I am still disappointed that Vincent Ward's Alien 3 never got made.  I would loved to see the wooden satellite monastery in all its glory.  The film would still work today, if not better with the indigenous group versus hard to kill invading force themes (America/Iraq/Afghanistan).

Yeah, sounds a lot better than what we ended up with.

Also the Alien 3 wooden planet idea - interesting but would have been too radical a departure imo. Still a really cool idea for a sci-fi film but doesn't belong in the Alien universe established by Alien and Aliens, I know Alien 3 wasn't to everyone's tastes but it felt like it was in the same universe - albeit a different take and direction after Aliens. Alien Resurrection was dogshit though so even trying to go back into the high tech/space stylings didn't work.

Imo the best Alien 3 that never happened was the script (can't remember who by) which focused on Hicks, Newt and Bishop where Ripley died in the first act. I think it was set mostly on a space station where said survivors are picked up and somehow the aliens cause mayhem. Must track that down again. Certainly something that they could have tried to reuse for Alien 4 rather than that cloned Ripley crap, as much as Weaver is a great heroine the character really should have been left dead.

I think that story was in the Dark Horse Comics.  Will have a look when i get home

Aye. Aliens: Book One which was penned by Mark Verheiden if I can recall. Ripley doesn't die (she appears in the final page of Book 2 before Earth War kicks off), but the focus is switched to Hicks and Newt as they search for the Alien homeworld. Good stuff.
