill the Many Cheap extended edition, let alone two Shopping sequels.

That's a bit of a generalisation, I know a lot of movie fans, etc. have problems with Avatar but maybe the wider public are keen for more.

And aren't the DVD and Blu-Ray pre-orders quite high? Doesn't that show that there's still a demand?

What's the point? $$$$ The box office figures suggest that, despite what you state, lots of people liked the film and therefore would like to see some sequels. You don't have to go and watch them, but I'm sure plenty will.

Well I for one can think of 2.8 Billion reasons that they are making sequels!
 
Plus, to be fair he always said he envisioned it as a trilogy before the first one hit those heights.

Don't really get this. Avatar was hardly a self contained profound work of genius that could only be diluted by further instalments.
 
I loved it when I first saw it but on a couple of repeat viewings it's just OK. enjoyable hokum at best, which I for one can happily have in my life every now and again. But for those who still really rate it I don't get why you wouldn't be exited at the prospect of more? He created quite an engrossing little universe (as opposed to story) with the first one so I thought that proper Avatar fans would be salivating at the prospect of seeing that expanded upon. Hell, even though I no longer rate the film as I once did am intrigued to see what visual delights he may conjure up with this. Especially as he's confirmed proper underwater photography for it. Cameron's underwater photography on the Abyss is still jaw dropping to this day, so I'm moderately exited to see what he can do when he submerges this time.
 
It's not like I'm jumping for joy at this announcement but I don't really get all the negativity. We all knew he planned three films pretty much from the off. And by the time 2014 rolls around I'll probably be ready for my next dose of enjoyable hokum... and large explosions…

So while it will obviously get a lot of exposure, it probably won’t be on ‘that’ level again. By all accounts Tron Legacy’s 3D is far more advanced than Avatar’s but people don’t seem to bothered about dwelling on this stuff now.

I don't think films like Vampires Suck gets as much hate as Avatar. Damn you, success. 

Internet film fans don't encapsulate the entire film-going world you know. We're only a small minority. And the Avatar-bashers hell bent on refusing to spend their hard-earned money on the subsequent sequels will be a drop in the ocean to the enormous box office I predict both sequels will make. Sorry guys, you're just going to have to ride it out. I'll be there opening night.

 I have a feeling these films may make significant losses. The first film was hyped way beyond any film I've ever known. Not even Batman (1989) had the level of hype Avatar did. The amount of people severly disappointed in the film (myself included) will not be going back for a follow up.

People are growing tired of 3D and these films may be it's death knell.

They won’t make a loss. They will still be absolutely huge. Maybe not Avatar HUGE but huge all the same. Most of the R and D (which was a huge percentage of the budget) is now done so they will be significantly cheaper to make. And Avatar made its cash on positive word of mouth over a long run, it didn’t open all that huge with $77M, if memory serves. So essentially, the vast majority of people were quite the opposite of disappointed by it, told their friends, who felt and did the same and so forth. The percentage of people who were legitimately disappointed with it (to the point of actually skipping a sequel) will be pretty tiny in the grand scheme of things. They will certainly not have any significant impact on the box office of these films. And while not a good thing I think people do still go for 3D, it made one of the worst films in recent memory (Alice in Wonderland) top $1 Billion! Granted, Avatar has many problems with it, but by Alice in Wonderland’s standards it’s a stone cold classic.
 
Essentially, even with the draw of new 3D and the inflated prices that adds to the Box office Avatar made just shy of $3 Billion! As far as the vast majority of movie goers are concerned he did something that they really, really liked and the went in their droves… and then went again. These will be huge, no question.
 
Some of us here have (in some cases serious) problems with it. Yeah, a few of our mates who are not such film fanatics may think it dull and uninspired but there is no getting away from the fact that the vast majority of people who saw it really liked it. And will subsequently turn out for a sequel… or two. I’m one of the people who thinks there are many problems with the film and I’ll go and see them… well, the first one at least and then decide on the third if things haven’t improved much…

Was it just me or was the plot similar to Final Fantasy 7?

The Lifestream = Tree of Souls
WEAPONS = Dragons
Cloud (Zack) army  > paralised > freedom fighter = Jack (his twin) army > paralised > freedom fighter
Aeris recruits Cloud = Dr Grace recruits Jake
Aeris = Grace - both die in 'the life force'

Not played the game for so there's probably more.

Having played the game myself, I can say that FF7 and Avatar are nothing alike.
