The show has been renewed for a second season on the strength of the opening night viewing figures. Apparently they're record setting for HBO. Interestingly, according to some critics the first episode is the weakest of the early part of the season, which bodes amazingly for the next few episodes. I really loved the first episode, I'll definitely be sticking with it.

Loved the first episode, especially the subtle reveal about Stephen Graham's character.

Feel bad, I've still never seen The Sopranos on the strength of this....

I'm pretty excited about this but my hubbie is literally orgasmic. He's been depressed ever since the Sopranos finished.

This will have a long way to go before it can reach The Sopranos heights.

Almost forgot about the brilliantly executed tracking shots introducing the boardwalk.
The opening credits wasn't up to HBO's usual high standards (The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, True Blood etc).

Yeh, I have to agree with that one. I was looking forward to seeing what it'd be like and it ended up being quite disappointing, the rest of the show was great though.

Personally I really liked the credit sequence. Trying to find out what the song was that plays during the opening credits I stumbled across this zinger on IMDB. Its possibly the strangest complaint I've ever heard about a film/TV show on the internet. I don't think the guy understands metaphors.

"It was not the music that bothered me. It was the bottles gathering around Nucky's feet.
Why was he standing in the water, in a pair of very expensive shoes. And since the loading of the cases onto the tugs seemed to pass without incident, how did the bottles get into the ocean."

I'll amend.

Just watched the pilot and this looks like it's going to be a pretty good season for TV.

I've never been a fan of Scorsese or Gangster films but that was just fantastic. Steve Buscemi has already nailed the character of Nucky and I was really surprised to see Stephen Graham in there as Al Capone.

Can't wait for the next episode.

Really enjoyed the pilot episiode, looks to be another corker to add to HBO's evergrowing list.
It's good that shows like this keep coming along, as I'm starting to run out of quality US TV shows to watch. Infact all I've got left is The Sopranos,(Which I know the ending to as it was mentioned and parodied pretty much everywhere after it aired) and I watched the pilot for that a couple of days ago and wasn't left hugely impressed
Nevermind, Dexter Series 5 on Monday and Darabont's Walking Dead in a couple of weeks!

The pilot is one of the weakest episodes of The Sopranos. Tony doesn't even talk in his accent, and has an American accent. Give the show a chance...
The rest is some of the best tv ever.

I'm starting to get a good Deadwood vibe about this show. Love how things slowed down a bit as well.

Another solid episode.
Surprised to see Gretchen Mol playing Jimmy's (Michael Pitt) mother rather than his mistress.

FUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!!

Just went on IMBD to settle a casting argument, only for there to be a ruddy great spoiler. Highlight if you want to know what it is:

Jimmy might not be long for this world. Michael Pitt is listed as being in only 5 episodes.

Really enjoying it so far though, amazing quality, I forgot during the first episode that I was watching TV and not a big budget film. Sometimes it pays to pay.

Yeah, but Reb, it says the same for Steve Buscemi too.

Which one was she? Trying to remember a scene with his mother.

You don't mean the 'exotic dancer' do you? Cos, that seemed to me to be his sister?

I'm not sure is he says "Mom, put some clothes on." or "C'mon, put some clothes on." He does call her "Ma" when he gives her the gift before telling everyone that she sold the original necklace to keep a roof over his head.

On a completely unrelated topicn- My god the new imdb people pages are ugly.

I thought he just mentioned that their mother had sold it. Definitely got a sister vibe from her.

Trawling the imdb forum (not the most reputable place) I saw a comment saying that Scorses confirmed that she was his mother and she had him when she was 14. Didn't she mention it was the first time she had seen him since he got back from Europe (ie. The War)?

Loving what I have seen so far. Looks like we could have another classic on our hands. Steve Buscemi is already brilliant, which is refreshing seeing as how I never took to his Sopranos character.

Saw the first two episodes; this is scarily good TV. Hope it builds enough substance into the characters and politics because if it does, the writing, directing, editing and set-design are practically perfect.
