Dreamworks' 2D animated movies are all quite impressive and it's a shame that, except for the previous Prince of Egypt, they all flopped.  The Road To Eldorado is a terrific adventure which is clearly inspired by the 'Road' movies and then adds more typical 'animated movie' elements such as funny animals and a hissable villain.  It would either succeed or fail on acoung of it's two main characters Julio and Miguel, and fortunately, it succeeds, with the two Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline-voiced heroes being helarious throughout.  Their constant bickering is a joy yet you still sense their love for each other.  As an adventure the film is terrific for the first third, then stalls a little in the middle, as writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio find little for the characters to do.  Then things recover for some superb action sequences with things like a giant robot monster and a bursting dam, aided by terific animation which, as usual, is mostly 2D but adds 3D elements.  There's an oddly sexual romantic subplot which some may find a little adult for kids [though of course you don't actually see anything untoward] but what really lets it down are the songs by The Lion King's Elton John and Tim Rice, which sound like they were rushed off in an afternoon, though the score by Hans Zimmer [who did some of his best work for animated films] and John Powell is very good indeed. Things end on an amusing note and with suggestions of a possibel sequel. Sadly it wasn't to be but I would have loved to see Julio and Miguel go on to explore another land.  Despite a few flaws this is a really fun and breezy cartoon.

A predictable story and thin characters is what made the movie flat.
