I have never actually watched it but from what I can gather the characters aren't fictional or even semi fictional so I would say it's out. Obviously the rules are causing a great deal of confusion though and I will be willing to accept certain shows characters (Rome/I Claudius/Deadwood) if the majority of forumites thought it was the right thing to do. My main aim when I set up this poll was to obviously only include fictional characters as I honestly think counting real life people such as Richard Winters as TV Characters is some what disrespectful as they aren't characters.

It's getting a little frustrating to tell the truth as in my kind it's pretty easy to separate a fictional tv character from a non- fictional one. I'm happy to discuss accessions for the sake of peace and harmony...and easy reading/counting.

I really just want the forums general opinion....

I don't see why you should have to change the criteria, YFU. You've made it pretty clear what will count and what won't and I think it's tough if people don't like it. It's not as though there aren't enough fictional characters to choose from, is it?

The reason I ask about Claudius is that it's not really based on history as such, rather a fictionalised historical novel by Robert Graves, whereby an awful lot of artistic licence has been taken. Same with Deadwood. Band of Brothers and Pacific have strong first person autobiography in their source material so that does make it very much non fiction.

I don't really get this, are you accusing YFU of gerrymandering? Because he loves Band of Brothers and he wouldn't exclude their characters if he was gerrymandering. He'd do the opposite.

I like demoncleaner's definition:

TV character in a drama or comedy series.

Wouldn't BoB and The Pacific be classed as dramas though?! Do you think those 'characters' should be allowed?

An Idiot Abroad would be classed as a comedy series in my eyes, should we accept Ricky Gervais?

See, thats my view with regard to Rome. It is highly fictionalised to the point where we really can't determine how accurate it is.

I can see the point with BoB and changed that though.

I don't get that at all. So you're saying that because a 'character' is based on a real person, portrayed by an actor, and has his lines written by a writer is invalid?

Edit: Added 'because'.

I suppose though that they are characters. Yes, based on real people, but BoB isn't a documentary series. Certain artisic choices would have been made by the writers, directors and the actor.

I also don't think it is a slight on the real people - just shows a level of appreciation about the performance.

When the real life persons had the level of input they did on the likes of BoB then yes I'd say they should be invalid. I can appreciate the actors performance but he's still acting out part of somebodys life and therefore can't be classed as a TV Show character.

I was going to vote, but these so called 'rules' are frankly laughable and prevent me from choosing my favourite characters. I'm not voting for the person, I'm voting for the character the actor is portraying on the TV show. I couldn't care less that there was a person with that name once. Aren't all characters influenced by real people?

Or Tony Blair, based on The Special Relationship etc.? I agree with Peppermint, stick to your original criteria. I dropped a few people off my list because the fiction line was fuzzy but there was no shortage of fictional characters to fill the spaces.

I'm sure your input will be sorely missed

I don't see what the problem is either. It's not hard to seperate fictional and non-fictional characters, and like Peppermint said we are hardly strapped for choice.

Okay enough is enough.

The rules are in the opening post.

To clarify:

Larry David and Will Smith are allowed

Non Fictional Characters from I, Claudius, Rome, Deadwood, Band Of Brothers and The Pacific are not.

If you can't keep your list within the qualifying criteria then please feel free to bypass this poll. If you want any characters eligibility clearing up then feel free to ask and I shall give you the answer.

Thanks

No worries. I have withdrawn my list. In all honesty there are characters which I simply wouldn't want to be not to be on my list if that makes sense, and I don't think we will agree on this criteria.

But hope it goes well! Will be interesting to see the results.

You've made a slight mistake with your list Rinc.

Number 1 should read Dexter Morgan...

And you really, really need to watch The West Wing.
