List time again (although I'm obligated to say 'barb's list is cooler ) Simple enough in terms of rules, pick the 100 most visually amazing films you've ever seen and send them in. If you can't make 100 then 50 will be fine. Any film is eligible (as long as it's not Avatar ), you can vote for features, shorts, animation, documentaries, anything you like as long as it's a film. Fritzl and Elab are on board for counting duties.

Send your lists to

empirebeautifulfilms@hotmail.com

Deadline will be end of August, giving us 2 months.

I'll send a list, but will leave it till pretty much the last minute. I can tell you now though that Kieslowski is going to use up a fair few places.

What's the size of the final list going to be?

Thanks guys, good to see some interest already.  I'm hoping this can crossover with the director list and any films tried for one list might also provide inspiration for the other.

I think the best way to go with it is to see how many lists and individual films we get nominated. Aim for 100 but if it makes more sense to list the top 200/250 etc then go with it.

What's going to be interesting in lists is the range of things that people will find beautiful. Obviously stuff like, Badlands will make alot of lists, but otherwise some other stuff might be interesting.

Yeah, that's why I'm thinking it'll be difficult to put a number limit on the final list right now just in case there is a huge range of films nominated.

Prediction for Swords' top 5

Great idea, I'll have to think about it. I assume you didn't use the word cinematography to allow for animation? And Avatar.

It'll be intersting to see the type of films that come out of the poll.
People tend to associate visually beautiful in cinema as good cinematography-don't think it's that simple myself!
At least Naked can't be in this

Do I even need to vote?

Anyway, in spite of an infuriatingly vague category to vote for (surely beauty is the most subjective thing evar?) I will actually be able to vote with confidence on this one.

I won't argue there.

Yeah, I figured the idea of calling it a cinematography poll could be a bit limiting and just end up in debates if something counted or not. Avatar would be a major stumbling point because there was a lot of debate about if it should even have been nominated for the cinematography Oscar in the first place.

Which is why this could be a very unpredictable list.

You realise that everyone is just going to argue hideously about what beauty is? (it's truth by the way, and truth is beauty. That is all ye know)

I like the term "visually beautiful"-i think it's more challenging than a straight animation or cinematography poll.
Unlike though, the Best British Films,it's quite open to interpretation in terms of it's in or it's out on the list.

Maybe, but it is about visually beautiful films, which does narrow it down somewhat.
Put it this way,it looks like it has to be a very diverse list that will cause much debate.

You can't ban Avatar, mind you,on what basis could you ban ANY film from this poll, given the very subjective nature and criteria of the question?
Very few would vote for it anyway.
Maybe at number 90!

Shit. Shit shit shit. I fucking love visual films; it's one of the things that I look for most in a film. Which basically means this poll is going to be imfuckingpossible.

I  know, I'm currently wondering if 50 is a stupidly low number.

Whatever you feel, just the 50 films you've found the most visually astonishing.

'course you'd have to consider stuff like The Descent - the cinematography and use of light and reflective surfaces underground was superbly done.
