Released in 1997, this underrated gem was slated by critics and audiences alike. Quite a shame really, it has a fantasic cast and they all deliver some cracking performances (Alicia Silverstone is particularly memorable as 'Batgirl' - not an easy character to pull off). I think the problem was that it had some stiff competition at the Summer Movie Box-Office (THE LOST WORLD, CON AIR, MEN IN BLACK) and as a result, failed to find an audience. However, like many other classic action films, it has found a well-deserved status amongst film-fans thanks to dvd. Joel Schumacher brought a real freshness to BATMAN (I don't know why but his style is more appealing than the uber-gothic vibe of Tim Burton). I'm gonna have to snare the blu-ray soon.

The Bat-Card alone makes this a classic.

It's not misunderstood, it's dire but it does have a great cast who deserved a much better script. It didn't flop either if I'm not mistaken, it did okay business but the critical response was so savage that it didn't make as much as previous instalments.

Not according to Empire, Snake-Eyes, they gave it three stars so it stands to reason they see it as good as Mission Impossible 3 and Iron Man.

The writing was on the wall at the end of Forever when Kilmer donned that silver sonar Bat suit, from there on in the Schumacer Bat films were an abomination.

I just don't understand how Robin and Batgirl's eye-mask is enough to hide their identities.

BTW, Alicia did look fine back in the day, must youtube the Aerosmith Crazy video.

I like the idea that we now have to have a thread about every BatMan film even the bad ones to claim that they may actually be better than given credit for. This one makes more sense as B and R is considered such a turky, there for people who do actually quite like it do have a lot more to appeal about, for the record they are wrong it is maybe one of the worse films ever made, and Uma's the only highlight.

A few friends and I recently put this on one evening with the intention to just kinda laugh at it and to watch a blue Arnie. Forty minutes in it was switced off and made way for Point Break. Just sayin', the film is so bad it doesn't even work on the 'lets watch it for a laugh and kick seven bells out of it' level.

The most amazing thing out of it all was the fact that talent actually had a career still to progress with after it, Thurman and Clooney arguebly the better actors from the key cast and they have stayed the distance, B&R could have been the deathbed for them both.
