 What do you think of Michael Mann. Only recently have I considered him as a descent director, he has made some good films such as Heat (where he got Pacino and De Nero in the same scene). I especially like Collateral because of the way it is directed. the camera is up close to the actors.

More's the pity. I enjoyed Vampires a lot but it still couldn't touch his earlier work.
"The Thing - They Live - Halloween - Escape From New York - Big Trouble In Little China" - my favourite films of dear, dear Johnny. I own most of his stuff on DVD and have a couple of books about him.
I hope and pray that one day soon he turns out a film that matches the brilliance of his earlier years.

 I'm a massive fan of his don't get me wrong but I often wonder how one man cannot make a decent film in x number of years given his back catologue - I may put it forward that as a pioneer of old school film making and real horror based and sc-fi based on real scares, real characters etc he cannot exist in today's environment in the genre of what appears to be an extended episode of Scooby Doo with a bloke armed with a meat hook and lots of thick yank teens.
 
He simlpy is too advanced for the genre he owned in the late 70's, early 80's.

 Have to agree there i bought GHOSTS OF MARS and it might not be the masters best but is still great fun to watch  like all his movies.All his movies are aimed at entertaining us notting less or more,he will never be up for an oscar but for us Carpenter fans WE DON'T GIVE A SHIT!Hopfully he'll turn out a couple of better than average Carpenter films,but as long as we see that :A JOHN CARPENTER FILM across the screen i'll be happy enough cause he'll always try to entertain if notting else.DVDs of J C so far;Dark Star,Assault on Precinct 13,Halloween,The Fog,Escape From New York,The Thing,Starman and Big Trouble in Little China.

Without Halloween there would be no Scream and the face of Horror films would be very different (and i doubt not for the better) had it not been for Mr John Carpenter and Mustapha Akkad.

I find it hard to answer your comments as they are as basic as you can get. Halloween IS and always will be great because it cost very little, was made by a bunch of talent that wanted to make a film and did an amazing job. I dont know when you watched it but im guessing your under the age of 20 and have watched it within the past 2 years or so. 

I think the reason Halloween is great is because it just IS.  Its creepy, its atmospheric, it has a basc storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat for the full run time.

As for the ending. There was two ways they could have ended that film.
(a) Michael is shot and falls out the window and lies there DEAD.
(b) Michael is shot and falls out the window and lies there- but then he gets up(off camera) and escapes..- thus proving that it looks like he is superhuman after all and is something to be feared.


What ending would you have chosen?

Halloween is a role model for all horrors, a text book guide to making horror films. A great horror from John Carpenter and a great main theme from Carpenter. Curtis and Pleasance are also good in their roles. Perhaps you should watch it again, you might feel differently

 I've only seen Halloween so far from the works of John Carpenter (he did contribute to The American Nightmare documentary, but I didn't count that one) and I liked it.
I didn't praise it as one of the best horror films I have seen, but it was an enjoyable experience.

I agree that this has become cliched because of the various imitations out there, like Romero's Night of the Living Dead- sorry for going off topic with this legendary horror film, but I think this is a great example of something that was really impressive back in the day, but has become cliched as it aged over time.

The fact is that the music, from Carpenter himself, really gives what could have been another low budget horror flick that edge of errieness that makes it stand out.

I haven't seen it in a while... but I know that it was an enjoyable slasher, that would probably be one of my favourite slasher horrors, along with Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream (sorry about mentioning these Wes Craven films too!)

yeah i know, i appriciate that - but if you imagine that you've seen loads of the film that followed first, then Halloween wouldn't have quite the same impact. I can still appiciate it, and i really like it, but i know its not the same for everyone

 Am I the only person in Britain who enjoyed In The Mouth of Madness? When I saw this back in '95 I thought it was the start of a return to form from the legend who made Halloween, Assault on Precinct 13 and The Thing.
How the hell can a guy who made those classics go on to make Ghosts of Mars????

 See i thought Ghosts of Mars was alright. Its not The Thing or AoP13 or Halloween or Escape From New York or anything like that, and its starts a bit messily, but i quite enjoyed it by the end

i read a short interview with John Carpenter in which he said its great to get paid and not do the work. Perhaps he is just cashing in for the stories he has already created.

Did you see a different version than everyone else?

I love all The Carpenter's movies (ESPECIALLY Ghosts of Mars).  I have quite the soft spot for Prince of Darkness as well.  Good scares with just the right amount of ham from everyone involved.

Prince of Darkness still scares me to this day. I love all John Carpenter films (well except for The Fog but i still have that on DVD).

Escape from LA , great fun film.
The Assault remake was okay but of course the original one is still the best.

 When JC is good, he is a fucking genius.
However, when he is bad, he sucks.
No matter how many great films John has made throughout his career, he has always managed to make a few real stinkers. It's hard to believe that the man who directed Halloween and The Thing, was also behind the camera for Ghosts of Mars and They Live!
 
Regardless, JC is one of the true great's.

 The Thing is always quoted as Johns best but Mouth Of Madness which i finally got on region 1 DVD is equal to The Thing.A brilliant performance from Sam Neil and an amazing story line that King himself could have written.Though to be honest it's more H P Lovecraft as it's based on a Lovecraft story.But that's the way John mixes Lovecraft with a more modern style,and it works brilliantly.
