*After using the handy-dandy 'search' function, all I came up with was a thread which read more like some sort of 'versus' debate. And so with the kind permission of the Mods, I'd like to try again for a new thread purely for the two GREMLINS films. If I'm mistaken I apologise in advance guys.

I feel really old when I think back to 1984 and remember going crazy for GREMLINS (yeah, got the stickers, toys books etc.), I recall how big a deal it was at the time that 'The Man who made E.T.' had made a new film about little monsters that was 'too scary' for kids and sure enough, it was the combination of this film and INDIANA JONES & THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (released the same year) that lead to the creation of the 'PG-13' rating in America.  I LOVE GREMLINS! It's such a beautiful homage to the 50's B-Monster Movies and old episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE and the film that defined Joe Dante's style. Fantastic score by Jerry Goldsmith and cracking creature FX by Chris (THE FLY) Walas.

Now for some reason, GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH seems to be somewhat maligned by critics nad some audiences but I tink it's one of the funniest and most creative sequels ever! The entire film plays out like an extended in-joke on the original - cameos aplenty and it features excellent pre-CGI effects courtesy of Rick Baker. There has been talk of a third film but other than your average 'internet rumour of the month', nothing solid has ever been announced (a bit like the proposed third GHOSTBUSTERS film).

I LOVE Gremlins so much.  It's always a must watch Christmas movie. And this guy was a right bastard:

What a bad-ass.

I remember my mum taking myself and my younger sister to see the second one and while not a patch on the first film was still great.  Gotta love the Rambo Gizmo:

For Sure!

These are great films, and the first one always gets put on at Christmas. Though I must admit I like the 2nd one a bit more!

Absolutely! And I also really dig Mr. Goldsmith's take on his own score from RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II

There are so many little homages in the second film that are often either missed or forgotten - Christopher Lee's 'Dracula-esque' death, the BATMAN emblem imprint, the Bat-Gremlin's flight in New York city resonating Q: THE WINGED SERPENT, Jerry Goldsmith's cameo as the complaining customer - Cool Stuff!  Something that always makes me laugh is the fire-alarm / voice in the CLAMP Building which yells "Fire! The Untamed Element! Giver of Warmth, Destroyer of Forests! Yes, this building is on Fire! Run! Re-enact the age  old drama of self-preservation!!"

A small component of the GREMLINS films I love is 'The Three Rules'. I remember as a kid after watching GREMLINS at the cinema with my Mum, at school , me and my mates were all quoting the rules to each other in the school playground (probably whilst swapping the Panini stickers).  It's such a simple little factoid from the film that everyone remembers that has become part of the pop-culture link that has made it such a classic.  I also love the fact that a mere year later, there was of course a neat little reference in THE GOONIES.

I adore both movies, the second is one of the best sequels ever, Dante basically had free run of whatever he wanted to do and made the craziest sequel ever, plus its Robert Picardo in it  Is it just me, or was Marla the redhead really, really hot? The brain gremlin is hilarious as well "Theres the Broadway shows we'll have to find out how to get tickets, I also believe theres a lot of street crime but I think we can watch that for free"

I LOVE the brain gremlin's first few lines:

(in gremlin voice) "Iiiiiiii....WANNNNAAAAA (changes to Tony Randall) Talk a little bit about whats going on this room you see.."

classic stuff

fuck it I'm watching these during the week, its been about a year since I last watched em.

Has anyone ever watched the Making Of on the Gremlins 2 dvd? its hilarious, making gizmo out to be a prima donna on the set and how much mayhem the gremlins themselves caused, really tongue in cheek but very funny:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYDMNrsHmUM

How gorgeous is Phoebe Cates in both of these as well, om nom nom

Brilliant films.
Funny, scary and just so much fun! Gremlins 2 is really one of the best sequels ever. They don't make 'em like this for the younglings anymore.

Gremlins is one of my favourite films of all time, I watch it every Christmas. I love the sequel too, but not as much. It certainly is one of the best sequels ever made though. I saw it in the cinema when it was first released

I love the sequel too. BUT the one thing I can't stand is this old fart...

'Grandpa Fred' or whatever the f**k his name was, he was just crap. His character lent absolutely nothing to drive the film's narrative. He easily qualifies as one of the most pointless characters of all time, EVER. It's almost as if the actor portraying him really was just some washed-up old TV actor from the 50's and the only reason he got the GREMLINS 2 gig was 'cos Dante had a soft spot for those whack old sci-fi films he appeared in and gave him a job so he wouldn't get evicted.

The New Batch is the best of the two films, and one of the greatest sequels of all time. It's funnier, and sends up classic films big time. Plus the added bonus of my favourite actor, Christopher Lee, who is clearly enjoying himself as the mad scientist, Dr. Catheter.

Aww man, I LOVE the first Gremlins (but to my shame, I don't have it on DVD.  Yet...!)

I haven't seen the second one as often, or recently, so can't really add much.  It certainly was a lot more fun and not as dark as its predecessor, though.

Aw I like Robert Prosky in this, hes a great actor, really good character actor. He was the projectionist in Last Action Hero.

One of the cool things about THE NEW BATCH is the appearance of Bugs, Daffy and Porky during the opening and end credits. On the commentary track, Joe Dante reveals that the opening shot of New York city was supposedly from unused dailies on SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE.

I rented both films a while back. Brought back a lot of memories- mainly gremlin-related.
I like that the first one got a bit nasty. Horror for children.

One line of the brainy gremlin that has stuck with me (probably because it was in the trailer)-
"Now, is that civilised? No, clearly not." Something like that.
