I took a look around and couldn't see another thread on the NBA or basketball, so perhaps this could be Empire's home on the subject....

So, the Lakers and Kobe won another Championship in the 2009-2010 season but things promise to turn around in the coming season as basketball is in the midst of its biggest and most important free agent period in the sports history. Lebron James, one of, if not the, premier athlete in the world right now has seen out his contract with the Cavs and is courting new clubs. THIS IS HUGE. (although an anti-climax could occur if he re-signs with the Cavs for more team control).

If that wasn't enough perennial NBA All-Star Chris Bosh is also a free agent along with Dwayne Wade another 6X All-Star and top league scorer in 2009. If 2, or indeed all 3 of these lads make it onto the same franchise for the coming season then the Lakers better watch out.

Thoughts? Opinions? Discussion?

Why? For being stupidly tall in a game where being tall is the main factor in you being good or not?

Well, it's just like, my opinion, man. Lebron is a fantastic athlete and is incredible to watch.

You think the NBA is populated by a bunch of random lanky blokes? Maybe, they also are incredibly skilful and athletic lanky blokes?

Furthermore, certain sports have particular physical pre-requisites to play at the highest levels. And sure basketball takes this to quite an extreme with the league average height being 6"6. But are Jason Leonard and Martin Johnson lesser rugby players just because their body types suited playing prop and lock forward? American Football is another sport in which physical size denotes your position, but not you success. How many 5"0 goalies are their in football? But I digress....

Yes you have to be tall, but you also have to fucking awesome, and in Lebron's case, the fucking awesomest!

If a player was that good we would have heard of him even being non fans of the sport. Thats a faked clip. I wish you would have posted something that had impressed me rather than annoyed me.

Ooops my bad! I just thought it was a funny and cool clip. There are obviously more pertinent and impressive displays of the guy knocking about youtube, check them out if you so wish.

But come on, just because you haven't heard of him means that he isn't all that? I for all my knowledge do not know the name of the worlds best surfer/fencer/squash/baseball player. But it doesn't mean that their skill is any less as a result.

I've not really followed the NBA since the mid-'90s I guess, and even then I wasn't massively into it, though a big factor there was the limitations of keeping track of a seven game series when the internet wasn't what it is now.

This interests me - is there any chance of something like this happening? Because there are relatively speaking so few players in a team, unless there are league rules (I'm assuming they have a salary cap in the NBA) to discourage it, surely it raises the possibility of the top group of players organising things amongst themselves in order to win championships? And I'm sure another result would be some massive ego clashes when things went wrong.

Bosh is reportedly set to join Wade at Miami Heat. Whilst Lebron announces his future on Thursday.

If you wanted to show us how brilliant a sportsman is then show us how brilliant a sportsman is not a joke. I thought you had posted the vid to show us just that and so my point was that 'if' a basketball player could have really been that good to just pop shots in like that we all would have heard of him by now.

Im not into basketball but heard about Kobe Bryant was I was back in uni (left in 99). Im happy to believe you that this guy is good but try posting something impressive rather than funny when you want us to know how good he is.

I used to like Charlotte Hornets in the late 90s. Then lost touch with the sport and only recently found out they don't even exist anymore! Can't watch a whole game of basketball, prefer baseball for my Yank sports fix. Go Red Sox.

Basketball is the only sport I watch, can't stand to sit through a game of football, nothing happens

Don't want to see LeBron end up in Miami, would rather see him in Chicago.

I can't believe the Hawks resigned Joe Johnson to a max contract, got as far as they could with him, needed to let him go, push Crawford up to starter and bring someone with a different style in.

Hornets got bought by New Orleans so they are now the New Orleans Hornets
Charlotte got a new team, the Bobcats, who are owned by the legendary Michael Jordan

Well, he scores from 80ft away in THIS video, not that different from the other clip.

Wow, LeBron is going to Miami with Wade and Bosh

Not what I wanted to see in terms in someways but should be interesting to see. Still can't see past Lakers for the championship next year, will take time for the Heat to gel.

Nice! But it is very different from the other clip.

I'm not massively into any particular sport generally but I've heard of LeBron so he must be alright. Its a shame that basketball doesn't seem to be very popular here yet as it seems like quite a fun game to watch.

Am I the only NBA fan around here? Wondered if more have joined in the 18 months since this thread fell silent.

Not watched since Clyde the Glide and Hakeem the Dream were on the go. Used to spend ages practicing the fade away jumper from the low post. In my Olajowan top. See how far from the hoop I could my finger-roll lay-up going. When the first wave of Europeans were on the go.

Those were the days before the area of tatts exceeded the volume of class.

I canna really get into game these days. Plus it's pretty hard to watch in the UK.

True, boaby. It's shown on ESPN, but not very regularly. They show more NCAA/college basketball than NBA. If they want to get a foothold in sports broadcasting in the UK, they're going to have to buck their ideas up. Perhaps Sky's muscle around the licenses is too tight.

Anyway, the Hawks have Portland at home tonight, looking for their fourth straight win -- and with a much shorter season this year, every game really does count. Hoping to see Smith notch up another 20+ pts.
