This is not the greatest film by a long shot but to give it one star is an insult. Its a 2 star film earning an extra star just for the ever so likable Adams and Matthew Goode who between them add just enough fun to a dull script and predictable scenarios. Yes it does not help the Irish tourist board in any way and it is full of Hollywood stereotypes of how they believe the Irish nation to be, but how often does the British film industry fill British films with stereotypical Americans? Give it a shot, it'll not win any awards and not live long in the memory but its enjoyable.

Yeah Empire!

I'm mean it's perfectly fine to stereotype an entire race of people as long as you do it to other nations too......

I love Amy Adams and I wouldve gone to see this despite what I thought of the trailer. No one drives those cars and it is actually pretty easy to get to Dublin from Wales. Ha ha one star.

From the trailer it looks like a pretty accurate depiction of Ireland, to be honest.

Read the reviews, saw the trailer, wasn't banking on much, other than to kill a couple of hours on a cold Monday night. But despite the accents and predictability, I have to say I enjoyed it. Matthew Goode was an unusual but likeable lead, heavy on the sarcasm which appealed and amused. The chemistry, I've seen worse, the scenery, only a tad wobbly at the top of the castle and I'm a sucker for the 'what would you save in a fire'. Would watch again for a bit of 'feelgoodness' and lets face it, we all like a bit of predictability now and then...

Every year on February 29th hundreds of Irish men pop the question. My own father got real old school with it and asked a leprechaun to tip his hat to my mom as they passed and the ring was underneath.
Fucking Americans.

Another lazy example of racist stereotypes from the American film studios. Nearly as bad as Tommy Lee Jones in Blown Away making bombs while doing a riverdance to U2 while drinking Guinness.

It's troubling to think how this film would function without the acting chomps of Amy Adams & Matthew Goode – who despite the sheer awfulness of the piece, manage to spark up a decent chemistry between each other and make this film far better than it deserves. A film so cringe-worthy it's as if the film-makers of Leap Year have collected their Irish residential research by watching repeats of Father Ted. But rather than emulate the hysterical comedy classic, this film is about as funny as cancer, bloody Sunday and the potato famine rolled into one. Unless you're a fan ofAmy Adams, avoid this like the plague!

2/5 (but only just!)

I thought it was a documentary. It really reminded me of when my plane crashed in Ireland. I saw the Irish in their natural habitat, and it wasn't pretty.  I'd seen them huddling in stations before, being loud but… this time I was surrounded. Everywhere I went it felt like they were watching me; fish-white flesh puckered by the Irish breeze; tight eyes peering out for fresh meat; screechy, booze-soaked voices hollering out for a taxi to take 'em halfway up the road to the next all-night watering hole. A shatter of glass; a round of applause; a sixteen-year-old mother of three vomiting in an open sewer, bairns looking on, chewing on potato cakes. I ain't never going back… not never.

Or was that Scotland?

When I first moved to Ireland, nobody did this. It was actually quite eerie not hearing cheers immediately following a smash, as is the way in Newcastle upon Toon. You occasionally hear it now though, they have learned.

No it's the United Kingdom. Binge-drinking and teenage pregnancies. Not to forget loutish behaviour.

Back on topic. Amy Adams is stunning.

Guilty pleasure of mine,i can't believe there's even athread on this!
The "racism" or whatever is just what some films do.Take it with a pinch of salt.It is really just bad film making.
As for the film itself, completely full of air,but has a certain appeal to me which even i don't understand!
Good to pass a rainy afternoon, two good leads with a hint of chemistry,so it's ok.

At the risk of seeming to harbour a fetish I'd love to meet a lovely redheaded lass in the same vein as her. It's not simply her physical beauty but her personality, the mannerisms, the smile, her energy and spirit. It just accentuates her physical beauty. I hear that she does well with the rather spartan material in the film?

Does any woman actually follow that tradition of proposing to a man on the 29th of February during a leap year?

What do you make of Romola Garai?

I actually thought she was Irish! Turns out she grew-up in Wiltshire. Going back to "Leap Year", I know there's a bit where Amy Adams' characer is diverted to Cardiff. Does it show anything in Cardiff or does it quickly move on to Dublin?

Is that a euphemism for a cold 'screen wipe'? You know, "we're landing in bogorra" and then the next scene the heroine is deposited where she ought to be.

There is no spoon...no wait:

YouTube

Check the 40 seconds mark.

"We're diverting to Cardiff, Wales"

"Wales?!"

Haha.

I know love but there's more here than wooden love spoons, male voice choirs and green valleys.

You should at least give me a précis! I love her 'orgasm' face in the trailer (0:15 mark).
