 The Empire Forums Top 100 TV Characters Of All Time

So, on the back of 'The Forum's Top 100 TV Shows 2010' comes your chance to vote for your favourite TV characters of all time! Who will make your list? Will the familiar faces of Homer Simpson or Del Boy make it to the top? Can fresh new faces such as Bill Compton or Quinn Fabray be able to make an impression? Have the old timers such as Basil Fawlty and The Fonz seen a decrease in popularity over the years? Here's a few things that could help:

1. You must vote for a top 30, top 20 or a top 10. It is up to you whether which of these you choose but be aware that the same points system applies to all so your number 1 will get 30pts. Top 10's (30-21pnts) Top 20's (30-11pnts) and Top 30's (30-1pnts). Here's a handy example of how to vote:

1. Al Bundy (30 Points)
2. Lily Savage (29 Points)
3. Ian Beale (28 Points)
4. Vera Duckworth (27 Points)
5. Lois Lane (26 Points)
6. Sideshow Bob (25 Points)
7. Sooty (24 Points)
8. Kermit The Frog (23 Points)
9. Buffy (22 Points)
10. Reggie Perrin (21 Points)
11. Lily Munster (20 Points)
12. Kenny (19 Points)
13. Cheetera (18 Points)
14. Malcolm Reynolds (17 Points)
15. David Brent (16 Points)
16. Mitch Buchannon (15 Points)
17. Bugs Bunny (14 Points)
18. Lt. Columbo (13 Points)
19. Brother Justin (12 Points)
20. Dennis Pennis (11 Points)


2. The votes will be counted by myself, elab49 and Rebenectomy

3.If anyone wishes to amend their list before the closing date please quote your original list and post your new one. That is vital as I count as you post and will not be going back to check on lists I have already counted. You can also PM your list to myself, elab49 or Rebenectomy if you don't want it to appear on this thread.

4. The current closing date is scheduled for the 31st Of December which gives people just over three months to get their votes in.

5. You must have a minimum of 5 posts in the forum to be able to vote.

6. Where possible please give the full name of the character (eg. Inspector Morse, Dr Niles Crane). If you are voting for character that could lead to that character being confused with another charcacter from a different show then please name the show as well (eg. Kenny from Southpark, Rigsby from Rising Damp)

7. Eligible characters can be human, animated, puppets and so forth. As long as the character is fictional then your votes will be counted. If there are any decisions to be made along the way regarding certain characters then they will be decided at the time. Real people such as Big Brother and X-Factor contestants will not be counted. Due to the constant division over Wrestlers these are also will not be counted. I have also made the decision not to include characters that portray the life of a real person (eg. Major Winters)

8. There are no rules limiting the amount of characters you can vote for from one particular show. If you want to vote for 20 Lost characters or 10 Star Trek characters then you are welcome to do so.

I hope that covers everything,

Updated:

Larry David and Will Smith are allowed

Non-Fictional Characters from I, Claudius, Deadwood, Rome, Band Of Brothers and The Pacific are not.

If you can't keep your list within the qualifying criteria then please feel free to bypass this poll. If you want any characters eligibility clearing up then feel free to ask and I shall give you the answer.

 Talk about complicated Erm...It's a toughie. I think he should be allowed because even though he's playing himself, it's a fictionalized version of himself so in essence it's still a character and not Larry David.

 What do you guys think about Wrestlers? The likes of Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock are undoubtedly great characters but should they be eligible? I'm torn on this one so some opinions will help please...

 I don't reckon, because even if you do class them as characters, doesn't it fall as sport before a tv show?

 That was my initial thought also, but then it could be argued that it's more entertainment than sport. Still, for the purpose of this poll I'm deeming Wrestlers ineligible due to the uncertainty and the fact that there's plenty of other TV characters that can be chosen instead.

That kind of wrestling doesn't remotely equate to a sport - it's an entertainment soap! Hulk Hogan plays that character in everything he does, more or less.

I'll try a list - as my favourites tend to be normal TV characters in normal TV shows I don't think I'll have too many eligibility problems

If you do that then the poll won't be as reflective of peoples favourite characters as it should be. Characters you would normally have voted for may be lower in the standings than they should be and vice versa for the ones you do vote for. If everybody did this then we wouldn't get a true record.

I'd ditto Reb and volunteer to help with the counting if that was part of the decision on the number of characters. Although I'm happy to wield the axe (or possibly the random pick from a bag holding the names) to get to 20!

I think a Top 50 would be a little too many, I'm happy to allow extensions to 30 though. So you can have list of either 10, 20 or 30 characters. Everything has an order, it might be tough but you've got to draw the line somewhere.
