Today I heard Simon Weston talking about an agreement to share any mineral/oil deposits 50/50, which the Argentinians tore up in 2002?

Anyone have any idea if this is true?

Former Spanish, non-indigenous South American colony Argentina again moaning to the UN with the proximity argument over the Malvinas.

I don't know about you lot, but I quite like the look of France...

Looks like the referendum has got them panicked.

Definitely. As soon as it returns a vote to remain British (as it will - the only question is by how great a margin), Argentina's claim is going to mean bugger all to the UN. For the UN to support Argentina after a self-determining vote would be in breach of their own Charter and would require the Falklanders to either be subjugated or made refugees. Never going to happen, which is why the Argentine government are shitting themselves and demanding talks in an effort to legitimise their claim.

It'll also show up the '90 delegates' as opportunists who don't like the UK and actually don't give a shit about the right and wrongs of the Falklands.

Turns out by a rather significant margin - 1517 votes on a 90% turnout. 1513 for, 3 against.

They called the results a parody, well Kirchner did.

I honestly wouldn't get cocky with this vote, all I'm looking about the US position on the Falklands is one that says, even now "Well, we don't really want to take your side and claim you're right. Soz close allies".

Maybe the 3 voted the other way just to see if their votes would be registered.

Usually when some election half-way round the world comes back with 90-odd% voting one way eyebrows are raised. "Democratic election you say... riiiiiiight."

Which it didn't, not even the USA seems to care about it. If the USA doesn't, you have a problem.

I realise it's difficult for you to understand the viewpoint of people who want to stay in the UK () but this result is hardly inconsistent with the stated desires of the Falklanders over what, several decades?

I honestly think he'll be more bothered trying to get her to spend less time banging on about the Falklands and getting botoxed, and more time actually trying to help the poor and destitute in her country.

I doubt that somehow.

What would she gain with his help anyways? More Catholic support? Oh no wait, almost everything South of the Border is Catholic and already agrees with Argentina, so does China, the EU and the US seems quite apathetic...they have a history of conflicting with each other when he was bishop, this is just desperation.

So.... why exactly does his opinion on this matter? I don't see a reason why he should be listened to on any subjects, never mind this one.

Possibly doesn't care and if he did, he and the Church didn't have the influence from stopping gay marriage on his home country (he even clashed with Kirchner on that) when he was bishop*, let alone this.

This is just Argentina trying to get more influence (tbh, for the sake of influence, it's not a dumb idea) more then the rather big amount it already has on the issue.

*though that's a bit wierd, an Argentinian gay rights activist has said that he supported it behind closed doors, but wrong thread for this.
