Is anyone feeling any schadenfreude at the memory of the arrogance that came from him and Barclays at the time of the bailout?

They get earlier every year, most schools in this area have a full 2 week left yet.

How is bashing bankers not bashing Tories?

Ours finished last Wednesday. And, of course, students are now off on hols as well. That'll be more national, although the schools in Scotland/England do still seem to have that disconnect.

Not when you've got a labour government tipping the nod and a wink.

Regulation went to pot pre-labour, was made worse both deliberately and through apathy during labour, and this government seem to feel the same, except when a story blows up and then they're all 'oh, we need to look at the banking sector'. Even though that was sidelined after talking it up during the election - they seemed particularly worried about letting Cable near it at the time in case he wasn't on-message enough, although his performance since suggests that may have been slightly off the mark.

On this one I'd say its politicians rather than party. But I might be unfairly maligning the Greens or some independent if I make it that general

Your point?

Sorry I didn't realise it was that subtle.

If this was the current government being linked to supporting or even suggesting that Barclays shouldn't provide quotes at the levels represented by real transactions there would be page upon page of it by now.

It would seem a lot of posters on here are simply ignoring a major story, probably the largest current political story which will certainly a big talking point in British politics over the next few months, simply because it doesn't involve Tory bashing.

Instead probably one of the busiest threads on the board is currently dropping down the forum because it doesn't fit in with the general political beliefs on here while a huge story that should be discussed is brushed under the carpet.

EDIT: Hang on, The PM announced a parliamentary enquiry rather than a huge independent legal judicial probe favoured by Red Ed.
Normal business will probably now resume.

That's a fair enough point but just to play devil's advocate, it's not very often we see you criticising the tories either is it?

Fair comment, there are actually quite a few areas where I do question the Torys, its just seems little point adding to the already raging attacks on here. Its not a balanced debate, and I see no point with joining in when everyone's in agreement.
I think I've said I disagree with large chunks of the current education system, of SATs, league tables and GCSE's. The latter of which were brought in by the Tories I believe.

Incidentally I've never voted Tory in a general election.

The problem is the banking sector is a huge plus for our economy, and has many positive benefits. This "all bankers are evil" rhetoric being thrown about by large proportions of the media is just ignorant of the facts and is just playing to the crowd. Not political party should be looking to make such generalisations across an entire industry, especially one which has been more than paying its way prior to the last 5 years.
I agree with Cameron that it isn't the time for a long winded judicial review but right now its need reasonable quick and certainly decisive action on how certain employees at certain banks have been operating. If this review shows that it is endemic across every bank then it might be time for a full indepth judicial review but that is entirely dependant on if its identified as necessary.

It needs heavy regulation and fast to prevent a banking disaster happening again. All of it's benefits tax wise were wiped out by us having to pump hundreds of billions into the sector and then suffering services being slashed.

Another major problem with the City is the way it sucks in some of our most talented individuals, mathematicians, physicists, engineers etc. - some extremely smart people have been lost to our economy because of the money on offer.

Lots of questions there. Services being slashed because they had stupid amounts of money thrown at them during the Boom times without a real return in quality of service.

I just don't think a heavily regulated Banking sector is the solution to this.

Incidentally can some of you guys help me out, in relative terms are the bankers worse than the Nazi's yet?

The problem, surely, is that some areas of banking - with their made-up risky products and attitude to spending - have caused genuine harm to many economies and don't seem to have learned a lesson from it. That kind of thing can cause a general bad name.

That said, I don't think you've got the equivalent of a Godwin's Law yet, so you must still be ranking slightly lower. (This reminds me of a charity thing I saw. A group of tax officers near the office in Birkenhead whose headline enticement to donate was long the lines of  'at least we're not as bad as the CSA' - which had also opened one of its offices in Birkenhead thereby taking over from the tax peeps as the most hated ).

Nazis at least accepted the concept of society. Bankers?

What?

You two can stay!

Quite disapponted with my score...I blame my education as I didn't do history at school because I chose geography. I hated history at the time but I wish had chosen that over geography now...did I really need to know about porous rocks instead?

No excuses really as I should've known some of those I didn't.

13 - BOOM. Got the carpenter one wrong (it was a toss of a coin between answering carpenter or weaver - I choose...poorly), and the English imposing taxes on Wales one wrong (I was a century early). Vital that people wishing to live here know this information however. It is simply impossible to be a good citizen unless you can answer arbitrary historical questions correctly.

Is it? I've lived here all my life and I only got 7 right (and three of those were guesses). Other than making me look like a 'nana at a pub quiz I can't see how forgotting stuff about Oliver Cromwell's ever gonna hold me back.

I'm guessing sarcasm.

I still can't work out why we didn't have our own carpenters.

11. I've never done anything less relevant and more useless.

I've lived in Ireland for almost 13 years. I'd thoroughly expect to fail a similar test on Ireland. But I'd really want to know why the government would find this important when I've contributed over 1/2 million directly to the government in income tax, levies, VAT, property tax, etc. And as I'm a sales person and my market is export I've probably brought in well over 10M to the economy in that time. Would seriously piss me off it there was a suggestion that I'm not a good citizen cos I don't know a few historical questions.

Hmm, I feel I should clarify I do not actually believe that unless you happen to know or guess some useless historical facts you will be a terrible citizen. I thought that it was obvious that I was being sarcastic about a ridiculous requirement of immigrants but it appears I've whooshed a couple of people, so maybe not

I got the same score but I felt a slight sense of achievement. I'm not sure if that is down to passing a test or a me being a good citizen according to the test.

But I think that it is right that people moving to another country should have some sort of knowledge about its history. Children brought up in France, Germany, UK, USA, would be taught their country's history at some point (whether they remember it is another matter), so it is fair that new citizens should learn at least the basics (I would also include Geography as well). Although I like learning about history, so I don't see the problem
