Along with The Muppets, the Dominic Cooper Pint Of Milk was my absolute highlight of the weekend. Had a great time, and the audience questions were just as barmy as the real ones. Pint Of Milk interviews normally take around 20-30 minutes for the mag, so you know.

To the person who asked about my phone, I don't want a clipboard, and that phone is invaluable for a) keeping track of the time and b) having last-minute notes on there. Couldn't do Big Screen without it. There's just too much stuff to remember without it, and we don't have an autocue.

That was me about the phone....

Modern technology eh?! Whats wrong with chalk and slate....?

How about a fruit branded tablet device for next year then - less scrolling involved!

By the way - and Chris knows about this so I'm not cheating, doing something illegal or anything (I think? If it is please tell me!) - but I filmed the WHOLE 35min of a pint of Milk with Dominic Cooper, from the front row, which was pretty fabulous and definitely one of the highlights of the week end, I'll export it tonight when I go home and post a link here for everyone who missed it. It's pretty clean HD except when I asked a question and lost my camera balance for a minute ahaha :D

Oh - one last thing - be good if Big Screen could work with O2 next year in that if u have a Big Screen ticket you can get some money off in the restaurants

Fairly sure they already did that......

.....Water Margin (That's right Chris, I played gastric russian roulette and won!!) gave me about 4 quid off when I showed them my wrist-band.

Obviously not everywhere did

The Diamond Sessions
As I've said having not attended MC My only expectations came fro the BS website and the forum, and I have to say I was expecting much more interaction and many more guests. Felt really let down. I do appreciate Chris that guests can only attend dependant on work demands and that this event is still in growth stage, but do feel you over promised and under delivered. In my opinion having experienced both types of pass the Standard ticket to me provided greater value, having attended four great sessions on the Friday.

Goodies
I too was a little disappointed by the lack of freebies / goodie bags for newbies, although often full of tat, little things like this make you feel welcome and valued.

As a newbie, I really agree on both points. I already commented on the Diamond sessions, regarding the lack of goodie bags, I was surprised to read after the event that you could get one for £2. Where / how was never announced... I attended FrightFest in Leicester Square a couple years back and all pass holders were given a great goodie bag with DVDs, T-shirts, mouse pads, etc.

Also, we were promised there would be lots of opportunities for autographs as Diamond ticket holders. But the autograph station in Studio City was always empty...

Well, I enjoyed it but I was one of those annoying pricks with a VIP pass doing press things and queue jumping... however I didn't get to see any screenings because of work stuff.

However I did meet Chris, Dan, Helen, Ian and a bunch of the Empire guys and they were lovely.

How the hell did you manage to Queue jump?  They told press (inc me) that you had to queue like everyone else? and in many cases they let press in last?...

BACK TO MY LIST!
  • ..OH yeah and the indigo screen had poor sound. Voices coming out the centre front speaker and everything else coming out the side speakers.  Didn't work so well!

Ah queue jump is a bit of an exaggeration actually, but there was a press entrance to the Indigo. Also, it could be just because I was already in the Cineworld cinema that I was already in certain screens before punters were allowed in.

A few of you will know I was making a list over the weekend of all the footage and panels we saw in the Indigo2 / Superscreen and now I've managed to decipher my handwriting (I was writing in the dark!) I have put all the info into a spreadsheet. It's been at least a week since I created one and I was getting withdrawal symptoms.

You can find the link in my sig below.

Awesome work ! Now I can begin planning my next 12 months of cinema activity...

As I keep mentioning I was there on the Friday only and the only freebies I managed to sniff out was the sony spiderman t-shirt in return for my email address. A poster which when I asked what it was - found it was the smurfs and then politely declined... and a pirates badge...which I also politely declined!

We had loads of T-shirts made for the event, with 'How Much Is A Pint Of Milk?' on the front. They got nicked on Thursday night.

Here another newbies take on this weekends Big Screen.

Overall had a pretty good day on Saturday, but several things let it down.  Pretty much all of the downsides have been covererd already as they mainly concern the organisation of the whole thing which at times was a complete shambles.

We arrived at 8.15 as we'd received the email stating that it was a strict 9.00am entry.  We didnt mind queueing for a while but were then told that ALL Diamond tickets holders should queue on the right, but as we got to to the front we noticed that this lead into the Indigo, and we had Superscreen tickets. I asked one of the staff as she passed by and she said we should be queueing up the top of the escalator!

Once we got in the Superscreen our seats were in Row B but right against the wall.  It was nice to be able to see the talent, but it was almost impossible to see the 3D footage properly.  As the screen was only about half full we moved after the first session to some centre seats about five rows back.

I did appreciate the talent we did get to see, even if it was for films Im not particualry interested in (Twilight, Kill List), so it was good to see Guy Ritchie, Roland Emmerich (even if his clips of Anonymous seemed to go on forever), Mark Strong, Peter Lord from Aardman, the Troll Hunter guys, and a few others.  But we definitley felt like second class citizens in the Superscreen.  We may have had the more comfortable seats, and Ian did a pretty good job, but there was a real lack of atmosphere with so many empty seats.

As everything overran by the time it came to lunch we had about 25 mins instead of the expected 45, and from then on everything just ran late, so when we finally came out of the ILM presentation at about 5.50, we decided to take some time out by walking down to the Studio City area to have a look around all the exhibits, except that when we got down there it was closing and they wouldnt let us in!  As I was only there for the one day I was pretty gutted by this especially as Joe Public who hadnt paid a penny could just walk in and get all the freebies that I thought us Diamond ticket holders would get.

So, some of the previews were good, the Raiders and ILM panels were fun, but I definitely felt like this was overpriced at £65 a ticket

I'll probably return next year, but Empire really need to look at the way it was set out at the 02, surely it would have been better for everybody to have been in the Superscreen, with so many empty seats Im sure all the Indigo people could have fitted in there as well.

God no.

I was there to update Cineworld's Twitter and Facebook feeds with newsbites and little info nuggets, so I was mostly perched up somewhere with my netbook... though I did enjoy the Anonymous and Real Steel presentations (Levy answered my question!), the Attack the Block and Gareth Edwards Q&As and most of the Alien panel (but had to leave to get to the Jason Momoa press photo op - which was a nightmare).

Oh yeah, and I saw most of the Harry Potter display.

But yeah, I didn't get to see any of the screenings. Work first people. Work first.

Hey you know what? I was sitting approximately 5 meters away from Chris so if he didn't want me to record this, I'm sure he would have made it very clear. Also, my arm was against my body and not above me, as I was FRONT FUCKIN ROW and the camera was in NO ONE'S FACE and very discreet. Many people filmed interviews and stuff that DIDNT HAVE EXCLUSIVE STUFF, so I thought it would be a nice thing to film it and share it later on for the many who couldn't make it. Just like people do at Comic Con and no one really MINDS.
I never film or take picture during concerts, thank you very much, do NOT patronize me.

I recorded the entire 2000AD Session - my brother is a huge fan and couldn't make it (he lives in Oz).  I spoke to the guys afterwards and asked if they minded, they said they didn't and then they went on to sign my copy of Empire (with Judge D on the cover) and put special messages to my brother for his birthday coming up...   I think the no filming only applied to the exclusive sessions and they really made it clear when you had to have your camera put away...

Sorry this is going to be a long post, so you might want to skip to the end...

First off: Many, many, many thanks to everyone on here, especially Helen and Stunt-Helen, for just being here during "ticketing hell". Wasn't a forum user here before, and sadly never made earlier Movie Cons, if it hadn't been for this forum I would have just given up and cancelled my tickets (I came very close).

Second: well done and thanks to Empire and the Empire Staff for putting this on. I appreciate it's the first attempt to something like this, and the fact that you've been around through this all on the forum, and are looking for feedback is great.

Third: It was great meeting and talking to people in the sessions and queues, and meeting a few of you "vets" briefly - a shame that the ridiculous Diamond session timekeeping didn't allow me to get out more. I seemed to be forever rushing between the newsagents / queues. I don't know enough to put names to faces I'm afraid (except Teffh and Mrs Teffh and Beebs who I think it was next to me?) but if you saw and/or spoke to then HI!, you'll remeber me I'm pretty much unmissable - I was the fat bloke moaning about the queues all the time wearing a T-Shirt that said on the back "forever searching for Totoro" (and frankly, who isn't?) and "R3 Survivor" on the front. Someone suggested that next year's T-shirts should be "Empire Presents BIG QUEUES!" - put me down for that ;)

General thoughts...

The Diamond session footage was a bit hit-and-miss, I appreciate the studios that at least send a real person to introduce the stuff, even if was a marketing droid, over those who couldn't be arsed. Yes ICON I'm talking about you - is Drive the only film you are releasing this year? Because that's all we saw. All the live panels were great, even if it wasn't stuff that was interesting to me, they were good to be there for. Special mention for Real Steal here - I had no interest in this at all before, now I will keep an eye out for it.

The Highlight by far was The Muppets session. I'm another who shed a tear in Kermit's song. Only wish it could have been longer. Or that we had Amy Adams in person there ;)

Films wise... Cowboys & Aliens I enjoyed, really fun. Rise of the Apes was great. Crazy, Stupid, Love was brilliant, and it was brilliant being in that audience for that one. The Help was excellent (aside from the timing issue). The Debt (Secret Screening)... competent thriller but nothing special.

The Exhibition area... didn't really get much time down there... as someone said before, why did it close at 6pm, there was not enough time before 6pm for Diamond holders to look around? Also, the goody bags for subscribers (for £2) didn't seem to be advertised anywhere - I only knew because I asked someone else who had one!

The bad...

SEE Tickets: 'nuff said.

King's Row: I don't think I got value for money by paying out over and above a standard Diamond. The indigo2 just isn't the right place for cinema (I'll add my vote to those for having all Diamond sessions in a PROPER CINEMA next time). It was probably great if you were in the middle section, but if you paid the extra and got a seat in the wings, it was a bit of a rip-off. For the extra I paid, I did not expect to get a seat at the side with a sharp angle to the screen, and with my view of the screen and the stage obstructed by glass panels, metal bars and wire. And only allowing access to the King's Row by a single small elevator was mad - we didn't get to see the start of the last session because they were still letting us in!

Timekeeping: lousy. I appreciate that some late starts were because of queuing / other sessions running late, but in general it was poor. I still can't work out how the Saturday morning diamond session overran by nearly a whole hour? I don't think there was enough time planned between showings to get everybody out then in again. Finally - try using IMDB / Wikipedia or the BBFC to look up running times for the films you're showing. Yes I'm moaning about The Help again (sorry) - there was barely enough time to get out as soon as the credits started and into the Secret Screening yesterday despite the schedule showing a 45 minute gap!

Diamond Morning/Afternoon split. I don't think this worked at all well. I think the better plan would have been to just have 3 one hour sessions, with 15 minute breaks between - thereby ending the Diamonds around 13:30 and removing the need to queue up again to get back in after lunch.

Queues: Given it's The O2, and the O2 / Clarion / Cineworld staff do this all the time, what went wrong? None of the staff seemed to have a clue what was going on half the time - or which queue was which. We also repeatedly had the stupidity of being let out from the queue and up the escalators, only to then have to queue again for several minutes in the hot and stuffy corridors by the screens. Why not just hold everyone downstairs until the screen was ready?

Outdoor Queuing: Just plain moronic. I was in the Friday Red State queue and they were perfectly prepared to let us stand in the rain (until someone kicked up a fuss). They're just lucky it didn't rain more - in case none of the staff seemed to have noticed: there's a GREAT BIG DOME ROOF over everything in The O2, so people generally wouldn't think of bringing a coat or umbrella. There was loads of space round the corner where the Delorean was, why not use that?

Yep, said it would be long. Sorry! I know a lot of this has been said before, and comes of as a bit of a whinge, but I hope it helps to make BS2/MC5 much better, whenever/whereever that is.

IN SUMMARY...

EMPIRE: 5/5
FORUMITES & ATTENDEES: 6/5 ;)
FILMS AND SESSIONS: 4/5
GENERAL ORGANISATION: 2/5
KERMIT: infinity/5
SEE TICKETS: a bunch of mindless cretins who will be first against the wall when the revolution comes.

Finally, Chris BIG SCREEN! Hewitt was great as host for the indigo2, but would have liked to have seen more of the rest of the Empire crew. We were severly under-Helen'd in there (*insert astounded cat from Puss in Boots look here*)

As much as I appreciate everybody here, I think the general feeling I now get is that I wasn't welcome as somebody who hasn't attended Movie-Con I/II/III. It feels like you guys were expecting the same feel/treatment like last year and were disappointed it was now for the masses and therefor less special for you guys. It might be cos there's a small percentage of people on here, but I think you should adjust your outlook and look at the amazing event Empire put out for a lot of people.
I also want the in-jokes, the Q&A's etc, but you forumites got a goodie bag through Helen. The rest didn't.

And I think a lot of people didn't look at the passes round people's neck: There were PRESS/VIP/GUEST/STAFF/PHOTO passes. So please don't call everybody with a pass round their neck Press, because on sunday the studio's themselves handed out those passes to their own guests (including those kids). And press did have to queue up for all the showcases like the rest. The panels in the afternoon we had a difference entrance for but there were no seat assignments for those, now were they? And when it comes to footage, the only studio who had nothing new/special was Universal. I thought the Momentum guy was a little overenthousiastic, but he brought some great footage and it would've been boring if we only had the US major studios on stage right?

All and all, I had a really fun time and cut the guys some slack. I was surprised Chris managed to be on stage on time for every showcase with the maze that is the O2 ;)

Despite the bad organisation and location of the event EMpire Big Screen was the first film event I had ever been to and I loved it..it was a fantastic weekend with a great atmosphere and it was fun talking to fellow film lovers who were all so lovely...even though there were not that many it was great seeing all the actors and directors there talk about their films...the morning stuff was good fun and the footage seemed endless....i am now way too excited for films like Total Recall and SPiderman...Chris was also a funny and entertaining host and i came home with a spot prize along with other freebies i got...studio city was good fun and the sessions with the exception of the secret screening of drive which i walked out of were fantastic... Loved Cowboys and ALiens, Rise of the planet of the apes and even 30 Minutes or less was good...but Warrior was the best film of the weekend and one of the best of the year...The Muppets interview was hilarious and harry potter was good fun...the disney showcase was the best along with sony...i was surprised by how funny puss in boots was...all in all a fantastic weekend and if i can and i will be trying very hard I will come next September (thats apparently when they are holding it next year due to the olympics) for more film fun...and hopefully i will be going as much as i can in the future :)

Going to sound odd but as a smoker I understand your point. I'm very conscious about the fact that people who don't smoke can be bothered by it some times (me and my mate had a couple of disagreements after venue staff said we could smoke in the queue and I really didn't want to). I mean, outside a bar is a given (I think people can walk through the smokers to get to a smoke free bar as a bit of a compromise) but not when they have to stand in a queue for a while.

So much to go through, so little time

HUGE HUGE thank you to Chris Hewitt, my new favourite person, his hosting was fantastic and actually at points made me want the clips to be finished so we could have more Chris! Plus it was great to see him pop up loads, I spotted him a million times over the weekend, I will endevour to get a picture next year with him, without turning into Odddaze

The footage we saw was amazing, so chuffed by it all (even if Fox and Universal on Day 1 was mainly just ok), the Boulevard bit was overwhelming with it's awesomeness, so many cool booths for trailers and goodies and cool stuff, I had no problem with this... I kinda was overwhelmed and awe inspired when I first got to this bit, so many photos! As for the Delorean, geek mind blown! (My friend who I was with almost fainted when he realised there was a Delorean)... the star appearances weren't as good as say RDJ who I know has been before, but there were some great ones still (gutted I didn't see Dom Cooper, who I love, but I didn't get in on his sessions due to booking straight away when schedules appeared first) including Roland Emmerich (yes I like Godzilla 1998!) Guy Ritchie, Idris Elba, Peter Lord, even David Tennant's blink and you'll miss it cameo and the back of Jason Mamoa's head as he descended the Cineworld staircase! Ooh and Warwick Davis, my friend really wanted to ask him for a photo but decided not to harass him

So yeah, loved every second of the weekend bar the obvious downsides, here's my good bits and bad bits:

GOOD-
- The exclusive footage, seeing cool new stuff from Total Recall (shocked they had that!), Lizard in Spiderman (even if he looked like a Goomba from the Mario film), Final Destination Five (hilarious!), Puss in Boots (best thing of the whole weekend), Tintin (looking good, but where's Daniel Craig in all this, thought he had a big role?), John Carter (looks fantastic), and the Pirates, not exclusive but looks hilariously fantastic!
- Seeing some cool stars: Warwick Davis (just seen around about, rather than in a panel), Tennant, Idris Elba, Roland Emmerich, Shawn Levy, Guy Ritchie, Arthur from Merlin (enjoy that show so was cool, and he was very witty), Mark Gatiss, Peter Lord, and some other guys
- Muppets was awesome, nuff said! Can't wait!
- The animals was so cute, and good to see the lovely Helen on stage, good thing there were no Penguins as much as I wanted there to be after Mr Popper!
- Kim's Horror Quiz was superb, some great questions and I surprised myself with how well I thought I did, got a good few wrong of course, but was really good, a highlight of the extra stuff!
- The films were all pretty good: Cowboys and Aliens/ Fright Night I absolutely loved, Change Up and 30 Minutes or Less were both very good too
- The boulevard section of course, too much amazing stuff to go into! And bought some lovely American drinks and sweets woop!
- Chris Hewitt, greatest guy in history!

Bad-
- The queing as already mentioned, everything started late and the 02 staff hadn't a clue
- Started Kim's Quiz 15 minutes late, as the 02 staff on the queues said there wasn't a queue for it, then told us to wait, all while looking at tickets and wondering what the heck it was we were going into... it had started and people were quizzing so how they got in is anyone's clue?
- Paying £2 for a goodie bag, though now I realise as a subscriber I was pretty lucky... I had assumed that goodie bags would be a fun freebie though
- The ticketing system worked out ok in the end, only because tickets can on Thursday before I left though... this needs sorting out next time, almost had a panic attack!
- Not enough Tennant, and where was Mr Downey this year?
- Paranormal Activity 3, Devil Inside and Don't be Afraid of the Dark, not because they look bad, just because I'm a wuss! In fact DBAOTD looks fantastic, but too scary
- More snacking places needed, had some amazing restaurants but would have loved to grab a quick bite rather than settle into a restaurant... food on the move! More an 02 problem I guess, but a few more stands for a quick burger or Hot Dog would make things go quicker dinner wise (tried to get a HD for Fright Night but they'd run out after I queued for 15 minutes and was almost late!)

I have no major gripes though, I absolutely loved the weekend immensly... it was exhilirating and different to be out in London, and the walk past the river down to the 02 every morning was a highlight of the year, utterly beautiful scenery on the Thames! I'm betting it'll be even more awesome next year!

Also would have loved to see some of the cool forumites, but being with a friend didn't want to leave him feeling left out if I came over and started chinwagging... but I know what some of you look like now from your antics near the stage Four for Forum!

BRING ON BIG SCREEN RELOADED!

Once you don't include any of the stuff to do with SEE, overall the weekend was a positive one. Sure, the atmosphere wasn't as good as last year and some of the content was missing the awesome factor, but I think the forumites made up for most of that. Highlights for me was the Reel Steel panel and Fright Night which I really enjoyed.

For next year I think we should return to the old format, just in a larger venue then the BFI like the Cineworld Superscreen or the Empire in Leicester Square. For me, the multiple overlapping sessions, the waiting around and the constant queuing didn't work. Though parts of Hollywood Boulevard were fun such as the free photos, a lot of it was rather dull. A stand just showing the trailer on a constant loop seemed sort of pointless really.

So, a good effort, but must try harder next year.

Idea for next year, get IGN to have a stage, and the guy from Chalet Girl should MC it, totally made Kapow worth going for between elongated queues, who's to say it wouldn't work for Big Screen? Just need to entice them to partake.

Only had time to read a few comments today so far but, blimey, dont people like to moan.

Nothing is ever going to be perfect, I used to help run The BBC British Short Film Festival (dont worry, no one else has ever heard of it either) which took over 2 West End cinemas for a weekend and these things are a logistical nightmare. You cant rehearse the interviews or the footage which often comes in on many different formats etc. You cant blame the regular cinema staff as even on the years busyiest weekend cant even compare to an event such as Big Screen.

However I will say Disney/Pixar should be ashamed of themselves as on the Friday the print of 'Toy Story' didnt turn up and 'Monsters Inc' was so damaged it was unplayable, I saw a lot of upset kids and angry parents. Also it was just the teaser trailer from 'Brave' and not any footage as promised in the advertising!!!

However I had a FANTASTIC weekend. Even if I hadnt had won an Ipod Touch in Fridays 'Smack My Pitch Up' (didnt even realise there was a prize) , the weekend was everything I hoped it would be. 100% honest.

The highlight was The Muppets, closly followed by Harry Potter, Terry Gilliam (not even a quarter full, outragous) and The Raiders Of The Lost Ark panel. Ok, there was only the producer there from 'Raiders' but I felt that made it better as he could go into much more detail than if there had been 4 people on the panel, what an amazing life he had.

The Indigo2 stuff was great, ok so no Hollywood A-lister turned up (not even Simon Pegg) but I still loved every minute of it (apart from the Shakespeare film footage which part of my is still watching).

The bad points I wont go into and were kind of my fault. You get out what you put in.

Saving up my pennies for the next Big Screen/Movie-Con, cant wait

I just realised, we had footage from a film saying Shakespeare didn't write a thing, we had a film set in modern day using Will's words, why not fotage from a film set in modern day, but about Shakespeare? Like, ya know, if he fell through a time hole of some description?
I want to see footage of a film like that, get on it studios.

I think the problem with Terry Gilliam was that it was added with very little notice, and was scheduled against 3 big film previews (Conan, The Guard, The Help) which we all booked for ages ago. I would have loved to have gone, if it had been at another time.

How about a film about Shakespeare going back in time to battle dinosaurs...
