Rubicon is the new conspiracy thriller series from AMC in the US, who have previously brought the world Mad Men, Breaking Bad and the less successful remake of the Prisoner.

Rubicon stars James Badge Dale, who recently featured in the Pacific, and also features Miranda Richardson, Arliss Howard (Full Metal Jacket) and David Rache (lots of things, including Burn After Reading).

For some strange reason the entire first episode is available to watch without any region blocks over at Dark Horizons, despite only being available to US residents on AMC's own website.

Havng watched the opening ep I have to say that I'm intrigued.  Although well acted its a slow burn affair and plotwise its all pretty opaque so far in terms of what's going on and who's who (you have to pay attention or it makes no sense at all) but I'm liking the paranoid feel, the slightly retro, 70's, 'Parallax View' & 'Three Days of the Condor' vibe and the washed out visuals.  It certainly hooked me enough to make me want to catch the second ep and see where it goes.  I just hope a UK network picks it up soon.

I recommend checking it out

Just watched it.

It was ok - I'll start with the negatives. It's glacially slow and the conspiracy side of things is so vague and ill-defined that it doesn't really demonstrate the main direction of the series. Some of the dialogue's atrocious too; and I'm not normally someone who is too bothered by such flaws in a pilot. On the upside, Dale's a pretty compelling lead, it looks great and there's an atmosphere and a sense of something interesting going on just-outside-of-the-frame that will be revealed as the series progresses.

Spoilers for Pilot

As Blunderbuss says, this is a specific nod to Three Days of the Condor in terms of the workplace of the lead and his colleagues - making links, etc, as well as lots of 70s browns, greens and yellows.

Bulk of the first episode is an extensive introduction to the main character, who doesn't have many facets others than, as one character says, mope. There are reasons for that but I think they've made a mistake there - he's far too young for the hyper-significant background they've given him (a child old enough for that treat a decade ago? Only if he wasn't having sex legally!). And there's no need to add that event on - it's too forced. But even clumsy stuff aside (just in case we don't get the point with David, Will goes to visit David's assistant and to make it work she apparently doesn't get his thing with numbers - the man had OCD, it's idiotic to suggest the other character wouldn't have known that), I do want to see the next episode. It could well be quite interesting.

Also, with Glee finished, the lead appears to have stolen Will Schuester's hair.

I was gonna say that too but couldn't remember that character's name!

Is the Will character supposed to be a fair bit older than Dale? That's a good point about his daughter.

I dont normally watch pilots before the show actually starts because I dont like the wait in between so I'll watch the pilot in August when the show starts.

Still not quite sure what to make of this. The pacing's glacial, there's very little in terms of character, and they've barely hinted at anything approaching an overall plot. BUT, I'm still fairly interested in seeing where it's going and Dale's doing a really good job in the lead considering 80% of the time he's staring into space looking pensive.

Third episode is a step up. Still very slow, but better character work, two (count 'em!) jokes, a solved puzzle (I'll be honest, I don't try to work things like that out, nor do I care if it's nonsense or not, as long as it ultimately forwards the plot) and a gun in a motorbike - though seriously, wouldn't that be the first place you'd check? Also, Clay Davis himself is one of the people trailing Will. Sheeeeeiiiiiiiiiiit.

Damn I didn't realise it was now airing, I'll have to catch up. I thought the first episode was interesting, but odd for a pilot episode - it didn't exactly leave you wanting more.

Anyone know what the title refers to? What is a rubicon? I know I could wiki it but I can't be bothered.

I'm guessing, within the context of this particular show, it means 'point of no return'.

Is anyone still watching?

I think its started to find its pace now, I won't pretend I know what the hell is going on but its definately intriguing and I'm keen to see where its headed. Can't imagine that its gonna be a ratings winner though.

It kicked up a few gears around episode 3 (I think the original show runner was replaced at that point). They've fleshed out the characters a bit more so while the plot hasn't acclerated at all, there's more meat on the bones rather than just scenes establishing atmosphere. Overall I'm really liking it by this point, despite the odd misstep and cliche.

Also, Miranda Richardson has shared one whole scene with another regular cast member.

And you're right in that its ratings are a bit off compared to AMC's other shows, but I think what will be most important is whether or not they're happy with it creatively by the end of the season. On the flipside, I wouldn't be against a one and done show as long as it wraps up properly.

No idea I'm afraid. Well worth sticking with though. Episode 9's the best one so far and it's amongst the best programmes on TV right now.

The last episode was the best so far with SPOILER: Spangler ordering the hit on Will.
Along with Boardwalk Empire, Rubicon is my favourite new show of the season.
Unfortunately the ratings are terrible and it may be cancelled.

It's the programme I look forward to the most each week right now. Yeah, the last episode was tense as hell and had tons of great scenes. I'm not desperate for a season 2, they'd have to retool it a bit (depending on what goes down in the remaining episodes of course), but they've produced such good ground work and character development over the middle stretch of episodes that I'd definitely like to where they'd take it.

Can't wait for the finale, the final few minutes of the last episode were fantastic.
SPOILERS: Can't believe they were too late to stop the attack. I really hope Kale doesn't get killed off.

Just watched the majority of this in the past few days, absolutely loved it! Started off slow but really picked up around ep 4, loved the mystery and really seemed to be doing things in an unconventional way. Really hope it gets a second season.

Me too. The finale was underwhelming and lacked resolution.

Spoilers for the full season ahead...

I have a few issues with the last episode, and it's something that I think can only be properly evaluated when we know if it is the last episode or not.

However, I do think that it largely worked well in terms of bringing the story full circle and working as both a series and season finale. In particular Spengler's receipt of the clover and subsequent defiance (?) was really awesome. I loved how they played that; even the single scene with the rest of Atlas under the single spotlight was almost piss-taking in its Bond-villain overtones, but it nevertheless worked.

Some of the characters got the short shrift in terms of an ending -- particularly Tanya, who wasn't in the last group of episodes very much at all -- in favour of story resolution. Kale at least got his ominous look around the office. Miles' descent into obsession was really good too.

On the downside, the Andy 'reveal' wasn't really in-keeping with the show (whether she was really helping or not...even that was amiguous to the point of confusing) and makes no sense when compared to the earlier scenes.

Real shame, looked at ratings of other AMC first seasons, very similar, guess that's how it goes though. Just started catching up, on ep 6, and loving it.

THurs 7th April BBC 4 10pm - no warning it was coming that I've seen, and no warning that it is already cancelled.
