Very tough to get this down to 20. Surprised that I thought Omar wouldn't make anyone's list but mine. Looks like he's going to stand tall, yo. I also stuck with 1 character per TV show. Otherwise the wire might have a few too many.

1.)Homer Simpson (The Simpsons)
2.)Arnold Rimmer (Red Dwarf)
3.)Edmund Blackadder (Blackadder)
4.)Phillip J Fry (Futurama)
5.)Dr Who (Dr Who)
6.)Larry David (Curb your enthusiasm)
7.)George Costanza (Seinfeld)
8.)Alan Partridge (I'm Alan Partridge)
9.)David Brent (The office)
10.)Omar Little (The wire)
11.)Bazil Fawlty (Fawlty towers)
11.)Richard Sharpe (Sharpe)

17.)Al Calavicci (Quantum Leap)
18.)Eddie Elizabeth Hitler (Bottom)
19.)Malcolm Tucker (The thick of it)
20.)Dan Connor (Roseanne)

New top 30, you forced me to include McNaulty damn you.

I've just realised that because we can only have fictional characters it means pretty much everyone from Deadwood is excluded from the list

Unfortunately that's two characters. Can you choose one of them?

Al Swearengen (Deadwood) – 24 points
Julius Caesar (Rome) – 13 points
Captain Winters (Band of Brothers)

You didn't read my opening post did you?

These are all based on real people and can't be counted. I'll accept Titus Pullo though as even though he shares his name he is a fictional character.

Oh come on! Two of those guys are characters! We have little to no histroical record of them as people!

Winters I will concede.

You expect me to read these threads?

Also you should be banned on grounds of good taste if Daniel Jackson is going to appear.

Surely real or ficitonal, it comes down to acting choices and that is what makes these characters?

I mean, most of the cast of the Wire are based on real people, just with different names.

He's fictional so he's allowed, he's just 'based' on a real person. You could argue that a lot of fictional characters are actually based on real people.

Not totally. As far as BoB goes that is quite a factual account of events and involved the input of the veterans themselves. I wouldn't say there was much difference between Richard Winters and the character we saw Damien Lewis portray. It doesn't seem right to be able to have him in a TV Show character list. You have to draw the line somewhere and it's not like there's a lack of fictional characters out there.

Well can I keep Julius and Al?

Cause at best they are loose interpetations.

Well it is a bit of a stretch of call Dr. Daniel Jackson a "character". Yes, he had lines, and spoke them while standing on a set with cameras, but I'm not sure that strictly counts as a "character...."

I'm confident that this will change a great deal before the end.

1. Dr. Mark Greene (ER)
2. Fox Mulder (The X-Files)
3. Lance-Corporal Jack Jones (Dad's Army)
4. Hugo "Hurley" Reyes - (Lost}
5. Fozzie Bear - (The Muppet Show)
6. Dr. John Carter (ER)
7. Captain George Mainwaring (Dad's Army)
8. Basil Fawlty (Fawlty Towers)
9. Josiah Edward Bartlet - (The West Wing)
10. Victor Meldrew (One Foot In The Grave)

11. The Janitor (Scrubs)
12. Kara “Starbuck” Thrace - (Battleship Galactica)
13. Jack Bauer - (24)
14. Dana Scully (The X-Files)
15. Vic Mackay (The Shield)
16. Leo McGarry - (The West Wing)
17. Rowlf the Dog - (The Muppet Show)
18. Dr. Mark Craig - (St. Elsewhere)
19. Sgt. Michael "Mick" Belker - (Hill Street Blues)
20. Walter Skinner (The X-Files)

21. Dr. Gaius Baltar - (Battlestar Galactica)
22. Detective James McNulty - (The Wire)
23. Holland "Dutch" Wagenbach (The Shield)
24. Constable Benton Fraser - (Due South)
25. Charles Emerson Winchester III - (M*A*S*H)
26. William Adama - (Battleship Galactica)
27. Dr. Victor Ehrlich - (St. Elsewhere)
28. Sgt Phil Esterhaus - (Hill Street Blues)
29. Detective Raymond Vecchio - (Due South)
30. Colonel Sherman Tecumseh Potter - (M*A*S*H)

I eventually whittled it down to 32. The Wire's Bunk Moreland and Sgt. Wilson from Dad's Army had to go in the end. Had non-fictional characters been allowed there would be three folk from Deadwood in the list - Al Swearangen, Charlie Utter and Calamity Jane. I could have easily done a top 50, probably 100.

Yeah I thought that was a bit dodgy, but I couldn't choose between them as I see them as one character. No worries, just delete them and bump the following 4 choices up one.

Will Smith is allowed as he's a fictional version of Will Smith. Same as Larry David. They're fictional characters.

I thought I'd drawn a pretty obvious line of characters that are allowed and those that aren't

Has he not said that he's playing an exaggerated version of himself?

How does the rest of the World "draw the line".  TV character in a drama or comedy series.  That pretty much nails it - if drawing a line was actually the main concern.  I was compiling my list until I saw this.  A load of unsubstantiated gerrymandered balls if you ask me.

Which, I thoroughly concede, no one did.
