So, who are the female most iconic female characters of cinema?

I'd quite like it if you could do a top 10 list then i'll tally them up and then post the definitive top 20 on a separate post

I'll start adding them up on August 31st so if you could have them in by then that would be great

Nice to know 'iconic female characters 'covers the range from ditzes to manipulative sluts to badly acted harridans. Plus Faye Dunaway.

And if you've taken the wrong turn out of Objects of Desire, please remember site rules on what pics are permissible to post.

Yup this definitely counts as Iconic.

Plus agree with Ripley and Holly Golightly whole heartedly. Also Catwoman (Pfeiffer), Mrs Robinson, Clarice Starling and maybe Sugar Kane Kowalczyck (Marilyn Monroe).

Most iconic is not synonymous with best. In a sense of being ubiquitously everywhere, symptomatic of an era and type of filmmaking, instantly recognisable to huge amounts of the population etc. Hannah Montana is probably a more iconic character of recent years than The Bride.

Clarice Starling may be a far more interesting, convincing, deep, well devloped and well performed character than Hannibal Lecter, but it's him that has become truly iconic.

I agree with this though. I think that animation probably provides quite a few examples of female characters that have an iconic status beyond their film and beyond the world of movie lovers. Disney's Snow White, for example, is the version of that iconic ancient character that everybody pictures when somebody says "Snow White".

Maud from Harold and Maud, played by Ruth Gordon

and Vivian from The Big Sleep played by Lauren Bacall.

Just a couple that come to mind.

For pure iconic-ness (is that even a word?) you can add Princess Leia to that.

Add another vote for Ripley, Annie Hall, Thelma and Louise, Princess Leia and Jessica Rabbit.

Of the top of my head:

Clementine - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Carrie White - Carrie

Norma Desmond - Sunset Boulevard

Mia Wallace - Pulp Fiction (more the look than the actual character)

Marge Olmstead-Gunderson - Fargo

Could probably think of a few more...
