It's now official that it's all been a hoax. Affleck has gone public, after months of rebuttals, right up until a couple of days ago.

Two years of method acting being a drug-addled rapper, all for a mockumentary? Maybe Phoenix really is losing the plot.

Great great film. Very funny and surprisingly convincing. I'll admit I got "punked" but only because Phoenix's performance was so utterly brilliant all around.

Tbh it deserves a better release than this. Its not showing ANYWHERE!

I had heard that this was a hoax before I saw it. However, so convincing was Phoenix's performance, as the film wore on I presumed that Affleck's announcement was to spare his subject's blushes to some degree, and it wasn't until the credits rolled that I realised I had just experienced a very elaborate work of performance art.

Phoenix has always delivered truly dedicated performances but some would argue this is his most committed - pretending for two years that he was an objectionable bum who eschewed the acting profession to become a not very good rapper. And of course the media bought it all hook, line and sinker, which is the whole point of this exercise. Yes, we do spend too much time fawning over celebrities and this film demonstrates this with a caustic sense of humour. Trouble is, Phoenix is so good at playing awful that it's not that much fun spending so much time with this shuffling (and presumably rather smelly) version of him.
