To be honest they were going to push it through no matter what. The fact that they have quite blatantly made up miracles to justify it however is another thing entirely.

So John-Paul is going to become a saint.

Does this mean he's going to spend eternity in the afterlife spying on criminals while quaffing champagne and tapping up dolly-birds on yachts? Jammy cunt.

Personally I though it would be better to skip over the whole two miracle bit and just make him a saint rather than downgrade what a miracle actually is. Shouldn't a miracle be something he actually did rather than some random bit of good luck that happened to one of his millions of followers. Still, thier house thier rules I guess...

Says it all really. "I mean if you're gay you're still a sinful human being, but who am I to judge?"
"We need greater roles for women within the church. Priests? Fuck off, are you mad?"

But this will still be seen by some as progression, and people get to say "look how modern they're being". Joke.

Ah, reminds me of St Thomas Aquinas and the amazing Miracle of the Herrings. For those unfamiliar with the tale, it goes somethign like this. While on his deathbed, Aquinas asked for a plate of herrings, his favourite boyhood meal. However, herrings weren't available because he no longer lived in Northern Europe but instead enjoyed the sunnier Mediterranean climes, so they gave him a plate of sardines instead. When they asked him how his meal was, he declared them to be the best herring he had ever tasted. A miracle!! God changed the sardines into herring!! And not, ya know, the crazed ramblings of a demented old man....Still, it was the miracle needed to get his canonisation green-lit.

It's not a change at all so I'm not really sure of all the fuss. It's in the catechism so it shouldn't surprise anyone whos read it. I think it's fair to say we're still a long way from gay marriages being performed in church folks.

Wasn't sure whether to open a separate thread for this or not, but it's here for now...

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/3000-year-old-inscription-%E2%80%9Cproves-bible%E2%80%99s-history-is-true%E2%80%9D--archaeologist-says-113341789.html#28BpOxX

Yes, I know it's a Yahoo article, but even that suspicious epithet did not prepare me for the complete idiocy on display.

It really does beggar belief.

Just don't go near the comments if you do read it. I see some of the standard Yahoo neanderthal (no insult meant to neanderthal) anti-semites/take your pick of other forms of racism commenters are making an appearance there.

Too late!

I'm not sure they'll get away with it - haven't other areas of the US failed to shield cash from abuse victims when its gone to higher courts? It seems to be a process rather than final.

I'm not familiar with any other cases like this to be honest. I just find it incredible that despite everything that's happened, the hurt and shame of the victims and their families; the lies and coverups; the complicity of the highest members of the clergy; the supposedly sincere apologies and "we've learned our lessons", they're STILL prepared to do something as devious and shameful as this. It just baffles me beyond comprehension. If they were a multinational selling a product, they would have been boycotted into liquidation by now.

It's been ongoing in the US for ages - trying to protect assets from claimants. And also make sure they were at a distance from the Vatican - some dioceses have gone into bankruptcy leading to the logical question of how they can when the Church is still the Catholic (ie universal!) church and therefore a single entity and, more importantly, there's a paper trail to the Vatican regarding how abusers should be treated.

Quite a few have paid out hundreds of millions though.

Now this is bad. Really, really bad. Refusing to teach or recognise science that conflicts with your faith is bad enough, but to take that to a step that means your students lose marks in their exam is diabolical.

And if this had happened in a state funded school for Muslims all hell would have broken loose in the media.

I'd like to think that if it had happened in a state-funded school regardless of religious persuasion all hell would break loose

Someone makes a good point in the comments below that article - if any other non-religious organisation had such a huge amount of members who'd been raping children over such a long period of time it would have been shut down years ago, especially if the leaders of said organisation had also spent years covering up or ignoring the aforementioned raping of children and this organisation also happened to promote bigotry, discrimination and encouraging people to hate themselves.
You'd almost think it was a business or something...

How anyone can look to the Catholic Church for any sort of moral guidance when they are so morally corrupt is beyond me.

I think more practising Catholics look inwards towards their faith rather than look to the Church as an institution. Whilst the current Pope would appear to be quite progressive in a lot of ways, the damage done already may never be reversed.

It certainly won't be reversed all the while church officials continue to operate in a manner that suggests nothing but contempt for any source of law or authority outside their own. I've spoken a lot about the Catholic Church on these pages as it's a topic that gets me so angry, and seemingly every week that goes by there's something else that brings up my blood pressure. The UN requests (not orders, but requests) that the Vatican make their documents on abusers public and hand over those who are guilty to face the law, and they're more concerned about having their policies on homosexuality and abortion criticised. They are nothing but a disgusting, disgraceful organisation that I sincerely hope one day the world's catholic population will see through and find the decency to condemn.
