You thieves - I was putting a list together on this!

Granted I was adding more quality control on the films - I'm pretty sure you've got stuff like Always in there!

Assuming a minimum of 3 films, and being a little stricter on the definition of great, how about

Kurosawa/Shimura
Koybayashi/Nakudai
Sayles/Strathairn
Sorrentino/Servillo
Boeticher/Scott

Stanwyck did more interesting things with Capra than the corn. Maybe also Jean Arthur there - I'd say George Stevens, too, but I think Shane's one of her worst roles.

Fritz Lang/Joan Bennett?
Michael Curtiz/Claude Rains?

 You forgot John Woo/Chow Yuen-Fat, probably the greatest pairing in terms of action film the world of cinema has ever seen, producing such enduring classics as "A Better Tomorrow", "The Killer"(!) and "Hard Boiled", which influence reaches from "The Matrix" to ... well nearly every action movie which hit the screen in the last two decades

Glad to see that Kurosawa/Mifune made the list, though.

What about Clint and Morgan? Invictus,Unforgiven and Million dollar Baby.
Ritchie and the Stath, Lock stock and Snatch are both great and revolver not so.

I've been registered here for 4 years and never before have I felt compelled to comment, but I'm with Samurai_Zoso above, I can't believe you missed out Johnny Woo and Chow Yun Fat! There's never been a better pairing in the entire span of movie history.

Luc Besson + Jean Reno = coolest French cinema of the 80's and 90's

Judd Apatow + Seth Rogen = best modern american comedy

Renny Harlin + Samuel L. Jackson = "The fucking shark ate me!" Best exploitation of Sam's coolness.

Wes Anderson & Owen Wilson (He also co-wrote the only Anderson film he hasn't yet appeared in, Rushmore)

Perhaps George Lucas & Harrison Ford. They did American Graffiti, Star Wars & Indiana Jones together. The last one was Speilberg directed, it was still largely down to Lucas.

I don't believe you didn't put Woody Allen and Diane Keaton on the list - Annie Hall, Manhattan, Sleeper, Love and Death, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Play it Again Sam, Interiors...

Its completely irrelevent, but I like how on the Coen Brothers & Frances McDormand/Steve Buscemi page, both actors are in their winter Fargo clothes, whilst the Coens are in sunglasses, sunhats, short sleeves...

George Roy Hill and Paul Newman? They made Slap Shot, The Sting AND Butch Cassidy together. George Roy Hill was apparently a horrible director to work with, yet Paul Newman managed 3 films with him. How did they not get a mention?

Or Spike Jonze and Catherine Keener? Another 3 films together, one of which got them both Oscar noms

Scorsese and Leo? Coppola and Robert Duvall? Pixar and John Ratzenberger? Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman? Hitchcock and anyone blonde? Woody Allen and anyone female? Really should've been a longer list...

i know it's been said before but i have to say it again; no John Woo & Chow Yuen-Fat? They made some of the best action films of all time. HARDBOILED.

John Woo and Chow Yun Fat definitely! The Killer and Hard Boiled (with the always excellent Tony Leung) redefined the genre....

and how about Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon - the Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum along with the Green Zone.....

Great to see Wong Kar Wai and Tony in there though!

I cannot believe such a prestigious magazine would leave out of this list one of the most infamous partnerships in the business: Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers.



Aside from making four very funny Pink Panther movies (their fifth and last one wasn't so good, and lets not even mention their posthmus "collaboration"), they also made The Party, aka the best improvisational comedy in the last 50 years.

Anyway, just thought I'd mention it. I'll refer to my favorite director-actor relationships later on.

 Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis (in fact, if the minimum's 3, you could say PJ and anyone in all three Rings)
Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes/Ben Affleck/Jason Lee
Spielberg and Harrison Ford, ffs (crap 4th Indy aside, that's still 3)
George Lucas and Ford
And I know they've only done two films together as a director/actor partnership buuuuuut..... Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg. At least an honorary mention.

Agreed, especially given the quality of the films.

And trilogies / sequels shouldn't be counted separately IMO
