Granted the film never got made but there's a certain fascination with it, especially given the amount of talent involved and how long it took before it was canned.
Nicolas Cage as Superman and Kevin Spacey as Luthor, a role he eventually played, what are everyone's thoughts on this?
Apart from I'm an idiot for posting this here.

Apart from the fact that youre an idiot for posting this here..

This is a favourite films thread,as in films that were made, that we saw,and that we love.Tim Burtons Superman film with Nicolas Cage was never made(Thank god) so this thread is just pointless.Someone should lock this and be done with it.

It can be a favourite unmade film.

Cage as Superman would be great.

It likely would have sucked, but in a totally different way to how Superman Returns sucked.

With Jon Peters producing it was only ever going to be terrible - just look at the concept design for the costume:

That can't be during Peters time - he has a cape!

I wouldnt have minded seeing it. I read the JJ Abrams script online and there is a big metallic spider in that one too, though it is braniac. Its barmy and a bit silly, but fantastical and sounded pretty big in scope. Given what we got was Returns, im interested as to how others would have turned out. At least Snyder is sorting something out!

Isn't the Abrams one the one with the crap Lex-related plot twist?

It looked terrible!

Oh that is a beaut! THE HAIR!!!!

I’ve seen that picture before but just always assumed it was a fake or photoshopped… probably because it’s all kinds of atrocious! Is it actually form the test itself then?

Superman looks like Brad Dourif in those pix! I'm not sure where the Cage pic coame from to be honest Pete but it does tie in with the direction that they were trying to bring the appearance of the character, especially the suit.

I know! I think it's the 'regeneration' suit from the second half of the Smith script.

I cant remember, I did read a script with that and they do some kung fu in the air and its the suit or something that holds the power. I must have got mixed up with the Burton one because when writing my first post I was thinking about a story with Braniac, featuring Doomsday and Braniac blotting out the sun to counter Supermans powers. Superman needs the Eradicator technology which lends itself as a protective suit which enhaces his powers (after he returns from the dead after doomsday) and fights Braniac.

Really outrageously fantastical and silly but Ill be honest, I would be more drawn to watch that over Returns given a choice.

Thats the Kevin Smith script. The Abrams one had the whole Krypton doesn't explode/Lex is an alien/the suit is living/giant robots attacking D.C/Jor El talks Supes back to life.

The Smith script was actually okay, though I never particularly loved it.

These just surfaced online!

Now that is a radical alteration on the costume... and then some!

Just when you think the stuff from this failed project couldn't get any more moronic - Burton and Peters raise the bar! Even the actor in the suit looks miserable about it!

Those suits are mental! But then again didn't the comics have a blue and white suited Superman at the time, the suit had some weird electrical current thing going on as well, so maybe not as unfaithful as some think.

Cage as Superman I would have been gagging to see, however Burton directing a Superman movie not so much, it just is not his scene.

They did - and it was appalling, but this goes even beyond that!

More from the 'what could have been' file:

http://www.slashfilm.com/costume-test-photos-tim-burtons-superman-lives/

Just had a look at all 30 shots on the Facebook page. This should have been made! It would have been one of the most visually arresting things (read as mental! ) ever committed to film. The suit looks pretty incredible with all the lights and reflections. A departure granted but I would have liked to have seen how this would have turned out regardless!

I count seven faces on their concept for Doomsday. Cool!

The more I see of Burton's 'vision' of this project, I'm glad it never happened. Having said that, would it have been as disastrous as Singer's film...?

I’m a Superman purist myself but that suit is just fantastic! Absolutely brilliant design work on it! Not sure about the green near the end but when it is glowing blue it’s utterly mesmeric, I think it’s beautiful. Makes me wish the film had been made!

Yeah, have to agree, in motion it looks fantastic - the jury's still out on whether it works for Superman I think, but would love to see it in a film one day.

You take away Supermans traditional suit and it kills it for me. Burton would have fucked this up good style, no doubt about it. And Nic Cage as Superman?!?!? Awful casting. Truly awful. This deserves its seat in development hell and it should burn there for ever.

incidentally, Kevin Smiths talk on the subject on An Evening with... is insightful and hilarious

There is a KickStarter project that is aiming to make a documentary which would tell the story of the proposed 1998 "Superman Lives" feature film!

"The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? is a Feature Length Documentary about the unmade movie "Superman Lives". This film, out of all the various attempts to make a Superman movie between 1987 and 2006, would have stood the test of time and become a bonafide Cult Classic nowadays. I am not alone with my intense interest in knowing everything I can about this project, and so now I'm embarking on making a Documentary that will cover everything ever made for this film, from interviewing as many people as I can who were involved, to including actually recreating scenes from the script!!!"

The artwork featured in the trailer alone staggers my mind!
