It's a brilliant album, but harrowing with it.





Been meaning to get this for about 6 months now - that's about as good a recommendation as I need.

 Well this seems like the perfect time of year to ressurect this thread, especially as I've been revisiting and gorging on the Two Melancholy Marks (Eitzel and Kozelek, don't you know) for the last couple of days.
Anyway, I bought April by Sun Kil Moon when it came out in 2008 but for some reason (despite being a huge fan of their other albums, Red House Painters, and MK in general) barely listened to it more than once. Just happened to randomly pick it off the shelf yesterday and it's never left my CD player since. Christ, it's good. So I'd like to add Moorestown as I'm fairly certain it's the saddest song I've ever heard. But in a brilliant way, obviously.

Funny you should bring this thread back up. I was sitting listening to the radio last night (Planet Rock or Radio Paradise not sure which) when Johnny Cash's version of NIN's Hurt came on. What a song.
It put me in a NIN mood, which with my frame of mind at the moment is not good, but despite being bleak, also gives me immense mental strength.

Some lovely choices in there - the Mansun, NIN, Joy Divison and Tho Yorke tracks are weirdly enough my favourites by those particular grumpy-pants artists.
Though much as I love that Mogwai track, I reckon the saddest song they've ever done is Take Me Somehere Nice, from the criminally un-loved Rock Action album.

The Nine Inch Nails version of Hurt is an excellent bleak song.It really gets me how utterly crushed Trent Reznor sounds in that song's opening. The Downward Spiral and A Warm Place are great too.

Also, Radiohead's Pyramid Song, You And Whose Army? and How to Disappear Completely. All very bleak, but all still beautiful songs.

Warm Place is my favourite. Very bleak, but also strangely soothing, almost comforting.
