I re-watched They Live! for the first time in a couple of years. I have to say, I bloody loved it!!! Have no idea as to why I didn't when I first saw it, but hey, there you go.

Ghosts of Mars is still shit though......

Just rediscovered Carpenter's work and what a joy!

Escape From New York, The Thing and Halloween are brilliant- easily some of the most atmospheric films I've ever seen.

All of Carpenter's films up to Ghost of Mars were awesome they all had the same look to em that slow, long shot with not much happening and he always had a group of extras playing freaks and strange people like in Prince of Darkness the same can be seen in Escape from New York then of course in Ghost of Mars. But its Halloween that stands the test o time and will always be my favourite film :)

Then there's his music. Jesus! to think initially he only did it to save cash. some of the most sinister and atmospheric music i've ever heard( especially halloween and Assault on Precinct 13) Perfect

I finally got 'In the mouth of madness' on DVD the other day....ah..what a film :) When JC gets it right he really does nail it down. I...ahem....quite like Ghosts of Mars..apart from the 'humourous' lines right at the end

I like Ghosts of Mars. It isn't Escape from New York, but it isn't as bad as everyone makes out, especially the second half.

I would love Carpenter to come back and make movies like the Thing,Escape from new york and the fog he was one of the best directors in the late 70s,early 80s i know his next film is with Mr cage and the way his film career is going over the last five years i hold no hope for this film

Ohh yeah absolutely, I agree with you completely on that.... cant decide which is better out of Assault on Precinct 13 or The Thing, they're both equally good.. The Thing stands out as possibly one of the most visually impressive horror movies I've ever seen.....

But with Assault on Precinct 13, everything is so perfect about it: the atmosphere, the music, the setting, the suspense etc, its become such a cult classic.

Dark star is a little gem aint it.

but The Thing, as has been said earlier, is as close to perfection as those genres get.

I love Carpenter's work, I haven't seen all his movies, but from the ones I've seen, I gotta say I cant wait to see the rest.

Halloween - 5/5
The Fog - 4/5
Assault on Precinct 13 - 5/5
Big Trouble in Little China - 3/5

Those are  probably john carpenters best efforts, as well as The Thing and Escape From New York. Watch The Thing next and let me know what you think of it.

Will do, I'm trying to get the Thing on Blu-Ray, I'm still looking around for a good price, but I hear the DVDs dead cheap (3)

Finally watched John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars, and I have to say I didnt think it was bad as everyone makes it out to be, the beginning was God awful there was no interesting dialogue or anything, the appearence of Statham's name in the opening credits made me dread even more, but when Ice Cube gets involved the film does pick up a little (I'm not a big fan of Ice Cube and this was the first movie I was watching with him in it).
I think the thing that let down the film, was the way the story was told in flashback, then in the flashback it was always rewinding and showing another characters point of view.
This film is worth a watch, but a second viewing is out of the question.

A fun and decent enough movie if you try to ignore all it's flaws, but nothing interesting here to keep you hooked.

2/5

Carpenter's one of the best directors ever. Dark Star, EFNY, Assault On Precinct 13 and The Thing are all 5-star classics. Assault's probably my favourite though.

Good man. Why they decided to do a shitty remake of a film like Assault is truly beyond me......

I don't pick films by the directors name as a rule. In fact I don't really remember their names tbh. However, Carpenter 's name does stick as I find a few of my favourite films were made by him-Big Trouble, the Escapes, Precint 13, Fog etc etc. It could be coincidence but I reckon he just makes films that people like. And can stand rewatching.

Other than the great music, its not scary and its not gripping enough - The Thing is his horror masterpiece.

JOHN CARPENTER is one of my favourite directors. he's made some of the most memorable movies of all time that true fans always love. but the past decade has been well just shit i wish i knew why. but at least he has made some films that may be copied but never bettered. these films below are just briliant to watch again and again.

halloween
the thing
escape to new york
the fog
big trouble in little china
starman
precinct 13
in the mouth of madness
