Saying that, I feel like I should be more bothered by this than I am. Like Dev says it's a huge deal, I'm just a bit "Meh" about the whole thing.

Yeah, I don't actually care although I did think about it and decided that I couldn't be arsed. I'm sure if I was a religious person it would be a big deal, though.

I dunno; my folks are devout Catholics and they don't seem that arsed. Probably just thinking about who'll be next.

They could make a show out of it. 'Pope Idol'.

Yeah, okay, sorry ... dreadful.

Interesting. Maybe it's not that big a deal then.

And yes, bad joke but never be afraid to make them! It wouldn't be the same around here without 'em

It's not just a big religious deal, it's a cultural deal, it is not usual at all for a Pope to resign and usually he stays there till death unless there is not something huge. This is not a mere occurence, this is a historical case unfolding.

Obviously the stress of living in opulence, being driven everywhere and queer bashing was getting too much for him.

I assume his days will be filled with doing Codewords and watching Countdown between naps. If my father's retirement is anything to go by, anyway.

Well, he could probably do with a good wank.

I'm a catholic and I have to say I'm not fussed. I raised an eyebrow and I thought it was a till death deal but thats about it. I think I'm supposed to be but can't say I'm bothered never thought he was good choice. I'm hoping they'll go for someone more progressive (I know its the Vatican but I can hope!). Be interesting to see who gets the gig but I've never been much of a Pope watcher so not sure how much I'll really be bothered once it's all done. Be nice if we could get a head of church that we could be less ashamed of though.

I was raised a Catholic and I wholly concur with this. I wish the Church would drop its 12th century doctrines and rampant prejudices and realise that the world has changed radically. There is far too much focus on the technicalities of an ancient and redundant bible text, and not enough attention paid to the ethos Jesus preached: love one another regardless.

Say what you want about ex-Pope BendyDick, he didn't fuck around when it came to Lent

Were you watching Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe tonight? He made a very similar comment about him "giving up poping for Lent".

Yes exactly! In my church they've been giving out postcards to send to our local MP to protest gay marriage "cringe". Its time for radical change or its doom for them I fear.

Cardinal Roger Mahoney, implicit in covering up child abuse by priests in the 80's, showing some of that good ol' Christian love and forgiveness:

"In the past several days, I have experienced many examples of being humiliated. In recent days, I have been confronted in various places by very unhappy people. I could understand the depth of their anger and outrage--at me, at the Church, at about injustices that swirl around us.
Thanks to God's special grace, I simply stood there, asking God to bless and forgive them. "

How decent of him. One of many reasons why I utterly loathe the Catholic church.

Mind you, I don't envy the choice they have to make in The Pope Factor now Sir Jimmy isn't a viable option...

Apparentky the Pope was "dismayed'' at the belief that the church had been infiltrated by a lobby group for homosexuals. Fucking 5th Century shit, right there.

This is silly.

The BBC have got a live 'Smoke Watch' feed. Lots of jokes around about when the smoke appears it's because the cardinals are burning evidence.
