^ The most obviously 'shot on digital' film I've ever seen was Superman Returns*. It really looks terrible, worse than AOTC tbh although its a better film I wish they had shot it on film.
Yep, Superman Returns looked absolutely terrible in some scenes and by all accounts Singer had to be persuaded to shoot digitally again for his latest film after the nightmare of Superman Returns.

Watched yesterday:

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi
The final installment of the original trilogy still is a fine closure of the lot.
The scenes between Luke and Darth Vader still give me the goosebumps, they`re brilliant. That makes it all the more sad that Lucas decided to make the changes in the blu-ray editions the way he did. They suck big time, how else can I say it? The blinking Ewoks are irritating as well.
I wish he never did make these changes...

Finished watching the original trilogy today. Can't say the blinking ewoks bothered me at all. The "Nooooo" bit...The Noooo is bad but it didn't ruin it for me, it's still a great scene.

Films look and sound great but I'm not sure they did a perfect job, there's still some squares around tie fighters and other bits. There's a strange one I never noticed before at the end of Empire when Darth is backing Luke up before cutting his hand off. I probably only noticed it now because the picture is so clear.

Anyway, great overall but I wouldn't say essential.

the thing is there is already a 'noooooo!' motif in the OT when luke reacts to a shock moment in each movie.
adding the vader one to ep 6 kinda messes with that.

the box set helps rise in home entertainment-

the dvds for the OT and prequels gave you option of 3 different sets of main menus.
is it the same for the blu rays?

I always hated those menus, especially in the chapter selection screen. Just let me pick already, I don't want to fly outside the Death Star each time I change screen.

So my mum got me the Full Saga Boxset for my birthday, so I'll start watching those on Friday.

I'm looking forward to seeing how good they look, but I have to admit I'm apprehensive about seeing some of the more notorious changes for myself...

13 minutes into The Phantom Menace... wish I had a bigger TV.

Oh, and Jar Jar diving into the lake looks as awful as ever

[EDIT]

I do quite like...

"Power's back."

"Argh Monster's back!"

Now onto Attack of the Clones, bloody hell I'd forgotten how bad the dialogue was

And Anakin is seriously pissing me off.

[EDIT]

And Obi Wans beard looks stupid too.

In spite of how disappointing The Phantom Menace was, I remember being so excited about the release of Episode II!

Would you recommend the set on the whole, Hood_Man?

To be honest I'm tempted to just skip Clones and move onto Sith, so I can let you know then. Or at least skip forward to Christopher Lee.

The picture quality is very good though. My fears about DNR in The Phantom Menace were greatly exaggerated before. It is occasionally noticeable, but it's not really very distracting.

I'm looking forward to seeing the original trilogy in HD, I might get through them tomorrow. I just wonder how much some of the additions will bother me.

I haven't looked at any of the extras yet though.

This might piss a few people off, but the added rocks which R2 hides behind from the sandpeople do make more sense. Even though he's in the shadows it's a bit of a stretch to think that sand dwelling creatures couldn't see him standing, like, right there!

The sound Obi Wan makes to scare them off sounds stupid though.

Yippee! Alec Guinness!

For all the talk about Lucas being a hack and criticisms of his "Join-the-dots-filmmaking,"* it's remarkable how well A New Hope links to the prequels. Uncle Owen flinching when Beru says Luke is too much like his father, Tarkin reporting to the Imperials that the Emperor has dissolved the senate and swept away all traces of the Republic etc, they're not just words any more they have real meaning.

I wasn't expecting that.

[EDIT]

*Admittedly I've done this myself so I'm not having a go at people here.

Even Greedo shooting first doesn't both me so much. It's still daft to think Greedo could miss that badly from that distance, but at least it's over mercifully quick...

I suspect that 3 or 4 releases down the line it'll be a single frame ala Fight Club.

The Jabba scene is still ridiculously out of place though, and Han stepping on Jabbas tail looks terrible. It's slow, it's repetitive, it just generally doesn't work and I hope one day it goes.

George, listen to me here, I'll trade you the Jabba scene for Greedo shooting first, I'll trade!

If I can think of one criticism of A New Hope in relation to 'Sith, it's the sabre fight between Kenobi and Vader. Until the prequels it always just felt like a fight between two former enemies/rivals. It still feels that way to me now, but now it doesn't feel right. There's no sense of the bitter seething hatred that Vader felt toward Obi Wan when he was lying on the ground in agony on Mustafar, nor does there seem to be any regret from Obi Wan in seeing his former friend and student in his current form. They both just come off as a bit smug.

I guess that's not really a fair criticism of A New Hope since they were released 28 years apart in reverse order, but it kinda spoils the whole "Six Film Story Arc" idea.

Another benefit of the prequels is the scene with Yoda and Luke where Luke learns who Yoda is. Speaking about his experience teaching Jedi, listing the traits that Jedi need, again Yodas speech is suddenly more powerful because I've actually seen how the Jedi were in the days of the Republic, and not just relying on my imagination.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to watch them all in quick succession

The lighting in the Carbon freezing chamber looks terrific. Temuera Morrisons voice acting is terrible.

[EDIT]

"Alert my Star Destroyer, to prepare for my arrival" will never sound good. I forgot it was coming, I damn near bit my tongue off cringing with frustrated surprise.

Actully it undercuts what Yoda is trying to teach, that being a warrior isn't about strength. Yeah right, we have just seen the guy beating the crap out of people with his saber!

I'd say it is more a case of being a Jedi isn't about being a warrior. It's just that the skills you pick up along the way make you a pretty efficient one. The Jedi's main role was keeping the peace which is why their weapon is primarily defensive in nature.

quote:

Yeah right, we have just seen the guy beating the crap out of people with his saber!

And look where that got him. He went from being one of the most important individuals in the galaxy to an outlaw living in a swamp. Pretty much as soon as the Jedi were manipulated from being peacekeepers into to being soldiers everything went to hell for them.

Of all the Jedi in the prequels the one who most closely followed the teachings Yoda gave in Empire was Qui-Gon Jinn and he was considered a maverick.

I guess Yoda had a lot of time to think about the true nature of being a Jedi while he was in exile.

Pretty much. Wars not make one great eh? Except in these stupid things Yoda is all about chopping heads during war.

Surely attack can be just another form of defence?

Help me out guys, do I watch Jedi tonight or leave it til next week?
