here's the box office chart for 3 d to date-

http://boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=3d.htm

over 36 have grossed $100mil+ domestic over last 5-6 years.

plenty of 3 d movies released before 'avatar' raised the game.

An evil alien bong crashes on earth. Its intent: world domination. Our stoner heroes are sent to the alien bong planet and held captive by nude alien beauties. Their only hope to escape and save planet earth: Eebee, the original Evil Bong.

Sounds like a winner

I want to see Kate Winslet's fun pillows in 3D. Does this make me shallow?

Yes it does make you shallow. And as you've given me a good reason to possibly go and see the thing, I thank you for your shallowness.

Hahaha...fun pillows. Is there any other kind??!?!?

I agree with Kermode about 3D and yet...I saw Phantom Menace on Friday. Easily the most pointless 3D. One shot...ONE SHOT had an actual "pop out of the screen" moment. The rest was shamelessly 3D (and all the better for it I guess).

I really do think it's a rather pointless and tacky cash-in, especially with it being the centenery. "Commemorate the great tragedy of Titanic...by watching them drown in glorious 3D!" Just seems a bit wrong.

Agree with every thing you said its just about money while I do like Titanic it really does not need to be seen in 3D.

It was always a pretty tacky film to begin with though, to be fair.

That final shot...

Personally, I think 3-D as a format is not an issue. (Unless it's done really poorly - hello Clash of the Titans!)
The only thing that should be a concern is the quality of the finished movie. For instance, the 3-D effects in the most recent Final Destination were quite well done but the film itself is never going to trouble the Oscars. The Dark Knight was a superb movie and the fact that it wasn't in 3-D made ZERO difference to that. Of course there will always be people who just flat out prefer to watch in 2-D and really, who cares? Let them if that's the choice they want to make!
As an addendum, I recently went to see Star Wars Ep.1 3-D at the IMAX and haven't been as dissapointed in a long time. We already know the film isn't great, but i was at least looking forward to some shit flying out of the screen at me.

Ep.1 sucked in 3-D. At least at the IMAX anyway. Would be curious to see what it was like in an ordinary chain cinema but definitely not wasting anymore of my hard-earned on it

All these movies being re-formatted for 3D is little to do with artistic expression and everything to do with jumping on the bandwagon of a current phase and making more cash out of the same movie.
What an absolute shocker that George Lucas is banging out the Star Wars movies in 3D. Apparently he has been quoted as saying that 3D is the "best way" to watch movies! Presumably he missed out on Clash of the Titans and My Bloody Valentine...
I'm guessing when smell-o-vision comes out he'll reformat The Phantom Menace so we can all smell what a dogshit movie it is.
And now Cameron is having a go with Titanic, and Spielberg with Jurrasic Park.
Much of the detail, colouring, and lighting are badly affected by 3D. So I don't unerstand why these directors who bang on about their "vision", and never wanting to let a movie go unless it is perfect are hapy to sully their creations with method that is obviously far from perfected. I think that making movies to be released 3D is one thing. But all this reformatting stinks. Why not perfect the form before retro fitting previos movies. An good movies at that! You wouldn't retro fit a house with dodgy plumbing. Why do the same with movies?
I can only imagine that some of these top notch cinematographers must be sick with rage seeing their work ruined by dodgy 3D.

Makes business sense as IMAX is about twice the price of 3D so its no wonder the studios are so keen on it.

quote:

IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond says the number of IMAX screens has tripled since 2008 because of audience "demand to see event films in IMAX."

Erm, not really as they're not proper IMAX.

Yup.

Although My Bloody Valentine was shot in 3D, it was still shit 3D.

Absolute bullshit! Why should those of us who have no interest in 3D (certainly in its current state) be punished or affected by the raise of normal ticket prices just to balance out costs. It really seems like Hollywood are forcing the 3D issue down the publics throat. As I have said in a previous post, the method is nowhere near perfect yet. And yet Hollywood and cinema houses are happy to up the costs of overall tickets. This really does stink. Going to the cinema is expensive enough. There would be an irony if all this phony 3D spelled the death knell for cinema. I mean, with the costs of home cinema systems coming down all the time, while at the same time the equipment is improving why bother with the cinema at all? You can have plasma/LCD flatscreen 50inch tv's, Dolby surround sounds, comfort, popcorn and beer, blu ray heaven at home for a good price. And you get no idiots unwrapping sweets, talking, smoking, fighting or whatever to spoil your evening. Many people still attend the cinema for that romantacised element from our youth. But everything is so sanitised and impersonal now that any romance died long ago. I think it would be a good test would be to - if only for a month or two - have cinema and Blu Ray joint releases of major movies. My feeling is that most people would stop at home.
Hell, you can even have 3D at home which is just as good or bad as you get at the cinema!

That's just it though isn't it? The cinema used to be an experience you couldn't replicate in your own home so people went in their droves, but nowadays people feel like its not really worth the extra cost considering the expensive kit they have in their homes, so the industry, having seen the success of various IMAX 3D movies and eventually the huuuge success of Avatar is trying to give us something most of us can't really do at home.

I don't think they're succeding, mind, I avoid 3D as much as possible. The original run of IMAX movies were not very good movies largely, but their use of 3D felt genuinely spectacular, but I am yet to feel anything like that (even with Avatar) in one of the rubbish converted-to-3D cinema chains with phoney IMAX. I don't think it'll last, but i doubt it'll be the death of the cinema either.
