'The Ghost'(aka The Ghost Writer) is one of those films, for me, that really impresses and I find extremely intriguing and engaging, but often struggle to explain why to others, as, on the surface, it doesn't seem particularly ground breaking or different. And in fact I suppose it isn't, it's just a solid and well structured story that is acted, and directed, very, very well. I think the same can be said of 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' (although I don't The Ghost was quite as good as that one). It has an intresting and well written story behind it, although having never read the book I'm not sure how much the film deviates from the novel, or if it's been a case of just transferring the story into a screen adaptation. Inevitably, due to running time constraints, a film will generally be forced to lose some parts of the original, but this film certainly has more than enough depth to its characters and plot to provide a fantastic motion picture. The plot is gripping, and eery right from the off. I think it is slow enough to make sure the viewer never loses their way with what is going on, but at the same time has enough pace to prevent it from getting boring. I'm not a McGregor fan AT ALL, and although this film still doesn't have me convinced over his acting abilities, his bright eyed, naive, theatre-esque style seems to quite suit his role in this movie. I like Brosnan, and he is as reliable as ever, with Olivia Williams putting in an excellent shift, and Tom Wilkinson his ever impressive self. Wonderful cinematography and location choice, a good soundtrack to accopmany it. A very enjoyable film from a controversial, but still clearly very talented, director.
