 A friend is writing a book and she needs to coin a new phrase - it doesn't describe zombies per se, rather beings with no souls. She's been going through the latin origins of words to find something that hasn't been used..I've found Ghast and Eidelon, both have which have been used by previous authors..it wouldn't be a one off phrase, I think it would be used regularly, like Ringwraiths in LOTR..

Any ideas?

 What about something that hints at an empty vessel - husk, shell or urn?  Or there was a Czech movie about 15 years ago called "Telo bez duse" that translates as "body without soul" - you could always just run it all together to get telobezduse!

Right, (trying desperately to remember what i was taught for latin O level) - "anima" was the life-force or spirit, so what about reanima or exanima?

Or go sanskrit on their asses - "prana" is the idea of life-force , and is one of the 5 vital currents in the Hindu system, being particularly responsible for the beating of the heart and breathing.  Or maybe, if there's no life-force in these critters, "vyana" may be more appropriate, being the vital current responsible for the muscular system.

I mentioned some of these, and actually a character called Lazarus created these undead beings, so Lazarites is particularly apt! Also, the name of the planet it's set on is Anima, I think - so it's all a bit connected..

 In 'World War Z' the army guys nick name the Zombies "Zacks" so how about a nickname instead of a medical/scientist term. How about "Georges" in honour of George Romero,

 A word of greek origin is Apéthantoi, which means the undead in general.
My personal choice would be another Greek word, the Necrovates or Necrovatai (also Nekrovates/-ai), which means the dead who walk.
I'd go for a Greek word for a change, because a) I'm Greek, naturally , and b) Latin has been widely used so far.
Eidolon is not entirely accurate, it is mostly used to describe a phantom.

Does a Revenant have a soul? I saw a film called The Revenant in November (it's amazing by the way if you ever come across it!) about a guy who comes back from the dead, but can stop decomposing by eating people, and in the film was separated from a 'zombie' by definition. Not sure if he had a soul or not (although i reckon he did) but might be worth a look
