I was going to have Queenie in my list too but thought she might be ineligible as a historical character?

I haven't watched much of M*A*S*H after the third series cause i feel it wasn't the same after Trapper and Henry left but surely Winchester was just a direct copy of Frank Burns much like VJ was basically just Trapper with a different name and actor, correct me if i'm wrong i still have to do my list

You're wrong.  They filled a similar kind of antagonistic role but Winchester was never as cruel as Frank. He was arrogant but he stood up for his friends and sometimes showed real kindness. He was an extremely skilled surgeon, intelligent and more than a match for Hawkeye and BJ who got on better with him than they ever did with Frank. He was also a more well developed character than Frank was. BJ and Trapper were completely different characters again, BJ was a committed family man, he had stronger morals and he was often more the straight man where Trapper was more of a clown. MASH was very good at introducing characters who weren't just carbon copies of the people they were replacing.

That's fair enough, as i've said i haven't watched much after Trapper and Henry left, sure i thought BJ was VJ, although mainly it was Potter who put me off and also i prefer the movie. But thanks for correcting me on that.

Quick question, do Wallace and Gromit count or do they have to be from proper series?

I agree with Snowth's take on MASH. The replacements were very good characters. I think I'm in the minority though when I saw I prefer the later years of the show to the early ones.

I admit, it took me a long while to warm to BJ, but that was because I just loved every scene was Trapper was in. Brilliant character and it was great whenever he was mentioned after he left. Frank was a buffooon though and Charles was a better character in every respect.

Frank was undoubtedly a one-note character (part of the reason Larry Linville left, I believe) and out of all the replacement characters, Charles was definitely the best. But if a M*A*S*H episode doesn't have Hawkeye, Trapper, Henry, Frank and Klinger in a dress then it's just not worth bothering with in my opinion.

Would that not go against your rule about not including non fictional characters, YFU?

Well I'm not sure to be honest. I've never watched Blackadder and from what I could gather from Wikipedia isn't the character a painting/portrait, wouldn't that make it fictional? I'm happy for some direction on this one as, like I say, I've never really watched the show...

Well, she is meant to be Elizabeth I so I'd say she shouldn't be included according to the rules you've set for this, especially if characters from Band Of Brothers and Rome can't be included (and rightly so)

Then again it's your poll, so I could shut up if you like

After a little more research (asking a few other people) I'll have to rule out Queenie on the same grounds as Ceasar and Spartacus etc. It's hard for me to judge on characters from shows I have never seen which is where fellow forumites opinions come in handy!

Okay, here we go...

1)      Josh Lyman (The West Wing)
2)      Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly)
3)      Homer Simpson (The Simpsons)
4)      Father Ted Crilly (Father Ted)
5)      Fox Mulder (The X-Files)
6)      CJ Cregg (The West Wing)
7)      Liz Lemon (30 Rock)
8)      Harley Quinn (Batman: The Animated Series)
9)      The Doctor (Doctor Who)
10)  Rodimus Prime (The Transformers)
11)  President Josiah Bartlet (The West Wing)
12)  Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
13)  Edmund Blackadder (Blackadder)
14)  Toby Ziegler (The West Wing)
15)  Hank Moody (Californication)
16)  Starscream (The Transformers)
17)  Garfield (Garfield and Friends)
18)  Chandler Bing (Friends)
19)  Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Police Squad)
20)  Hank Scorpio (The Simpsons)
21)  Don Draper (Mad Men)
22)  Batman (Batman: The Animated Series)
23)  Bender (Futurama)
24)  Rick (The Young Ones)
25)  Arnold J Rimmer (Red Dwarf)
26)  Dana Scully (The X-Files)
27)  Peggy Olson (Mad Men)
28)  Joan Holloway (Mad Men)
29)  Hoban "Wash" Washburne (Firefly)
30)  Al Calavicci (Quantum Leap)

Despite my feeling that characters originating outside of TV - eg Batman - shouldn't be included, as the rules don't prohibit it I've decided to include a few.  Their placing here reflects their TV incarnations, and not how they appear in other media (which is why Batman's so low down!).

Anyway, good luck with the poll, can't wait to see the results!

I've never watched Blackadder

I'm not being mean, I am merely shocked. Edmund Blackadder is a legend and the show (2, 3 and 4 more than 1 a little bit) is one of the all time classics of all time classics. Hysterical, poignant, brilliantly scripted with genius characters, all possessing magical timing. If someone were to posit that it was the greatest show of all time I wouldn't really argue. Please, please, please, get them from somewhere. You can skip the first one if you like as his character changed for the subsequent 3 series.

As to M*A*S*H*, who here didn't cry as Hawkeye flies off at the end? Anyone?

This is gonna be the hardest list of all time, but I'm really looking forward to it. I love Omar but I feel it'll be a littel silly if he wins. He hasn't stood the test of time yet. Off the top of my head I have a feeling Bender or Brannigan are gonna be high up. They will for me anyway.
