Despite the glowing review here, this isn't really in the league of Clueless or 10 Things, mainly because it's trying too hard to be and is a little too self-referential for my taste; there's times where you want the film to stop pointing out where it's pilfered its riffs from and just get on with telling you the story. Despite these criticisms, there are plenty of things to recommend here, not least Emma Stone's absolutely knockout performance in the lead role (a star is born, people!), a bright fun tone and snappy dialogue, and Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci's offbeat adorable parents (Tucci in particular is an absolute hoot throughout). The supporting actors are all well chosen, but there's probably not enough of Thomas Haden Church's deeply uncool yet cool at the same time teacher, which makes you wonder why they cast such a big actor in there. A very loose adaptation of the source material, but almost certainly the most fun one.
