I would argue that 3D is putting people OFF going to the cinema given that it costs more and annoys people, particularly there are no regular 2d showings of certain films.I know quite a few people who are waiting for Dredd to be released on disc as they could not find a non 3d showing anywhere nearby.

Two movies this year hit the billion mark without the aid of 3D.

One of those is TDKR but whats the other one? Box office Mojo lists 2 films as making a billion plus - TDKR and The Avengers and that was in 3D (albeit post converted)

Skyfall isn't far off but won't get to a Billion before the year's out

I'm not sure if the International gross gets updated once a week, instead of once a day like the US figures, so it could possibly make $1 billion by Monday, even if it's not updated until then.

The Hunger Games? Or was that in 3D too? I can't even remember.

Both were in IMAX though, which is even more expensive than 3d. Not taking away anything from the achievement at all however.
