I started reading the thread from the start but had to give up. The Expendables comparison still boggles my fucking brain.

Yeah, my brain melted. Basically a lot of the subtext was "I don't get it! Therefore it must be shit!"

The Expendables? That's like comparing Time Bandits and Commando it just doesn't make sense .

I'm glad I only tended to post in Joypad and Grandstand back then, had I read this at the time then me and this place would be done professionally.

A fun, quirky film, with a very clever central idea: when you meet someone who has a string of failed relationships, your awesomeness must be awesome enough to overcome their feelings about getting into a new relationship as a result of their feelings about their exes. You spark off memories of their exes, and if they fall in love with you it's because one by one, you have 'defeated' their exes. This is the process of meeting/falling for someone depicted with more wit and knowledge of people than the usual fluffy shit.

Converting that process into actual combat scenes is genius.

I finally got around to watching this the other week, having bought it cheap in the sales. Pretty good fun - I've read the first installment of the books (never got round to buying the rest...yet) so had a pretty good idea of what to expect, fairly hip, funny, video game-style fun.

I think a lot of criticism came from the "so hip it aches" style, and it that sort of thing hacks you off then it's well advised to steer clear of it, but if you can let that slide, it's a couple of hours of good, solid entertainment.

I was really looking forward to this and then the trailer and review only fueled my excitement. But at the end of the day this wasn't funny at all, and Cera who I usually find quite charming was very annoying. To call this film a Classic is an insult to other films that have received 5 stars. Stick to your Zom-coms wright!

Expertly paced, incredibly smart, and just all-out fun, Edgar Wright's adaption awakens the teenager in all of us with it's touching and kinetic story and lovable characters. An instant cult classic.

Watched this on Channel 4 last night. Overall it was a fun film. I loved the style and direction of the film, and I liked most of the characters. However, I disliked the main two characters which was the fault of the script and partly the acting too.

3/5

I still think the best things are Chris Evans and Brandon Routh. with different casting of the leads (ie two actors with some form of chemistry and definitely a different Scott Pilgrim) this could have been more than the average film we ended up seeing.

Have this on blu-ray but still watched it on TV last night. Still one of my favourite films. Characters, tone, style, action, jokes, everything was perfect.

Essentially it is Marmite. If you like it you like it otherwise not so much. In my opinion it hinges on the chemistry and the relationship between the two leads which in my personal view it lacks. Others may see it differently

I watched it for a bit but I really didn't get into it. So I switched off and started watching Peter Ustinov interviews on Youtube.

I re-read much of the thread yesterday, and can only agree. My own contributions weren't my finest, have to say. Am disappointed that I fell into the following traps:

- Criticising a film I hadn't seen.
- Suggesting that Empire had given preferential treatment to Edgar Wright because he seemed to have, for want of a better phrase, a favourable working relationship with the magazine, and certain writers in particular.
- Connected to the above point, getting involved in ridiculous discussions where somehow, a film's star rating was directly connected with the amounts of coverage / advertising it had received in the magazine prior to release.

All twaddle! Even after seeing SPVTW, I wasn't converted, but thought I'd come back to this thread to at least acknowledge the poor quality of my own contributions! Many had nothing to do with the actual film, after all, which is just wrong. I see that the thread for The World's End may already be becoming a spiritual successor to this one in terms of Expendables comparisons as well...
