 It's not just a big religious deal, it's a cultural deal, it is not usual at all for a Pope to resign and usually he stays there till death unless there is not something huge. This is not a mere occurence, this is a historical case unfolding.

I'm a catholic and I have to say I'm not fussed. I raised an eyebrow and I thought it was a till death deal but thats about it. I think I'm supposed to be but can't say I'm bothered never thought he was good choice. I'm hoping they'll go for someone more progressive (I know its the Vatican but I can hope!). Be interesting to see who gets the gig but I've never been much of a Pope watcher so not sure how much I'll really be bothered once it's all done. Be nice if we could get a head of church that we could be less ashamed of though.

I was raised a Catholic and I wholly concur with this. I wish the Church would drop its 12th century doctrines and rampant prejudices and realise that the world has changed radically. There is far too much focus on the technicalities of an ancient and redundant bible text, and not enough attention paid to the ethos Jesus preached: love one another regardless.

Yes exactly! In my church they've been giving out postcards to send to our local MP to protest gay marriage "cringe". Its time for radical change or its doom for them I fear.
